[Check More Evidence that TDKR will be based on 'Knightfall']
As with any of Chris Nolan’s Batman movies, the rumors surrounding The Dark Knight Rises have already been so thick that we had to create a TDKR fact sheet to help separate the truths from the speculation.
Today brings one big whopping RUMOR our way – one that many fans have been speculating about ever since it was confirmed that Tom Hardy would be playing Bane in Batman 3.
While this latest RUMOR – which concerns the outcome of Bane and Batman’s rivalry in the film – should be taken with a huge (and we do mean HUGE ) grain of salt, you should still be warned that it could be a HUGE POTENTIAL DARK KNIGHT RISES SPOILER!!!

The latest rumor (which comes to us exclusively by way of Comic Book Movie) is that The Dark Knight Rises will be following in the footsteps of the one of the most famous Batman storylines of all time, “Knightfall,” which any real fan should recognize. For those unfamiliar:
“Knightfall” involves Bane coming to Gotham City on quest to beat Batman and take control of the city’s crime syndicates. To accomplish this, Bane blows up Arkham Asylum, flooding Gotham’s streets with all the lunatics that Batman has locked up. Batman tries to recover the fugitives, and in the process wears himself down both mentally and physically. When he’s at his lowest ebb, Batman is confronted by Bane inside of Wayne Manor and an epic fight ensues, ending with Bane breaking Batman’s back. The incident leaves Gotham without a protector, until Bruce Wayne recovers from his injuries and takes the city back (albeit from a new Batman, though no word on if TDKR will go that route).
According to this rumor, Bane and Batman will at least play out the epic “Knightfall” battle in their first encounter. Says Comic Book Movie‘s “reliable source”:
Bruce Wayne/Batman & Bane will certainly clash hard in The Dark Knight Rises and I can tell you this much, during their first fight against one-another will , Bane WILL break Batman’s back!
As stated, many fans have been speculating about and/or hoping for this “Knightfall” scenario ever since Bane was announced for TDKR. While it holds obvious appeal for fanboys hoping to see their beloved source material realized on the big screen, there is the obvious risk of having a Batman movie where Batman is out of commission for a significant portion of the film, until he inevitably “rises” to the challenge of overcoming his injuries and stopping Bane.

Sure, having “Batman” off the board would allow star Christian Bale a fresh opportunity to do a deeper exploration of the character of Bruce Wayne, without the costume and cape getting in the way (which, admittedly, I could see being an approach that would appeal to Nolan). But again, would fans respond well to a superhero movie like that? And wouldn’t watching Bruce Wayne climb his way back into the mantle of Batman be a little too reminiscent of Batman Begins?
There’s also the possibility that all those secondary characters like Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard), or John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) were purposefully meant to “over crowd” the film, in order to give viewers more characters to follow while Bruce Wayne is injured. Catwoman’s presence in this scenario is especially interesting, since the character has just as often been portrayed as an anti-hero as she has a villain. Could she step up to defend Gotham while Batman can’t? (“Holy future spinoff, Batman!”)
Then there are those Lazarus Pits rumors, which would take on new possibilities if Bruce Wayne needs a means to fix his broken body…
We could go on and on speculating, but let’s not jump the gun. This is still a HUGE RUMOR that has not been confirmed, and likely won’t be until Nolan wants us to know.
…But that doesn’t stop us from discussing: Do you hope Nolan incorporates the events of “Knightfall” into his film? Would you be happy with a Batman movie that had Batman on bed-rest for a sizeable portion of its runtime?
The Dark Knight Rises will be in theaters on July 20, 2012 – though this “Knightfall” rumor may be revealed if we get a teaser trailer with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 next month. We’ll see.

I doubt TDKR will have Batman “out of commission” for a good part of the film. Maybe for a short period bridging the 2nd and 3rd acts. This would of course mean that his injuries would be much less than a broken back.
Many aspects the Knightfall scenario does make sense so long as the rumors that Bane is a member of LoS are true. It would just change Bane’s motivation for releasing inmates onto Gotham’s streets to further the LoS’s desire to see the city destroy itself rather than Bane’s personal motivations.
Bruce Wayne (Batman) suffers burnout and is systematically assaulted and crippled by a “super steroid”-enhanced genius named Bane. Wayne is replaced as Batman by an apprentice named Jean-Paul Valley, who becomes increasingly violent and unstable, tarnishing Batman’s reputation. Eventually, Wayne is healed through “paranormal means”, and reclaims his role as Batman…. Lazarus pit anyone??
Too be honest that sounds like the perfect story for a movie titled the dark kngiht rises. I would enjoying seeing something like knightfall to come to the big screen. The casting list of this movie is filled with big time actors and I would love to see Batman really get his ass kicked. I don’t believe the movie would lack any action because Batman will have to retrieve a handful of villains which have escaped meanwhile dealing with Bane. While Batman is injured Gotham would become a zoo begging for the Dark Knight to return. I personally believe that Catwoman being a villain while Gotham is frantic would play out much better. She can rob all the jewels and diamonds she wants while Batman is down. That would allows Joshep-Gordon’s character to get a good amount of screen time while figuring out Gotham’s sticky situation. This would be the ultimate plot!
This all sounds rather messy. You’ve got Batman running from the police and the problem of how to get his named cleared. You’ve multiple criminals plus at least one or maybe two super criminals to deal with and now this idea that you can throw in an injured and convalescing hero into the mix. Seems like the situation at the end of the last movie might get jettisoned for a more action oriented theme. We wouldn’t want the dark knight to get too cerebral would we?
But then what if a Batman replacement actually takes over permanently? Could this be Nolan’s way of departing from his own limitations on his interpretation of the franchise? I’m intrigued by the idea of the audience not knowing who’s really behind the mask. It would make for an interesting dynamic to segue into a Justice League movie.
No I disagree they can just make arkham full of terrible criminals witout really introducing major villains. The concept of Arkham hasn’t really been introduced or touched upon in Nolan’s flims so it would make more sense if maybe they degrade the severity of criminals at Arkham. Personlly I totally disagree with how DC is handling Justice with all this reboot BS. Marvel and Paramount have got it right on how to assemble a team of super heroes. Plus, Batman has no replacement expcept for Terry McGinnis at which point he is like 70. So your point about a replacement really doesn’t make sense. But I’m rooting for DC but this Knightfall idea could seriously make a wicked movie deifnently his toughest task.
The matter is not about Batman’s replacement. In “Knightfall” story arc, there’s Jean-Paul something, I really can’t remember. And, after defeating bane, he must to face Azrael for the mantle of Batman. Terry McGinnis is a character exclusive to the WB DC Animated Universe.
A suitable replace is Dick Grayson (Nightwing)…
Maybe this?
Batman meets catwoman and starts a romance while both are outlaws.
Marion Cotiards character is probably Talia Al Ghul. Another romance
Bane takes over the crime world while Batman is on the run.
Batman returns to stop Bane, Bane breaks him.
Talia heals Batman in a lazarus pit.
Love triangle continues, Batman fights Bane to return as the city’s protecter.
Maybe, I but I strongly dislike love triangles. (See Spider-Man 3)
@ ROTERGO
I kinda hate love triangles. I would only approve of them if they worked really great within the film. But i find it complex, not a easy thing to do.
The Dark Knight had a love triangle (Bruce-Rachel-Harvey) and that played out fine. Nolan should be capable of incorporating it into the story without screwing anything up.
That’s a very good point Jimmy, as I can’t believe that I forgot about that. However, it’ll be interesting to see what happens, as i have a feeling that Marion Cotillard’s character is going to turn out to be secretly Ras Al Ghul’s daughter in the movie. Don’t ask me why, but it’s just a weird hunch that i have.
I personally don’t like love triangles either; particularly in superhero films, as most of them are often derivative afterthoughts that really serve no purpose other than a petty attempt to create personal conflict between the characters. Having said all that, I do think a love triangle can work as long as enough character development is given to each character involved to make the audience care about them. This is where most superhero movies mess up a love triangle situation. They’ll often build up enough sympathy for two of the characters involved; while making the third character come off as one dimensional and stale.
I think a love triangle could work, in theory, for “Dark Knight Rises”, but proper character development will be needed for all parties involved. If not, then it’s just going to come off half ass like we saw in the first 3 x-men films and spider-man 3 that you mentioned…
I’m telling you, a Catwoman movie is very possible!!!!
As long as it’s not like the Halle Berry movie, that sounds like a good idea to me.
@ The Catwoman Riddler
Are you talkin Nolan’s Catwoman solo film or somthing else? I probly won’t see it anyways cause i didn’t see Halle Berry’s film cause i knew that would be a embarrassment & waste of time. I like the character but having a solo film meh, good luck on it is all i gotta say.
If Knightfall is what Nolan is going for in this film, with the cast they have and using the previous two films as an example, I am confident this movie will be the best superhero movie of all time.
In the article it’s mentioned that people may not like having a Batman movie where he isn’t Batman throughout most of the film, but Thor was exactly like that. Hemsworth was only Thor in the beginning and end of the film. The entire middle parts of the movie was him dealing with his humanity.
They could have Batman fall to Bane, leaving no one but Gordon and the GCPD standing in his way. Bruce Wayne’s story could be a story of him working his way back to being the Dark Knight that Gotham needs to defeat Bane and save the entire city from whatever mess Bane creates (probably a city over-run by criminals, just like in the comic.) Then in the ending of the film, Batman publicly defeats Bane. Making him a hero in the eyes of the people and finally taking Gotham from being the symbol of crime and corruption and making it a city that finally has something that gives them hope. That would be the film I want to see.
But right now it’s just a rumor, and I’m anxious to see where Nolan is going to go story wise with Bane and wrapping up a stellar Batman film series.
Or, since we’ve seen set pics of a lazarus pit (alleged lazarus pit, it’s still just a rumor.)
Bruce Wayne could risk insanity by entering a lazarus pit to mend his broken back so he can return to Gotham to combat Bane and save Gotham.
Still just speculation, but at this point with nothing solid given to us by Nolan, speculation and assumptions are all we have.
I totally agree with you I said almost the exact same thing. I personally think it would be the best Batman as well simply because of how big the task at hand will be. Also they can fit in catwoman when batman is hurt where she basically steals a bunch of jewels and artifacts.
You bring up an excellent point there. Plus, if you watched “Batman Begins”, Bruce Wayne was only batman for like a little over forty minutes of the movie; which is shocking as the film is two and a half hours long. However, the story is so captivating and character driven that you can’t help but want to root for the character anyway.
It sounds really good, however, Christopher Nolan announced this film will be the last one in the series so I struggle to understand why would he want to end it with Batman’s having his back broken? If he follows Batman: Knightfall storyline, he surely must come back with an aftermath of some sort… Otherwise the fans will be left completely unsatisfied.

So, what about having Superman show up and fight Bane?
Superman does not exist in this version of Batman.
I think the emotional theme conversation is the most interesting at this point. I agree BB was Fear. TDK was Chaos. But I’m not sure this one will be Rage. Rage has the potential to be blind or shallow. Nolan has never copped out to either. Bane, while capable of rage, is also very smart. I think that his wits outweigh his physicality as his strongest weapon. The emotional themes of the first two dealt directly with Bruce/Batman. Rage is not something he has to grapple with inside himself like fear and chaos; he has used rage as a tool, one that aids him in conquering Fear or Chaos. I also have a feeling that Bane is not the primary antagonist. I could be wrong though. The theme, following the established pattern, will both be personified by the primary antagonist and be a psychological hurdle for Bruce.
So where does that leave us?
Obsession. Perhaps?
Bane is both obsessed with “venom” and with his metal proclivity. He is the closest we’ve seen to Batman’s brain equal. He does discover something about the Batman that no one ever has before…
Likewise, Bruce becomes obsessed with the mantle of the Batman. Nolan shows us that in the first two films. The mantle heals something broken inside him. But like every addiction/obsession, that can eat you. Can Bruce come to the realization that the mantle, the symbol of the Batman is larger than one man?
I don’t know… Just ranting!
Thoughts?
I think you should have helped write the screenplay!
The concept of Fear/Chaos/Rage is very interesting when looking at this series. I never looked at it that way. I definitely can see a scenario where Bruce sees the necessity to somehow MATCH Bane’s Rage in order to defeat him, which will lead to arrogance, which leads to his spine breaking defeat. Very interesting ideas, and a strong rant!
Wh is no one seeing this. Batman takes Joseph Gordon Levitt under his wing and teaches him because he’s a good cop. when bane breaks batmans back. JGL/Robin type character and saves the day
That is a hell of a thought. That could definitely work for a Nolan Batman film. It’d be a nice surprise and a great way to end his run. Nightwing/Robin doesn’t have to be Dick Grayson necessarily. Well done. I’ll be hoping for this scenario.
Azreal, without it being Azreal?
If Batman back will get Broken in the Movie I will be shock.
huh?
I dont know if id be happy with the idea of all the arkham villans being let loose. I say this because there would be inherent fight scenes involved and although im a massive fan of nolan’s work he is not the greatest fight scene director… Now if Nolan steps his game up or manages to somehow incorporate the styles of a more skilled director in that department i personally would be more than happy to that particular story line.
you say’n the fight scenes in Inception weren’t good?
I bet everything were talking about is totally whats NOT going to happen in the film. Nolan is probably sitting back and laughing to himself while reading all of our thousands of speculations….
Just as long as Joel Schumaker doesn’t take over for the next Batman film after this one, I will be happy.
@ tarkin713
I hate to ask but why would you or anyone worry about Joel Schumacher makin another Batman film? After Batman & Robin i doubt he’ll be touching any DC comic based film again, or be lucky his be brought up in the director’s chair by WB. Imo id be more worried about how Warner Bros. handles the Batman films. Afterall it was mostly them that first Batman franchise went crappy, Schumacher was partly to blame.
I don’t see how u can do the knightfall story line without Azrael showing up at some point…
THANK YOU.
Everybody on here is wondering how Batman can be temporarily paralyzed.
Bruce didn’t defeat Bane in the Knightfall storyline, his replacement did. AZRAEL
I believe Nolan won’t have Catwoman or Azrael take the limelight in the series-ender after building the character of Batman so honestly and brilliantly in the first two parts of this trilogy. Or else it would be an anti-climax of sorts. So…
…1. Catwoman won’t come infront of the camera unless she’s an anti-hero of sorts, stealing and thugging her way through.
…2. And Bane will NOT break Batman’s back to make way for Azrael.
This is a Batman movie. This is Batman;s swan-song. He should get the whole credit by the movie ends. That’s it.
I’m a fan of Catwoman, I hope she is in the movie a lot.
@Robert
May be you replied to a comment that you didn’t fully understand/comprehend. ‘Rises’ should be ABOUT BATMAN like it’s two prequels were. And so the climax should be about Batman getting the whole credit, especially with his redemption being the issue long due since his fall from grace in TDK.
…And I know that Nolan won’t ignore that issue.
Also, I can understand your demand for Catwoman being present in ‘Rises’ because I understand every actor/character/fan wants to have a piece of the cake called ‘Rises’ because it is going to be cool to be a part of a hot-cake but demanding for her role to be ‘a lot’ is like you going to the newly-wed Batman’s honeymoon and ultimately on the D-night, keeping him (the groom) locked outside of the room in the cold winter and enjoying the pleasures of marriage on the bed yourself.
If anybody loves Catwoman ‘a lot’, then he/she should request Warner Bros./Nolan to make a movie specially dedicated to her instead of her snatching Batman’s rightful space in a series dedicated TO BATMAN HIMSELF.
…keep in mind that other villans were introduced VERY briefly in the series (such as Zasz in BB). With villans such as Zasz, Catwoman (assuming she isnt there to HELP Batman), (possibly) Ra’s, and Falcone (never got closure on Carmine), it seems very possible that Bane could let the Arkam inmates loose. I, personally, will have lived a complete life if I could see one of…nay, my favorite comic book storyline done correctly on “the big screen”. Here’s to hoping it happens…
See what you all think of this:
Don’t know how Selina Kyle will fit in I think the Knightfall story would be a perfect fit in TDKR.
Possible villains released from Arkham/involved in wearing Batman down by Bane: Joker, Scarecrow, Two-Face, Black Mask, Riddler, Killer Croc, Zsasz
Bane will break Batman – JGL’s character, Blake, (who with Gordon wanted to help Batman catch all the released inmates) will take the mantle and save the day (hopefully as a new and improved Batman/Azrael). This will allow Bruce to recover/relinquish the cape and pass the torch to a new Batman. JGL would be a great successor for any upcoming reboot/JL movies.
Can’t wait to see what happens.
The return of Liam Neeson playing the iconic villain reveals an interesting nugget for contemplation.
Developing pace with dramatic depth, intertwining them into a double helix is the most complex part about writing. But only when a story reaches it’s nexus is when the good and evil characters meet, and for a brief second the audience nearly rises up off their seats, the air momentarily gets sucked out and everyone knows what’s about to go down. How this scene is handled is not only the most crucial moment of this movie but it stands to reason that if this scene doesn’t work. Then everything before it will come crashing down around it leaving a pile of smoldering ruin…The conclusion; might as well be the death of the main character… But this DARK KNIGHT RISES is directed by a pretty good storytelling magician.
So how will it go down you ask? For starters. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES may be similar to the original blueprint but with a twist. BANE not Bruce Wayne will be the one reflecting on his legacy globe trotting. As a lone General dispatched to destabilize operations with the tactical lethality of a shark. BANE is answerable to no one but aligned to Raj by an unbreakable code. Seek out and destroy: no matter the cost.
Wayne’s investigation of a mysterious wrecking ball that turns out to be a single individual traveling the globe. This individual just so happens to be looking for him as he discovers when his investigation stalls in Gotham.
“He’s here.”
It is my opinion but i believe that Raj will turn and side with Wayne in the finale. Knowing that this final piece. This final piece. And that no one has ever beat him. Infact, everyone who has crossed him has failed. Having defeated the special operations unit dispatched to capture him. This final figure stands between him. And total supremacy. This may even cause him to believe he is in fact indestructible. Deciding to kill Raj just for thinking he can speak to him as a regular man.
The rumor of Selina Kyle turning toward Batman’s side at the end supports the conclusion that they have to align against a common enemy. The only question is does she get killed before the mega battle or during. If chosen as the latter than her fate could reside in a battle against another female temptress. If the former. Bane is the trigger man. Sparking the expected thunderous exclamation point confrontation.
this movis sounds like it’s going to have to be at least two and a half hours
Catwoman=BAD. Casting that Hathaway chick makes it even worse.
He should have gone with that dragon tattoo chick and made her a wiry, crack head type.
He will get his back broken right at the start in the 1st act, then 2nd act all hell brakes loose via arkam and his recovery then 3rd act he rises and cleans up.
Oh and Inception was not a good movie. Pretentious load of bollocks. TDK however, one of the best.
wolverqueen…
…says you. I happen to think Catwoman is a great character, and Anne Hathaway definitely has the range to play her effectively. The whole point of Selina Kyle is that she (at least, according to one origin) grew up in the midst of crackheads and prostitutes. She engaged in the activities of the latter to survive but SPECIFICALLY AVOIDED the lifestyle of the former so that she could maintain some semblance of control in her otherwise downtrodden life…until she hit upon the idea of Catwoman. So, you basically came up with the exact opposite of a good, workable idea for her.
As for “Inception”, I don’t think you saw the same film I did. That’s a shame, because the “Inception” I watched was brilliant and exciting…Oh, well.
rong… Inception was just as good as TKR nolan can make any movie good and trust him he will make catwoman a good character.
There’s no way Nolan overlooked the fact that Bane discover’s the Batman’s identity. That’s too juicy for Nolan et al. to ignore!
archeon is spot on…
I wanna know if they go through with this, they can’t ignore the fact Joker is in arkham asylum. I hope they atleast briefly show him, or mention him. Out of respect to heath, he would want that.
@ Andrew
You’d be lucky if Joker is mentioned at all. Nolan stated & it’s been mentioned more than once that Joker won’t make any appearance, not even a cameo. Imo, i bet we’ll see a break out of inmates as seen in Batman Begins. Maybe Scarecrow makes a appearance aswell Dent being mentioned as he put alot of the mob behind bars in TDK.
to Andrew:That would be hard to do for those who read the leaked script after the movie came out or the book. They both mention that when Batman punches the Joker while he is hanging upside down. That it was a slow painful death blow. So, in the written versions, The Joker is dead. With Nolan killing off Rā’s al Ghūl who was supposed to know the secrets of immortality. I don’t see bringing The Joker back. And to bring the Joker back to me would be a disgrace to Heaths family I think. Also because, they would have to find a actor to play the Joker as brilliant as Heath did. And, I don’t know of any actor who was as brilliant in that kind of way (being just plain psycho.) other then Christian Bale in American Psycho. I think what Nolan is trying to go for here is a more realistic like Batman. Where when someone dies they die for good. Like in real life. And for Christian to play 2 roles of people in costumes in the movie I feel would be too draining on him. Heck there is rumors that this might be his last time doing Batman. Because, of the costume is too restrictive to do the things needed in the movies.
And, also in the idea of bringing in the Lazarus Pits. to me is a bad idea too. Because, they where not mentioned in the first movie. That would mean they would either have to go back and re-make Begins with the put included. Or do flashbacks and have it be like something we missed in Begins. That to me is a stupid idea. I hate movies that have flashbacks. Now, I wouldn’t mind it if they brought in the two daughters of Ra’s, Nyssa and Talia. Because, the recent cartoons show that Talia knows the secrets of the pits and has a love/hate relationship with Bruce. And, never mentions Nyssa. But, the comics shows that Nyssa knows. But, leaves us unsure of Talia knowing of them. I think it might be an ok spin for them both to know of the pits.
Finally, with the idea of showing Bruce going through recovery through out the movie. Its not that bad an idea to me. Heck it worked for the Rocky movies when he got the crap beat out of him and come back to beat the opponent in the movies. I mean there is like what 7 of those right? and didn’t the last one earn an Oscar nod? I think showing a kind of quick snippets after the fight. Of Alfred helping to get Bruce back on his feet. Then Bruce building up his strength to get back into shape to be Batman again. Also having show Bruce build a new suit that is more like a suit of armor. While Bane and the other psychos of Arkham Asylum taking over the city. Then also having show Bruce build a new suit that is more like a suit of armor.(to keep from being crushed again. That to me sounds like a good idea.
this is by a WIDE MARGIN the least readable thing ever posted on the internet. seriously, i really hope english isn’t your first language. or your second. and the LAST rocky movie getting an oscar nod? what the hell?? i’m at a loss here, so i’m giving up.
This is my “theory”…
In Christopher Nolans’ Batman “world” is real life. Gotham is gritty with a big underworld and when things happen, consequences for certain actions take place. It’s feels..real.
What I think is going to happen is that Bane WILL break Wanye’s back BUT at the end of the film. We NEVER see a Robin or even a Nightwing hinted that he will exist in Noland’s world. You know what I think he won’t either…this Batman works alone. In my thinking Batman will want someone to past the torch to since he would end up with a “permanent” injury.. his broken back via Bane. I think this is were a not so futuristic Terry McGinnis of Batman Beyond would fit in perfectly. Since Noland’s batman is pretty much done with this trilogy where I don’t really see a purpose of yet another reboot for Noland’s masterpieces so in doing this would keep Noland’s world in tact and would continue the series but it’ll be Terry going against the bad guys now or what’s left of the bad guys. Again, a not so futuristic Batman Beyond but one where Batman will perfect a suit with much more gadgets etc working with Lucius Fox. Plus Batman Beyond story trilogy could span into the future as major crime was cured until the “future” of things come into play.
I see JOSH STEWART was just cast…could this be Terry McGinnis or a knightwing??? He kinda would be a great Riddler too… the guy is a excellent actor. Again just my two cents. Big theory here but I think it’s a good one. What do you guys think?
@ Chris
Sorry Chris, but my honest opinion of that just seems… Not Nolan like. Id rather have Nolan conclude his franchise as this 3rd film be the last in a trilogy. If Bruce gets his back broken, then id rather see Talia go against her father’s wishes & her Bruce in the Lazerus Pits because the feelings they might in between them. I remembered in a episode of Batman Beyond animated series where Bruce wishes he was still young to be Batman again & Talia ( who’s really Ra’s who possesed his daughter’s body) talked Bruce into goin into the pits & make himself younger again. Even though it was for a short time. Just hope Batman doesn’t wear armor that enables him to fight, made outta iron or metal that would make him look like Ironman if he was to up against Bane.
@Chris – I’m not a huge fanboy of the director, so call me OCD on this, but it’s Nolan, not Noland. Chris Nolan is the director, not Chris Noland with a ‘d’ on the end. Jesus, get some observational skills; his name is only printed a dozen times in this article alone.
@WallyWest
That’s a valid assumption… but EVEN the use of the Lazarus Pit in Noland’s world would seem way more far fetched then my Terry McGinnis angle. Because with the Lazarus pit your touching on aspects of out-worldly events, reincarnation and all that. Again, I said this Batman Beyond version would be more “real” just upped amour and utilities/gadgets/spi-tech stuff. So how would that be “not Noland like”
If they do use the Lazarus pit in Noland’s world as an “actual” healing/reincarnation pool I will be TOTALLY surprised. I think if it is implemented in the movie it will be used more as one of Ra’s scare tactics or tricks (smoke and mirrors)to make people believe he has more powers beyond this world that he really does.
@ Chris
Still your Terry McGinnis angle seems far fetched, but so does the Lazerus Pit in Nolan’s film as alittle bit of me still feels thats odd that Nolan would have that in his film. But time will tell. That’s your opinion about the Batman Beyond version. But imo i can only seem filmakers doin Batman Beyond films if they were to follow continuity to the previous Batman franchise that Burton started. Whether if they want to ignore only Batman & Robin and have the film pick years later. Or wait for the next Batman reboot & have the Batman Beyond films pick up from those. Id be surprised if they make a live-action Batman Beyond film honestly.
Oh yeah, no doubt…it’s totally my opinion…not fact at all. Just an opinion and a prediction. The whole reason I do feel that Batman Beyond will be the next line of Batman films is simple. EVERYBODY loved Batman Beyond even for how unfortunately the short lived TV series was a few years back.
Just a few thoughts :
No body wants to see another Batman reboot…especially one that revisits Batman’s origin AGAIN. It’s been done to death. Noland’s version is as good as it gets. Why belittle it. And I would think they (WB) would want to continue Noland’s vision but without touching his actual movies but playing upon the mythos/style behind them.
Batman’s enemies in Noland’s world are for the most part extinguished/used up since they are mostly Mob-type criminal figures. I don’t have the feeling that they’ll ever use the Penguin, Poison Ivy or even the Riddler. The Joker in ways is like the Riddler in Noland’s world anyways.
After yeeears Batman Beyond gets it’s own comic series in 2010. Giving it much recognition plus receives a new Batman for the kids to latch onto and get familiar with. I see this as a underlining PR device. One that I actual love.
I mean yeah, Batman Beyond may not be apart of Noland movies but I am sure it will become a movie sometime down the road. If not now, def. after the Justice League movie(s). There is just sooo much potential there not to be considered.
Nolan’s Batman will have to be rebooted, but hopefully not with an origin. I love Nolan’s two films thus far, but an argument can be made, I think, that with Nolan sticking to his beloved Nolanverse, he has made his Batman almost the opposite what Batman should be. Nolan’s Bruce Wayne/Batman is the super-powered individual in the Nolanverse. By taking away the challenges of a regular man excelling in a world populated by superheroes and supervillains, Nolan has created a Batman who has all the advantages. Batman has billions of dollars and Wayne Tech which more or less defines him as an enhanced human with unlimited resources and cutting edge sci-fi technology. This ultra rich and powered up Dark Knight takes on thugs, gangsters, and thieves with none of his privileges, no superpowers, and yet he loses to these criminals with alarming frequency. Batman has been schooled by villains in both of Nolan’s movies and the Joker dominated Batman. Sure, Joker’s ultimate plot was foiled, but the Joker destroyed Batman’s greatest ally and created a new villain, killed the love of Bruce Wayne’s life, and forced Batman into hiding. I mean, Christ, it was a blowout. In the Nolanverse, being psychopathic is all it takes to beat Batman. Robbed of his most useful trait, contingency planning, Nolan’s Batman would not survive for a Bat-Moment in a proper DC Universe.
If DC has any idea to seed the future with possible franchise crossovers, JLA, or at least a persistent universe in which heroes exist, then Batman *must* be rebooted.
KNIGHTFALL is a wonderful arc and I think elements of that will work in RISES. Nolan has never adapted a compete Batman book, but rather borrowed elements from iconic works like YEAR ONE, A DEATH IN THE FAMILY, THE LONG HALLOWEEN, and THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. KNIGHTFALL will likely be borrowed from in a similar way. Batman may be severely beaten very early with recovery time focusing on Catwoman and/or (inset other Batverse player). Maybe even as a mentee?
The perfect candidate to replace Nolan will be David Fincher. I’d give him total control and a limit of 175 million.
Hopefully he wont reboot but bring the material into an even darker more “Hard R” realm. Preferably even if they have to sacrifice family ticket prices just to bring the material to a different and distinguishable level which matches Fincher’s palette.
Dale,
(“…proper DC Universe.”)
By that I hope if you mean critically-acclaimed novels like…
The Dark Knight Returns (1986), Year One (1987), Arkham Asylum (1989), The Long Halloween (1996-97), Dark Victory (1999), Gotham By Gaslight (1990), The Cult (1988), Son of the Demon (1987), A Death In The Family 1988), Hush (2002), Blind Justice (1989), Black And White (1996), Gothic (1990), Strange Apparitions (1977), A Lonely Place of Dying (1989), Knightfall (1993), Tower of Babel (2000), Thrillkiller (1998) and …THE KILLING JOKE (1988) …then…
…I believe Batman has taken a lot of beating from beings than lessers than him in those masterpieces and Nolan’s Batman pretty much conforms to those DC novels in whole and not only just moments, …IMO.
I can provide you examples of conformation if needed.
OOPS!!
I meant ‘beings lesser than him’.
@Amol
Yah, of course those. No references needed. Most of those referenced contain some aspect in Batman or the Rogue’s Gallery of the supernatural, technological, or physiological that would never be replicated in the Nolanverse. Expand that to the entire DCU proper, and you have a Batman that is not compatible in a world where Superman or Green Lantern exist.
I think that is evident and was my larger point.
As for me saying Batman was schooled in Nolan’s movie… that was hyperbolic, but he is certainly more of a reactive Batman than is typically portrayed in the modern era comics.
