New ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Catwoman Image Shows Full Costume & Weapon

[UPDATE: Check out Catwoman alongside Batman in a new EW cover.]

As Marvel’s The Avengers comes down the final stretch to its theatrical debut, attention will slowly but surely start turning back toward DC/Warner Bros. Dark Knight Rises, the final to Chris Nolan’s Batman movie trilogy, which is also one of the most highly-anticipated films of 2012.

We won’t get your hopes up with promises of anything truly spectacular, but today we do have a piece of promotional art that is certainly fodder from some good discussion: a new hi-resolution look at Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle / Catwoman.

Hathaway being cast as Catwoman has arguably been the most divisive aspect of The Dark Knight Rises so far. Most fans are pumped about seeing Inception star Tom Hardy play Batman’s nemesis, Bane (provided they can actually understand what the heck he’s saying behind that mask), but Hathaway has not received the same level of support. In short: there are many who believe that Nolan has (for a third time) miscast one of the major female roles in his Batman film (following the much-derided castings of Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, respectively).

Take a look at Hathaway as Catwoman, below:

Aside from having Hathaway play the part, the actual Catwoman costume has come under a lot of scrutiny since it was first revealed. From the headpiece – which we can now see is a mask with high-tech goggles that flip up to become “cat ears” – to the booty-tight spandex and sharpened high-heel stripper boots, both guys and gals alike have been critical of Nolan’s vision of this femme-fatale. Throw in the gun featured in this pic (instead of Catwoman’s traditional S&M-style bullwhip) and we’re likely about to see a whole new round of complaints…

UPDATE: Check out Catwoman and Batman on the cover of Entertainment Weekly:

I love Anne Hathaway and think she has more depth as an actress than she has had the opportunity to show us. She’s also sexy but not overtly.
Can’t wait to see her portrayal of Cat Woman.
However, I must say that I’m a huge fan of Tim Burton’s ” Batman Returns ” ( which I find better that Burton’s first “Batman” ) and don’t think Hathaway can rival Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. Her portrayal of Catwoman was dripping with sex, sensuality and viciousness.

If any of you guys haven’t seen Batman Returns, give it a chance. It’s very dark and tragic. Much like TDK. The Blu Ray transfer is exquisite.

After looking at TDKR pic of Bale/Wayne and Hathaway/Kyle dancing at the center of what looks like a ball or some party, it just struck me; In “Batman Returns” there’s a scene that is basically the exact same thing where Keaton/Wayne and Pfeiffer/Selena Kyle are both dancing while exchanging dialogue.

Selina: “Mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it.”
Bruce: “A kiss can be even deadlier.”

Yeahhhhhhhh! Those are the classic lines during that scene. A reversal, if you will.

She look stunning. You can see the personality of catwoman right through. It’s got the classy thief look. If she covers up the whole head, it won’t be the same. She’ll just be the normal thief. Nolan is a clever guy. This is a character that’ll stand out. Theatricality and deception are powerful agents. You can see it right there.

Of course Batman will be portrayed countless times over, but Nolan said this is HIS last Batman. Also, Bale said he will never be Batman unless Nolan is directing. So, if this in fact Nolan’s last, it’s also Bale’s. However, it will be rebooted sooner rather than later because there is talks of a Justice League movie being planned. Who knows how much merit that holds though. Either way, another director will come along & put their own spin on it, for better or for worse.

Well it reminds me of the old 1966 show in a way with Eartha Kitt and Juile Newmar’s costume. Which was tight and black, and had a mask and ears. I hope the gun is just for the promo shot. Or a backup weapon if she losses the whip. So relax and see how it plays out.

I think the outfit woulda been better with some type of cowl but im still excited about this movie and to see how Hathaway portrays Catwoman..she does look sexy!

I just hope her part in this movie is minimal, if I have to see her run around in this ridiculous costume with those idiotic heels for 2 1/2 hours it will ruin this movie. Her current comics look would have fit perfectly into Nolan’s established tone and realistic look, they should have just copied it directly. Although Hathaway can be sexy, it’s a different kind of sexy than the way Catwoman is portrayed, everything about this character is wrong, better to have just left her out of it and concentrated on Bane.

I was incredibly skeptical when Nolan cast Heath Ledger as the Joker and my mind was blown with his performance. Give Anne Hathaway a chance…. she may surprise you.
