Thanks to 20th Century Fox’s brilliant official and viral promotional campaign for Prometheus – plus Marvel over-saturating the market with Avengers material – all combined with Warner Bros.’ virtually non-existent marketing for The Dark Knight Rises in recent months – and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy finale has been left in the dust, prompting a number of film geeks to drop it from atop their Most Anticipated Lists for 2012.
That will surely change once Avengers arrives in (U.S.) theaters next week, with a third Dark Knight Rises trailer attached. In the meantime, early reactions both official and unconfirmed – coupled with new reports that the film will include over an hour of IMAX footage – are sure to stir things up, as far as talk around the movie blogosphere goes.
First, here is a confirmed early reaction to Dark Knight Rises from WB executive vice president of domestic distribution, Jeff Goldstein (via The Wrap):
“This is what a summer popcorn movie is all about. I don’t want to oversell it, but this has elements that are ground-breaking and are really a thrill ride.”
Next, we have an unconfirmed early reaction from what Cosmic Book News describes as “a reliable source” (head over to CBN for the full reaction, which includes a possible MILD SPOILER):
It is one of those films that leaves you on the edge of your seat much like ‘The Dark Knight’ did, in that it feels like a rollercoaster, like you have no idea where the story will go. I have been told a summary of the movie, and I definitely don’t want to spoil it, but if you think you know where it is heading, think again! It will leave you thinking “how do did they come up with that; it’s genius.”
Catwoman is more in line with the comics than people think despite her not having a whip or cowl. It’s more character driven and less about looks. Bane is so frickin’ ruthless it’s bad, like Joker is crazy and does his crimes on a whim in any style; Bane is like a freight train and has the city bricking it.
So, to summarize: we have a vague, encouraging statement from a studio executive and an anonymous claim from someone who (for all we know) simply pieced together previously-released information about Dark Knight Rises‘ plot – or tidbits from Tom Hardy’s interview, wherein he compares/contrasts Bane and Joker - so as to make their reaction seem legit.
Yeah, suffice it to say, you shouldn’t get over-excited by any of this. Still, positive buzz is positive buzz, no matter the source. Besides, we won’t have to wait long to see some additional footage from the film – and then, we can decide for ourselves whether or not Nolan’s last Caped Crusader flick is his best.

Dark Knight Rises to Feature An Hour of IMAX Footage
Speaking of how Dark Knight Rises will look: the Wall Street Journal has confirmed that Nolan shot more than 60 minutes of the film using the 65 mm lens and IMAX camera technology. To put it in perspective, that’s well beyond the previous estimates of 40-50 minutes – and more than double that in either The Dark Knight or last winter’s IMAX hit, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.
[SIDENOTE: The WSJ report incorrectly states that Dark Knight features some 40 minutes of IMAX footage. Whether or not that reflects on the accuracy of the claim about Dark Knight Rises' IMAX footage, has yet to be determined.]

"My Batman movie will be THIS BIG!"
Here is a statement from Nolan, on his decision to shoot so much of Dark Knight Rises in IMAX:
“There was a huge irony that we were told it would be too difficult to shoot a Hollywood movie on IMAX when we had this gigantic camera department, grips, electric, hundreds of people working for us. These were cameras that had been to the top of Mount Everest, to the bottom of the ocean and into outer space, but people thought we couldn’t make a feature film. It was absurd.”
Nolan has made no secret of the fact that he considers IMAX “the best film format that was ever invented” and he – along with his trusted director of photography, Wally Pfister – even gave thought to shooting all of Dark Knight Rises using IMAX technology, at one point. As anyone who remembers watching the bank robbery/prologue from The Dark Knight – or the Hong Kong sequence – on a 70 mm IMAX screen can attest, Nolan truly knows how to utilize that format for its optimal potential.
Count us all the more excited to see the filmmaker step up his IMAX game to the next level with Dark Knight Rises.
The Dark Knight Rises in theaters around the U.S. on July 20th, 2012.

AHHHH!
“This is what a summer popcorn movie is all about. I don’t want to oversell it, but this has elements that are ground-breaking and are really a thrill ride.”
As if he would say anything else!
I’m gonna have to agree: what else would he say lol. He can’t give negative criticism on the movie his company is producing — which is why I’ll take this comment with a grain of salt (just as I did when marvel’s execs commented on TA)
I’m still incredibly psyched to see this on opening day, but up until now, i haven’t really seen anything that’s impressed me (which is why I’m really rooting for this new trailer coming out soon)
I too will be there on opening “knight” to see it, but like you, I’m not impressed by anything I’ve seen really, beyond the prologue being fairly exciting.
It’s strangely convenient that all this has suddenly come up just as The Avengers is getting great reviews…
It’s not convenient at all…
It’s very much intentional IMO – Avengers is all the rage right now: everyone’s talking about it, it’s getting all these great reactions, the promotional material for the movie is everywhere, etc, etc. So of course WB would want to get some “early reactions” and a new trailer out there ASAP to just “jog our memory” of the other big blockbuster coming out soon.
I’ll watch this new Batman movie when it comes out on Netflix, but none of the previous ones have really impressed me that much so far. I am more anxious for Avengers, Prometheus, The Woman in Black, & The Raven.
I find it odd that while I will see TDKR, I am not really looking forward to it. I don’t know why that is however.
I feel the same way.
Ug, I hate the phrase “popcorn movie” – and not that I want to come across as a “Nolanite” or anything, but after seeing most of his work, I seriously doubt that any of his movies could EVER fit a horrible description like that.
I just can’t picture DKR being a “popcorn movie” — I mean, Transformers 3 is a “popcorn movie” and that’s really not what I’m hoping for from TDKR
I totally agree!!
I wouldn’t use the phrase “popcorn movie” to describe anything Nolan has done. So if TDKR turned out that way I’d be extremely dissapointed.
But like everyone has said already you have to take that statement with a big ole grain of salt when you consider who it’s coming from. The studio wants as many butts in seats as possible so they’ll say anything to help achieve that.
“Popcorn” isn’t nessacerily a negative term, it depends on the context. Here, I think he was using it as a synonym of blockbuster. That said, it’s usually used to describe light, fun movies so I wouldn’t call anything of Nolan’s a “popcorn movie” either.
Yeah, I felt the same way when I first saw the comment. But then you have to realize, like DrSam and Kevin7 said, this is coming from a Warner Bros studio exec. What he says is obviously going to be biased and is going be to geared towards getting as much money as possible. You don’t have to take it as a fact.
The “reliable source” sounds like a big liar, and the exec gave the most generic praise i have ever heard for a summer movie.
nonetheless im sure it’ll be a decent film, not great, but decent.
also, i have a feeling that marvel and warner bros’ have some sort of an understanding that tdkr wont be marketed heavily until after the avengers is released, and marvel won’t be hyping any of its movies between avengers and tdkr. or maybe nolan decided to not try to directly compete with avengers for attention, just wait it out till the avengers is done and then go out full force as the sole superhero juggernaut of this summer (yeah, im not taking amazing spiderman seriously as competition. now if it were spideman 4, things would be a lot different)
If it were “Spider-man 4″ I wouldn’t bother going to see it.
ASM looks great. It really needed an overhaul, maybe not this soon, but it really needed it.
Oh, yeah… IMO.
Agreed! If it were Spider-Man 4 there is zero chance I would have caught it at cinemas. It is serious competition whatever anyone says, great cast, evrything looking great so far. Gonna be ace. TDKR, not so sure,
Once again, I agree.
If SM4 were coming out this year, I wouldn’t bother even watching it on DVD, but TASM is definitely one to see (IMO at least). It’s looking great.
But even though the footage of TDKR I’ve seen so far didn’t impress me, I still have complete faith that it’s going to rock!
TASM is most definitely going to be competition for TDKR (anyone who thinks otherwise doesn’t know much about the general public’s reactions to the latest trailer), but I think DKR will have the upper hand and rake in the biggest bucks (I mean… it’s BATMAN!
)
*facepalm* you didn’t get what I meant. I was talking about the box office gross not the quality of the movies themselves. ‘I’ am looking forward to the amazing spider-man, it looks fantastic and seems like there’s going to be less of the melodramatic BS of the raimi movies and more serious character arcs and badass action –and of course, lets not forget, a chance to revisit old villains with more respect (eg. Venom) and see some new ones on the screen (Carnage!)
what i meant was that very few people seem as excited about amazing spiderman as they are about avengers and tdkr. the raimi spiderman movies were an established franchise and would’ve proved to be a serious contender to be the top grossing movie this summer. so in terms of MAKING MONEY, spiderman 4 would have been serious competition for avengers and tdkr, whereas the reboot… not so much.
(i hope it makes enough to carry on to sequels though)
as an example, look at the top galleries section just on this website… it used to have all three: avengers, tdkr and spiderman. but now its been removed in favor of superman and the hobbit.
every other person i talk to forgets that “they’re doing the spiderman movies again”. and trust me, in my line of work, i talk to a LOT of people about movie business.
Just hearing there’s over an hour of IMAX footage alone is worth the ticket price.. It’s hard not to be impressed with the things we’re hearing about this film on a visual level
I don’t get how over an hour of imax filming isn’t impressive enough for the people who were dissapointed with what we have seen. If you saw the dark knight in imax ud realized how something little like the banks heist in imax as it pans over chicago is absolutely mind blowing.
I’m excited by the Comic Book News interview (even though its not confirmed).
Nolan is a master of misdirection. You think the movie is going one way, but out of nowhere, everything changes. Just watch Memento. Or the Prestige. Or even Inception. There are so many people on these sites that think they know exactly how the movie is going to play out, be it from set photos, set videos, interview slips, etc. etc. “Miranda Tate is Talia al Ghul! Huge Twist!” or “Batman is going to die and John Blake is going to take up the mantle of the bat!” There is so much speculation and there are fans (myself included) who think they know how the movie will turn out. All I’m saying is, I believe Nolan will have plenty of twists and turns in store for us, and honestly, we know very little about the plot, no matter how much you think you do.
That’s all i have to say. And it’s IMHO
“WHEN GOTHAM IS ASHES..YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION TO DIE!!!”
BANE WILL BRING THE PAIN JULY 20th.
Damn! if only you’d said “20th JULY” instead that would have rhymed!
lol anticlimax
“Catwoman is more in line with the comics than people think despite her not having a whip or cowl”
I call BS. This person is obviously clueless about what Catwoman is and is not. Sure the cat cowl isn’t completely necessary but for her to NOT be wielding her iconic whip is like stripping Batman of his batarangs, or grappling hook. So fail on Nolan’s part imho.
I’m still on the fence about this movie and these early reviews are doing nothing for me. I also just re-watched TDK last night and have to admit I got bored enough mid-way through to get up and do something else on my computer until the end. Guess I’m not as big a “Nolanite” as some. /shrug
Especially consider half the released images she is carrying a gun.
lol Batman used a batarang like….Once? o and that was in Begins. That thing wasn’t even a batarang! it was a stupid ninja bat star! Guess Nolan should be crucified for not having batarangs and a whip!…Who gives a shyt if Catwoman doesn’t have her whip???….O yea hard core nerds thats right
A semantic question: Does one hour of IMAX footage equal one hour of the film will actually be in IMAX, or is the WSJ just saying that at the beginning of the post production process there was roughly an hour of IMAX film? Because if that is the case it could easily be edited down to 40 minutes in the theatrical release.
Am I just being stupid? (Probably), but why isn’t the whole movie in Imax? Why only an hour?
IMAX cameras are much louder and heavier, and you can only film short amounts at once. And it’s more expensive than regular cameras/film.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imax#Feature_films_partially_shot_on_IMAX_cameras
Plus I think its more for environments and such its really hard to shoot a closeup scene with imax cause you have to be a certain dsitnace
I think it’s natural for The Avengers to be getting a lot of attention at the moment – people are just happy to be finally seeing one of this year’s biggest films and no longer having to dream about it! I’m sure The Dark Knight Rises will get it’s fair share of coverage in due time.
I hope the new trailer is better, the last trailer was very unimpressive.
-I’ll be seeing it IMAX depending on the trailers and REAL reviews leading up to the release.
“It’s more character driven and less about looks.”
Interesting and lame at the same time.
“It’s more character driven and less about looks.”
I would prefer it be less depressing than TDK. I can’t finish that movie now. Saw it once in the theaters and liked it. Bought it on Blu-ray but I can’t get past the gloominess and problems I see in it now.
I had the same problem with it. It’s not that it wasn’t a good film, it’s just I didn’t find it an enjoyable film to watch. Not a lot of fun to be had.
God knows what little kids thought of it!?
I’m liking that Nolan and Warner haven’t over done the promo campaign for Dark Knight Rises unlike what Disney and Marvel have done for Avengers. Meaning that I haven’t seen the movie with in the trailers for the film. I want to be surprised when I do go. Sometimes it’s better to be secretive then let it all hang out. Lastly, I feel it’s my own opinion that matters upon seeing DKR, not some critic. I’m my own critic, thank you.
Just the combination of Disney ( Make is a SAFE ” kiddie ” movie ) Studios and Stan Lee’s PREDICTABLE cameo guarnantees that it will be ” The Avengers ” that will be the ” popcorn movie. ”
Oh, and let’s not forget Joss Whedon’s usual, by the numbers, jokey , corn ball, ensemble – banter that we’ve already seen in Alien Resurrection, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Serenity, Dollhouse, etc….
I can already see Robert Downey JR CHEWING that dialogue that Whedon has written specifically for him. Obviously, RDJ is gonna ham it up and get the spotlight. He is, after all, THE STAR. Go ” team” Avengers.
When it all comes down to it, “The Dark Knight Rises” will be a better film than “The Avengers.” ( Rotten Tomatoes as an average, will prove that emperically-statistically.)
TDKR will also out gross the Avengers on both domestic and international box office recipts. At the end of the year those numbers will speak for themselves.
That’s the bottom line.
I also think the avengers is considered a popcorn flick. My friends have seen it and they said its a lot of action and team banter. Which they really liked but prefer a story driven movie. I think the avengers will gross less than the hobbit and dark knight and that is all
At this point, bad mouthing Whedon just makes you look bitter. The man may not be to your taste, but clearly he knows what he is doing. I love the hate that Nolanites are giving The Avengers. You might as well be wearing a tshirt that says I am afraid The Avengers will out perform The Dark Knight Rises. Go and watch and enjoy both, I am.
I hope you don’t mean me. I said nothing bad mouthing the avengers. I just said I think it would get 3rd best in the box office
You also cantpretend like you don’t know what kind of movie whedon makes. Its the same formula everytime. Witty team banter, makes sure everyone gets there shining moment and a lot of fun. That will be the avengers I’m pretty sure. I saw cabin in the woods and it was the same dialouge. He can’t make a dark serious movie that’s why he doesn’t. He makes fun movies there is no doubt about it. But if you want a darker edgier movie he isn’t your director.
That being said all directors have there tendencies whichbis what makes the avengers and DKR so different
@avatar_popco: well said man.
I just don’t think one should judge (and frankly, bash) the movie before you’ve seen it…
I’ll be enjoying Avengers AND TDKR when it comes out in theaters… I’m just a little sad that some won’t do that, but whatever… while they’re here ranting about how “Stan’s cameo will ruin the movie”, and how “RDJ will hog the spotlight”, I’ll be in the theater watching the movie.
I agree, it really erks me when people judge a movie before seeing it. Like they were there for the making of said movie or something.
Well, yes, lets wait for the numbers. Because all due respect, I think you’re wrong. I think The Avengers will kill TDKR internationally. Marvel films always do well over seas.
Agreed. Let’s just wait for the numbers.
But this is not a sport. TDKR and The Avengers will both be smashes. In their own way. Both completely different in their tones.
It’s just that I hope one day we can have a BAD ASS Avengers movie. Those are my favorite Marvel books. And in those stories there is darkness, danger and brutal confrontation , sometimes death. Aside from the ensemble, it’s not Firefly.
I’ve read all the published Avengers reviews. I’ll be there to see for myself NEXT Friday.
I think your heavily, HEAVILY underestmating The AVENGERS over a 3rd BATMAN that’s basically gonna be no different than the other 2, minus a 2nd rate villain in Hardy… The AVENGERS is so damn good that it really makes TDKR look bad in comparison and only proves that you can still make an Epic superhero movie without resorting to having to make it always “Dark and Overly Serious” and Joss Whedon has proven that.. The AVENGERS has basically beaten TDKR before the movie has even come out..LOL!!!
No.
These movies are both going to rock and pull in big numbers….BUT The Avengers will pull in more money around the globe. Just the buildup from the solo movies will be the main reason I think. I personally dont care which movie wins as far as sales but some of you will see the loser as some kind of failure. Neither movie will be a failure. Not even close.
The only reason TDK grossed what it did was because of the death of Heath Ledger. Sad but true. Not to take away from TDK, it’s a great movie, one of my favorites in fact, but HL’s death generated a lot of attention for people that would have otherwise not been interested. I’m just saying. Just judging by what I’ve seen, which admittedly is not a lot, my excitement has gone way down. The bad costumes, Bane’s unintelligable, garbled voice( I really hope they fix that in post) it all just kills excitement for TDKR IMO. So far it’s looking really meh, to me personally.
Avengers is looking awesome, nothing but good things have been said by people who have ACTUALLY seen it. I think it could take TDKR, unless TDKR starts showing some really amazing stuff and real soon.
That’s the point…. so many people saw the other one its the 3rd highest grossing movie. Meaning everyone will see it because they saw the last one. I keep hearing that ledger argument and it doesn’t matter cause people see sequals after the one beforehand was great. That’s like saying avatar 2 won’t make a lot of money because the first one was only visually appealing…
IMO that argument doesnt work.
This is gonna rock don’t doubt me on this!
Viewers should by now acknowledge the difference between the Avengers and TDKR. Avengers is a straight shot action colorful fun movie of the summer with a whole lot of characters that we all learn to love. It’s the first time ever that all these superheroes gets to share a screen time. Personally I can’t wait for it as so do many Malaysians around me.
It’s an eye candy and easy to grasp concept. The old concept of good vs. evil. Plain and simple fun. When it comes to TDKR, I’m feeling nervous and excited in watching it. Nervous because TDK previously had made me think outside the box when it comes to movie making. It had so many different levels of philosophy and concepts that not many Malaysians or Asians in general could grasp. I remember watching TDK with a friend and the first thing he commented was – it’s good but not much action in it. I was awestruck with that comment thinking whether he had seen the same thing. Clearly, we don’t share the same opinion.
Ever wonder why TDK is the 3rd all time grossing movie in the US? The Westerners understood the sublime piece in this. Check out TDK position in the world wide chart and you will find it way below the ranking. Why? Asians outnumbers moviegoers around the world and many of them prefer excitement over substance. I don’t agree that TDK was famous because of Heath Ledger’s death. It was because it is Christopher Nolan’s finest masterpiece. And he promised that this one will be his last of the series. That alone should seal it for me. Not the preview. When was the last time you seen a movie as good as its preview? Good movies have the simplest preview. It’s that good that they won’t want to give anything away. Words from the viewer is the best marketing tool for a movie. I remember watching Titanic back in Dec 97 during the first midnight show. I counted there were only 16 audiences with me at that time. Weeks later, the cue was so long until you can’t see the end. You see this trend with the Asians? They are too much into previews and no knowledge on others. No one knew back then who was James Cameron. I knew him from the Abyss, Aliens and Terminator.
Whatever it is I know Chris would let us down with this 3rd and final installment and as for Avengers, I will be ready with my popcorn smiling and cheering all the way. Cheers!
Yeah Asians don`t get philosophy.Because movies lyk Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, or The Hero were just the run of the mill action movies without underlying philosophies
If you believe that Asians prefer excitement over substance, Ong Bak, Ip Man, 7 Samurai, Yojimbo, Ran, Rashomon, Farewell my concubine, Battle Royale, or Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films to name a few, were just flicks with no philosophical and psychological lesson.
I just saw the dark knight rises and i am utterly dissapointed. If you see this movie PLEASE dont go in with hype i dont care if you loved the last one this movie is not worth all the hype its getting. The ending was horrible and bane and catwoman were ridiculous to say the least. They should have rebooted the series. The fact that bruce dies by blowing himself up with banes army is ridiculous. This is the only film from christopher nolan that I dont like.
Yes cause you would have seen the movie this early…. pathetic
Considering that one of my uncles work at warner brothers yea your damn right i would have seen the movie this early. Watch who your talking to trey……..pathetic
Anyone can claim what they want, your uncle’s VP for Warner, Some blogger’s uncle is The King of Siam. True or not, that ending is, to say the least, gibberish. How can the Dark knight Rise if he has to blow himself up?
If you’re uncle works at WB and let you watch the movie, then my aunt is the Queen of England lol
Come on dude… get real. The move isn’t even finished yet…
My girl friend’s wicked step sister works for Stan Lee’s proctologist and so we both got the chance to see Captain America TWO!!! I’m not gonna give anything away but it was AWESOME!!
Check that cool kid’s response at the bottom.
Now I recently read something that was billed as a RUMOR t Comicbook Movie.Com that BANE breaks BATMAN’S leg, not his back like all the fans are expecting.. Is this true and if so, will all the Nolan fans be on suicide watch 24/7 if this should occur???? And also, will The AVENGERS beat TDKR silly at the box office knowing how bad you think the movie sucks??? Sincerely, BKB: EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HERO
the fire rises
For MARVEL??? Yes.. For WB and TDKR??? Not so much
Okay… now you’re starting to troll a little dude
Let’s keep it civil…
For all we know Avengers and DKR will both be awesome.
I’ll go watch this movie on the first day. Chris Nolan’s a visionary and since this is his final Bat movie, I’m very very sure he will give us his ultimate Batman flick that we would enjoy and love.
“WHEN GOTHAM IS ASHES…YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION TO DIE!!!!!”
BANE WILL BRING THE PAIN ON THE 20TH OF JULY!!!!
AS FAR AS THE WHOLE AVENGERS VS THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
I UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE DC VS MARVEL RIVALRY BETWEEN
THE RESPECTIVE FANBASES. BUT WHY NOT SEE BOTH, BOTH FILMS
ARE GOING TO KICK SOME MAJOR ASS. LIVE A LITTLE, SEE BOTH.
I’ve said it once, I’ve said it again, and I’m saying it now: I hope TDKR and Avengers make the EXACT amount of worldwide gross. I mean seriously, this back and forth about which will make more is just comical.
Thank you, Kahless! I don’t get why movies (or the comics they are made after) have to create such a rift. I am an avid reader of good comics, no matter the company. I am an avid watcher of good movies, no matter the company. Let’s just shut up and enjoy what will [hopefully] be enjoyable experiences.
As I said on another thread, I got to see TDK again this past weekend, and I found myself enjoying and appreciating it even more than I had before. Contrary to what many people have said, for MY part at least, Ledger’s death did not make the film more interesting; it simply saddened me that I would never again see a continuation of such a wonderfully brutal and cunning portrayal of the Joker (at least as done by Ledger). I just thought the film was brilliant. This, plus everything (little though that actually is) I’ve seen and read about TDKR is getting me even more excited about its opening in a couple of months…and about its newest trailer next week.
The fact that the trailer is showing in front of TA is icing on the cake, since I’m looking forward to that as well.
I have no doubt that both films will do extremely well once released and meet our expectations.
I love how everyone was blown away by TDK and now people are wary about TDKR just because the first two trailers suck. I know a trailer is supposed to be exciting and get us hyped, but after watching TDK i get enough hyped anyway. Plus, I have to doubt the last trailer will kick ass. Inception’s third trailer was amazing, this should be too.
LOL its kind of funny how you guys think im joking. I wish i could see your face when you go see the movie XD
Instead of replying on our comments, you make up another comment to say something how you watched TDKR.Sure Nolan screened a rough cut to Warner execs, but it doesn’t mean they’re gonna let others watch it until maybe last week of June to early July.
LOL
successful troll is “that cool kid”
Ummm, don’t you mean “successful”? I don’t think anyone really thinks cool kid is succeeding.
OK Unsuccessful troll is “that cool kid”.
lol
I wonder why Prometheus isint getting as much hype.
heard it was good here http://bit.ly/darkknightrisesreviews
I loved the movie. I saw it opening day. In my opinion it was well thought out, was tied to the other two movies, had great special effects, and had a brilliant twist and fitting ending. I don’t know why so many people are giving it bad reviews, if you compare it to the Dark Knight it was much more intense and had more conflict (internal and external). I give it a 5/5
