‘Dark Knight Rises’ On Wall Street; Batwing Soars & A Mystery Device

1 year ago by

The Dark Knight Rises has filmed in more locations than the previous Nolan Batman films combined – and currently they’re filming in New York City on Wall Street (though they’re not filming Occupy Wall Street, in case you were wondering).

Today, we have images and a description of yesterday’s shoot, including photos of the Batwing hovering over a mystery device which we will describe in more detail below for those who are trying to avoid spoilers.

Below is a bulleted description of the shoot, paraphrased from a post by Raganork8 (who happened to be at the shoot) at the Super Hero Hype forums (The following descriptions could be considered spoilers):

.

.

.

.

.

  • Bane mercenaries go into the Stock Exchange Building and take Stock Exchange employees hostage before
  • Bane mercenaries on motorcycles – with hostages on their backs – come barreling down the Stock Exchange steps and into an alley
  • Matthew Modine is standing by the entire time and looks shocked as the mercenaries drive past; Modine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and a host of cops start shooting at the mercenaries; Modine is seemingly in charge of the police force
  • Christian Bale – and thus Batman and Bruce Wayne – was not present at Wall Street
  • Later, they filmed the “Batwing” hovering above Bane’s mystery doomsday machine (possibly related to earthquakes), which at some point begins to light up
  • The Batwing/”earthquake” machine scene was shot with the Imax camera and seemed likely to utilize CGI

Now check out the photos below:

It’s been said that the so-called “earthquake” machine is not, in fact, an earthquake machine at all. If true, does this mean it’s an explosive device? Is Bane going around exploding all of Gotham as a means to, uhm, control all of Gotham? I think we can agree that that doesn’t make very much sense.

The device certainly doesn’t look like your typical bomb – it has more of a science-fiction feel, a la the water evaporator from Batman Begins. So, if it doesn’t create earthquakes, maybe it does something equally ridiculous instead?

Despite the slight backlash The Dark Knight Rises received as a result of some of the early set images and videos, it’s become more and more clear with every batch of images that this film is going to be insane. Mercenaries riding bikes? Kidnapping stock brokers? Gunfights between the police and the mercenaries? Batman’s Batwing versus Bane’s mysterious doomsday (and maybe “earthquake-creating”) device? And that’s just in this particular batch!

What do you guys think of the above images? Are you starting to feel more confident in the quality of the third and final Christopher Nolan Batman film?

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th, 2012.

  1. Shweet!!!

  2. THAT batplane looks like something from HALO… pretty sweet, and nice product placement BTW

    • Looks like the aircraft Cameron uses in Aliens/Avatar.

    • If you’re talking about the MW3 sign, it won’t be in the movie. It’s just in the background of the street.

  3. Is any of this film set at night? I know that they will darken it up, but all the scenes are in the daylight so far. Batman looks kinda silly during the day.

    • your right it better be at night

      • Most shots are filmed in the day time and changed in post.. it’s cheaper and easier.

        • Totally not true. How do I know this? Because I watched them film more than a few scenes of the last movie. They shut down downtown Chicago streets from about midnight until around 4 am.

I really don’t know how you can get the same effect from actually shooting at night over adding effects in post.It just doesn’t look convincing.See the movie 30 Days Of Night as an example. You can totally tell the scenes that are filtered to look like night shoots.

          • Actually exactly what @Travis said is true.

The rooftop scene in TDK with Gordon, Harvey and Batman was filmed during the day.

  4. “Day-man…. fighter of the night-man”

    • CHAMPION OF THE SUN! aaaaaawwwwwwWW

      • You’re a master of karate….and friendship…..for everyone!

        • lol awesome sunny reference to my favorite episode… now on s more Batman related note, I guess I’m the only one that doesn;t particularly like the batwing

  5. I’m guessing that isn’t really Christian Bale in the cockpit of the batwing?

    • Yeah, I think that’s a Bat-doll.

      • LOL

  6. That looks awesome.
I’m in for every movie of Nolan

  7. When I look at the Batwing, I think of the Hunter-Killers from T2, which is a good thing. Even though I like the first Batman movies Batwing better, I’m liking what I’m seeing here. Summer 2012 can’t get here soon enough. Geek heaven!

    • @ John “Kahless”

When i see the Batwing, i also think of the Hunter-Killers from the Terminator films or another aircraft from Cameron’s other films. I still like the one in Burton’s film better. But then again, even though it was in Batman:TAS i liked the Batwing on that show even more as imo it was sleeker. If that’s a good way to describe it.

Im not more confident about the film after reading all this or the teaser trailer, etc. I hope its better than TDK & brings the trilogy full circle as Nolan mentioned.

  8. The continious almost weekly coverage of Dark Knight Rises and Man Of Steel is getting to a ridiculous level. We’ll practically know both movies scene for scene, right up to the end in the next couple of months.

  9. dear screenrant
i opened this page only to post this comment
i even didn’t look at the pictures you know why? well im not sure if you do
    you don’t.
you cant even imagine that there might be some people who are HARDCORE fans of “not knowing anything about a movie and then go watch it”
i in the geekiest way kept myself from watching any image or video of TDKR and only the one with catwoman and bane because i wanted the full joy of getting surprises when TDKR comes out
when TDK came to cinemas i didn’t knew anything about it i even didnt heard of it till i found out its breaking records and that was one of the reasons i enjoyed it so much cause i didn’t saw any footage of it

and now you (screenrant) not only spoil things (well that’s alright because i don’t bother opening those pages) but NOW YOU PUT A Spoiled IMAGE OF THIS MOVIE ON YOUR HOME PAGE …………..

I HATE YOU I HATE YOU LITERALLY UNDERSTAND? LATERALLY HATE YOU

    • This will not end well

      • The ban-hammer is powering up but I think Vic may cut him some slack.

    • I think he’s upset.

It was the all CAPS that gave it away.

      • I don’t know, I think he may be on the fence. :-D

    • Dear pj,

      1. No one forced you to click on any link on this site.

      2. Pictures of the Batwing have been online for a couple of months now.

      3. If you are a hardcore fan of ““not knowing anything about a movie and then go watch it” then why in God’s name are you reading movie news websites?

      4. If you “laterally” hate us because of this, then you have either maturity or mental health issues.

      5. Finally, just give me the word and I can fix it so you can’t even SEE the site at all, even if you want to in the future (since you also seem to suffer from extreme self-control issues).

      Have a nice day,

      Vic

      • 5. Finally, just give me the word and I can fix it so you can’t even SEE the site at all, even if you want to in the future (since you also seem to suffer from extreme self-control issues)

That ban-hammer seems to be going into overdrive! By Odin’s beard….TAKE COVER!! :-P

      • wow i wasn’t that serious vic
you have a good website and i only come here to watch trailers and i mostly read headlines , mostly.
or i just look at how many stars you guys gave to a movie just stars

and i know that batwing pics is on the net for 2 months but i didnt expect to see it on top of your homepage! that was the disapointing part

and that “laterally” part was just for a little dramatic atmosphere guess it was a little too much

        • pj,

Sorry, don’t try to backpedal. Go read your comment(s) again and tell me there is any way to take them other than you being seriously pissed off. If you’re fine now, that’s fine – but your initial comments weren’t “kidding.”

          Vic

    • Go live in the mountains and hunt for food for the next few months. That’s the only way to guarantee you won’t know anything. But from the sounds of it, the mountains would be a pretty far journey from your parent’s basement. (ZING!)

      • oh ouch

    • LATERALLY HATE YOU ???

      as opposed to… dorsally?

sorry – I don’t usually poke fun at typos but since it was in all caps I think it’s justified

  10. COME ON !!! I MEAN DID YOU HAVE TO PUT THE ONE WITH BATWING
SERIOUSLY WHY? WHY ON EARTH THE BATWING >:(

  11. Thankx alot Screenrant,i’ve been sucessful with the new news part but i’ve been trying to avoid all contact of this supposed Batwing and there u go putting it up in the news stream. Ur still a great website but DANG…..

    • THECOOL,

Really, I didn’t think that at this point a pic of the Batwing would be a spoiler. But I went ahead and changed the image on the home page just to be nice.

      Vic

      • See u guys are still #1 in my book, any other website would of let it be. Thank You

      • thanks i really really appreciate it

      • Dont see the big issue with the picture of the Batwing on the home page i think its been on there before. Why does that thing look like the Batwing took a poop?

  12. Hmmmm, let’s see; the title says, “‘Dark Knight Rises’ On Wall Street: Batwing Soars & A Mystery Device”; did some of you not think that maybe the Batwing is shown in this article, just from the title alone?

  13. The site does a good job of balancing the tease to draw you in and actual information, with a nice big juicy warning beforehand if they’re going to drop some potential “spoilers”.

You’d have to “laterally” not be paying attention to trip over the big warnings.

    • that was a misspelling and Firefox is responsible
have you understand my comment? no. the image was ; WAS on top of the homepage not in this article

      • Yes, OK. Let’s let bygones be bygones and move on.

        It’s all good. :)

        Vic

    • I agree. Screenrant is a very well-done site. It keeps getting better and better, I’ve received most of my movie news over the past few months from their kick-ass Facebook page.

      • Thanks very much, KGB! :-D

        Vic

        • Hey Vic,

You guys are a doing a great job and I love visiting the site! It has been my go-to spot for movie reviews and trailers since I discovered it a few months ago…..And for the record I enjoyed the photos you posted for TDKR, and the constant updates provided as to what is happening on set. As a true movie buff I get a ton of value from this site.

          Keep up the good work!

  14. I’m surprised no one had complained about the movie in the comments lol. That being said, I’m still in. I wonder how the story is structured for this one, since there is so much is going on…

    • They complain practically every time there’s a post like this. You’d think it would become clear that Dark Knight Rises related imagery can be found in Dark Knight Rises related image galleries.

    • its a Nolan movie it doesnt need any

      • it doesn’t need any structure?

        • complain

      • I only bring it up, because the first movie has a classic three act structure, but the second movie has this twisted, awesome five act structure. The third movie will probably be a three act structure; I was just bringing it up for discussion.

        • @BlueHeroBH

Think will be a traditional 3 act story because this one IMO is much more a Batman story.

TDK was a story of three men crusade against crime and how each was affected. In retrospect, TDK felt comparable a greek tragedy.

        • The Dark Knight is good for catching up on sleeping to me enjoyed Captain America alot more and im a DC fan!

          • I’ve seen CA about 6 times; TDK, only once.

            • @Kahless

Thats funny lol I have watched BB & TDK countless times and Cap only once (in theatres). And hated it lol.

My neighbor bought Cap yesterday so im finna watch it over her house tonight. I’ll try to be unbias but I can’t make any promises lol

            • @ John “Kahless”

Wow. I seen CA 4 times which is my limit for any movie;TDK, 3 times in theaters. Im pretty sure by now Ive watched CA more on dvd than i have TDK. I even watched Batman Begins more on dvd than TDK.

  15. After seeing what Bane looks like and having Catwoman in the film I can feel comfortable saying that this film …will….suck

    • Then, don’t watch or worry about it. Problem solved.

  16. to pj and thecool: what are you going to do when you go to a theater sometime before summer 2012 to go watch the newest miley cyrus flick, and there is a new theatrical trailer for TDKR, and in this uber-cool trailer, they show off the batwing, in action no less? are you going to throw a hissy fit and throw your jujubes at the screen, then go run to the projection room and demand they take the now spoiled image out of your head? you can’t un-ring a bell. if you want to stay comple3tely in the dark about ANY movie, then i suggest you cancel your interweb service immediately…did you really expect to never see any pics of the new vehicles before the release of the film…really…REALLY! you are kidding yourself. As stated previously, if you want to be spoiler free, then stay away from movie NEWS sites

    • He´s just a troll. And I say he, because I´m pretty sure that ‘pj’ and ‘the cool’ are one and the same person.

  17. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is truly gonna b n epic ending 2 d entire Nolan series.. i hope it comes in 3D to add more vividness to the epic ending…

    • Yeah, good luck with the 3d thing. Both Nolan and his cinematographer, Wally Pfister, have been quoted as saying they were never going to film it in that format or even release it in said format.

  18. Vic 1 Pj 0

  19. Sweet this looks awesome

  20. Looks cool, but then again it’s Nolan. His movies always LOOK cool. Hopefully the tumbler turns into the bat-wing, but probably not. I love vehicles that transform, but only in movies that are not dumb.

  21. Sorry that i’m gonna be the first one to complain about the movie but here goes ;) :
I really dislike the “Batwing” (it looks nothing like the Batwing :( ). Isn’t it kinda supposed to look like a bat? – it doesn’t IMO
IMO it looks like something out of Transformers: a tank + a jet + a scorpion + a turtle = the new “Batwing” ;)

I’m also still on the fence about Catwoman and Bane (I love the fact that Catwoman is in the movie, but why did they gotsta make it Hathaway? :( )
P.S. Bane is too skinny ;)

Also, why does it seem that everything is being filmed in daylight? It is a Batman movie right?

Oh well… TDKR is still my second most anticipated movie for 2012 (guess which is my most anticipated ;) )…
TDKR’s plot still seems solid (so far), it looks action packed, Catwoman’s gonna be in it ;) , the dialogue will most likely be great, and come on! It’s a Batman movie! Batman is awesome! I.e. I’m sure this movie is going to rock! :D

    • i dont know about the batwing , it looks like a bat in a way
but about bane being skinny its because Nolan wants things a bit realistic you know i think if the bat wing had a bat-shape in technicality it wouldn’t be able to fly thats the kind of stuff Nolan does think about the most when it comes to making a more believable movie visually

    • OHHH you fan boys are something else…
its nolan world, everything is suppose to be as realistic as possible, look at the tank from batman begins, it dosen’t look like a batmobile but it more realistic. also dont judge from the photos, bane could be a little CGI in the final cut and they can darken up to make it look like its night.

      • So your saying Batman having a tank is more realistic than a fast car? (It’s a freakin tank dude! ;) ).
        – But to be honest, I’m not that upset about the tank/Tumbler (at least they called it a “Tumbler” instead of the Batmobile – that way, I can accept that it’s something else) — but what bugs me is that they’re calling this new tank-jet-turtle-thing the batwing :(

Also, I see your point that Nolan is trying to make everything as realistic as he can, but (from the photos) Bane just looks WAY too skinny (I know they can do some CGI effects, but still, I doubt it would help much) — Heck, I have an uncle that’s more ripped than the new Bane ;) — most of the guys at my gym is in better shape than skinny-Bane.
But yeah, like you said, the photos can be misleading… so that said, I’ll stop pestering Nolan’s Bane until I see him on the silver-screen.

But these are minor issues… I’m sure TDKR will still be an awesome movie. I’ll definitely be there on opening night. :D

        • The Tumbler is more realistic than a high speed car in an urban enviornment. The tumbler is running over over cars and a battery ram. A low sittin high speed car wouldn’t have a chance unless it was on the highway. This Batman isnt scared to cause a lil damage and I like that. The mission is higher than concern for property damage.

Personally, I have never been a fan of the bat-theme gadgetry & vehicles. In the comics, animation, and video games I’ll bite but it looks even more corny in live-action. Im more than happy with the design. It looks like a jet propelled hellicopter — which makes sense in an urban enviornment for better manuervability. The only real question is how or when did bruce learn such piloting skills. And are we sure that it is called the Batwing ? My sguess is still on the BatGyro from the earliest conics. And they could add wings in post-production.

Only issue I have is that Batman (especially after BB) does not allow his cape to drape over thr front of his body. I can honestly say it urks. Just one of those inages/poses I like on Batman.

          • PS the real life operating specs for the Tumbler are awesome. 0-60 in 5 seconds, over 500 horsepower. Cant remember top speed. I would definately have one if it was street legal.

            • And what if it’s not street legal? What cop would try to stop that? :-D

              • You are wise beyond years. All babies born on this day or a controversial holiday in March should be forever named in your honor.

                • Your heart is truly Klingon! I shall slay a thousand Romulans in your honor!! :-P

                  • are u insane yo? bane, skinny? go watch tom hardy in warrior, and tdkr teaser and tell me bane is skinny :/

                    • I never said Bane was skinny.

          • I think you’re confusing PRACTICALITY with REALISM dude.
I agree that it’s practical for Batman to be able to do the things he can do with the Tumbler, but does that make it realistic?
No, because a tank in an urban environment can never be realistic (it would be cool though ;) )
So…if you can give me one good reason to why it’s REALISTIC (not practical) then I’ll believe you.

Also, sorry about the “Batwing” thing: I thought they already announced that the official name for it was the “Batwing” — obviously I was wrong — BUT, if it does turn out that the official name will be the Batwing, then I’m gonna PO’ed all over again.

Concerning the cape: it doesn’t drape over his shoulders because that wouldn’t be “realistic” ;) — it would mean Bats having a longer cape, and if it’s longer, it would only get in the way when he’s beating up bad guys.

            • @TheAvenger
No disrespect pimp but you are misusing both terms or you meant to say something else. In this situation practicle means usefulness while realistic means possible. I discussed the PRACTICALITY of the Tumbler and it is very much POSSIBLE to have a real working version because there is a real working version. There are stunt versions, yes, but there is a Tumbler that can do most of the things on screen and at high speeds. The real life specs for the Tumbler are awesome and thanks to @John “Kahless” wisdom I will soon own one.

For example the Microwave Emitter. It has real life practicle applications to destroy an enemies water supply. At the same time it is not realistic because (to my knowledge) it can’t be done.

As for the cape maybe I should have better explained myself. Since TDK he has left his cape in the superman position. The cape doesnt need to be longer. In BB he woukd have the cape cover the front of his body when he “appeared” near s frriendly. In TDK I would have liked to see that look at the fake Harvey and Dent murder scene and at the Gordon hostage situation. A) I think he looks cooler and B) you cant tell if he is reaching for something off his built.

This is one of my favorite sceenes from BB just because of the pose:

              http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&source=mog&hl=en&gl=us&client=safari&q=batman%20begins%20cape&sa=N&biw=320&bih=356#i=5

This is a fan made and thry exaggeratted the cape some:

              http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&source=mog&hl=en&gl=us&client=safari&q=batman%20begins%20cape&sa=N&biw=320&bih=356#i=12

              • EDIT

I discussed the *USEFULLNESS* of the Tumbler and it is very much POSSIBLE to have a real working version because there is a real working version.

At the same time it is not realistic because to my knowledge) a microwave emitter cannot be *created*.

PS The Tumbler is not a tank. Tanks operate on treads.

        • By the way TheAvenger i take it back Captain America was the best Comic Movie this year to me not Green Lantern.

    • @ TheAvenger

At this point im curious what it will actually be called in the film if refered by name. I doubt it’s gonna be called Batwing. I can’t wait to see how Bane got his own Tumbler & Catwoman her own her Bat-pod, unless the Tumbler gets destroyed again & she steals it later in the film.

I actually never wanted Catwoman in the film from the start. Id only want Talia as a female villain. Then again they could of gone with maybe Lady Shiva since she hasn’t been used yet instead of Catwoman. I too not fond of Hathaway in the role as Catwoman. As for Bane, im skepetical because he’s my 2nd favorite villain & Schumacher messed him up in Batman & Robin. I have little more confidance Nolan will do the character justice, but how much is what’s on my mind.

TDKR is slightly my second most anticipated movie for 2012 aswell. I hope TDKR ends the trilogy with a bang.

I know it’s a ways away. But as goes for the next Batman Reboot, i hope they can find a balance between Burton’s films & Nolan’s films. What i mean is for example Batman:TAS would be a good influence for the next reboot imo. As id like to see Robin back in the franchise again, maybe Batgirl, Maybe! among other new villains not yet seen on film or can be done properly like Mr.Freeze, Penguin, etc.

      • It would be dope if Bane spoke with a latino accent. The “Bane Matalo” chant gives me much hope.

    • And the award for the comment with the most smiley emoticons goes to:

      (drum-roll)

      TheAvenger!

      Just kidding.

    • @ TheAvenger – I imagine that the plane will never be referred to as the “batwing” in the actual movie as the tumbler is not called the Batmobile. It is most likely another Lucius Fox design from Wayne Industries. I also feel that most of the scenes will be made to look like night BUT if Bane is taking over Gotham he will not just do it at night. Batman will have to make his presence known in the light. But I am with you on this movie is going to rock!

      @pj – …dude… come on!

This movie is going to be awesome. Next year is the year for comic book movies to totally dominate the box office! I see TDKR breaking all kinds of records and The Avengers will be right on its tail!

      • I see TDKR breaking all kinds of records and The Avengers will be right on its tail

I hope not. I want both to make exactly the same, so the fanboys, uh, fan-persons, won’t go all ape**** when one makes more money than the other. This won’t happen, I just wish it would.

        • @ John “Kahless”

I agree with ya. It would be nice if it would happen but wouldn’t surprise me if a few of those people would perhaps maybe rub it in.

    • I like Hathaway in Love & Other Drugs. Isnt Bane suppose to be Mexican, and i hate to say it but between this and MOS im looking forward to the Avengers.

  22. The mystery device? Come on people isnt it obvious.

Its the bomb that caused Dick to lose his parents.

    • I thought it was a booger from the Batwing. :-D

  23. hahahahahaha My comment was flagged for using the short name of Richard. Sorry Vic wasn’t thinking there. :D

  24. troll

  25. I too dont think Anne H. is the right woman for the Catwoman role..she’s just not mean and savy enough..she’s just too nice and that smile of hers that im so sick of..I hate her being cast as Catwoman its just the wrong decision!

    • I agree. Although there are many versions of Catwoman so Hathaway may work for this version. I saw the spy pics with her and Bruce talking as friends, which leads me to believe she may be truer to the her original socialite by day, criminal by night motive.

Personally I like her Frank Miller incarnation as a black/italian former prostitute (or stripper) and illegitimate daughter of Carmine Falcone.

Nolan does seem to have a dull eye when it cones to actress choices. Out of all his movies Collitard is his best looking choice yet. From Hathaway, Carrie-Ann Moss, to Hilary Swank. I guess he doesnt even have a couch in the casting room like Michael Bay or Robert Rodriguez. Just hard wooden hand made english chairs.

  26. As with all things Nolan, I will be very interested to see how all of this coalesces. Definitely getting excited for this movie, and I have no worries that IF that mystery device is an earthquake machine, it will be handled as expertly as the water evaporator in the first film – which was definitely a stretch for a MacGuffin, but not quite as large of a one as a certain crystal skull.

  27. I know this site is made especially for people wanting to “rant” but goodness, a lot of you guys complain worse than children do. I mean really complaining and whining about so much that we don’t fully know yet. I see that as a problem with people these days anyway. They love to complain and point the finger at any and everyone without holding themselves accountable. If you don’t like what you see on the site…don’t look. No one has put a gun to your head to force you to look at all the pics posted, right? So what are most of you crying about? I sickens me to know we have a society filled with people like this. You don’t like this, you don’t like that. Sorry but if you’re so displeased with choices made by the director then make your own movie…ooops…Can’t do that can you? Well stop moaning and “YOU” have the power to click or not to click if you don’t want to see certain information…to Kofi…sorry man. You’re site is awesome and I enjoy it to death but I guess whining from people with no talent, skills, or funds to create their own movie comes with the job. Keep it up Kofi, you’re doing great!!!

  28. By looking at all the pics back in May, I know this film is gonna Rock …Can`t wait !

  29. I think the “Batwing ” is going to end up being some sort of helicopter. Look at how its designed.

    • The Harrier is not a helicopter but it hovers.
