The Dark Knight Rises to begin shooting in May 2011 Dark Knight Rises Production To Begin in May 2011

Christopher and Jonathan Nolan are currently plugging away at the screenplay for The Dark Knight Rises, with the intention of delivering a solid draft by January of next year. Both fellows are known for their secretive ways, though that hasn’t prevented rumors about Tom Hardy’s possible role or a Batman TV show spinoff from spreading around the Web.

Franchise stars Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman are essentially set to return for The Dark Knight Rises, as will Michael Caine, making the threequel his fifth collaboration with Chris Nolan after the first two Batman films, The Prestige, and this summer’s existential heist flick, Inception.

Caine spoke to Empire about the planned production schedule for The Dark Knight Rises and revealed that Chris Nolan now expects to complete shooting over the course of six months, with a May 2011 start date in mind. That would also allow time for the development of a new camera system that will enable Nolan and his longtime director of photography, Wally Pfister, to possibly shoot Dark Knight Rises entirely in the IMAX format.

Zack Snyder’s The Man of Steel will arrive alongside Nolan’s third Batman venture in the summer of 2012 and Warner Bros. has plans for the Superman reboot to begin shooting halfway through 2011 as well – even now that the family of Supes co-creator Jerry Siegel’s Superman lawsuit is moving forward (Sidebar – Joel Schumacher should just be thankful that Batman creator Bob Kane never took similar legal action against him for putting nipples on the Caped Crusader’s outfit).

Casting rumors for both Batman and Superman’s next big screen venture will start to heat up even more as the creative forces behind each project look to fill major roles (including that of the female leads in Dark Knight Rises and the new Man of Steel) before their respective productions get underway.

Stay tuned for more news concerning The Dark Knight Rises.

  1. Sweet, I wonder if maybe just maybe whoever is the new superman will get a small cameo in this film?

    • Since The Man of Steel would be a reboot, I’m thinking it would the other way around with Batman making a cameo in Superman. Either way will be sweet.

      • Even if Batman himself doesn’t cameo, I’d be satisfied if it was Bruce Wayne arriving for a business meeting. Not directly meeting Clark Kent, but picking up a newspaper with Superman and he comments on it. Yea, I put some thought into it.

      • Being the “expert” you think you are, you would know that Christopher Nolan has already stated before that the Batman and Superman from his movies operate in their own universes.

So it’s highly doubtful that Batman will cameo in the new Superman film or Superman appearing in Batman’s new film.

        • Gary,

I’ve about had it with you baiting people and you’re generally crappy attitude.

        • Gary, grow-up. And Snyder recently mentioned that he’s been talking with Nolan about a Superman/Batman.

        • Yeah, but when he said that, he wasnt involved with Superman whatsoever. We all know now thats not the case and the possibility of a mention or cameo is now on the table since the Nolans are involved with both Superhero Franchises.

  2. I heard that Wally Pfister won’t be shooting the film completely in IMAX, but he’s also not yet signed on for the film, so it’s possible.

  3. this thread will have 100 comments by tonight. I bet ya’. Unless Pottermania takes over.

that picture really makes me want to see a Batman/Superman movie. maybe someday.

    • Pittman

      ROFL! :)

    • haha

  4. Why on earth would Nolan do that to his vision on batman? He is not going to have Batman or Superman cameo in either films.

  5. Moviefan10 is right. Nolan has said that his version of Batman only works because there is an understanding that there are no other superheroes in that world. If there were other superheroes, then Bruce Wayne’s idea to create a fearsome bat identity wouldn’t be all that fearsome if there were a bunch of other costumed heroes running around.

    • Tell that to Marvel and all there Super Hero Movies.

    • What ever dude. There are JLA members that are scared of the Bat and he is on their side. The normal humans would be scared regardless because he doesn’t look like your normal good guy. They would be right. I would like to see Clark Kent make an appearance in this movie. That would be sweet.

  6. WB did hint @ a Batman/Superman movie in “I Am Legend”.

    • I wish- that was a leftover from the batman bs superman movie from a few years back. Sort of an inside joke

  7. the batman/superman pic above is the background on my phone. :)

  8. I don’t really think we’ll be seeing the sort of crossovers u get in the recent marvel movies no, certainly nolan wants a sense of realism in the bat movies so superman making cameo would just make That all redundant, I’m happy tho the dc characters keep to there own little universes, its a different set up with marvel l, they are being a bit more ambitious story wise, now I love marvel but let’s face to the general public and un comic book geek bat and supes are known the world over, they don’t need to be popping up in each others movies ,

    • I’m guessing that Nolan would entertain introducing Clark Kent pre-revelation of his superhuman quality. I am not sure what to think about Bale as an ongoing casting for the Batman if he becomes a superreallistic human in a superhuman universe. Right now he is just super rich with a vision. Maybe the point of his ‘rising’ might be some actual exposure to the mutant vision or something. Anyone recall the Burton Superman concept?

As all this plays out, I am glad to say that I really dont know. I did get it from a very reliable source that we may be treated to a cameo of the Riddler after all… of course we know that the minute this hits the grapevine there may be a retraction with some hint of a glimpse of the Joker instead… the point here is that Nolan knows he is holding the cards on all this. It’s his universe and we just live in it really.

In any case, Just dont think that Gordon-Levitt is the right person to carry the weight of either of these and thus I would put money on seeing him in another role whether the rumors play out or not.

  9. i still hope we see the riddler in this film even if its him locked up and kind of like hannibal lecter giving batman clues to the real villain, and maybe we’ll see the assassin version of poison ivy, and jockers furious harley quinne. well those are the three i really hope to see, and bane would be cool if nolan did him right.

  10. J’adore Christian Bale ahhhhhhh!!!!
