Warner Bros.-based horror label Dark Castle has just picked up the rights to the graphic novel The Nye Incidents, an alien abduction/murder mystery released by indie comic company Devil’s Due Productions, back in July of 2008.
Usually I would say “Score one for comic book films!” except that A) I know nothing about this comic book; B) At first glance The Nye Incidents looks like a re-hash of early X-Files; C) It was written by sci-fi/horror novelist Whitley Strieber, the man who co-wrote the book that was adapted into The Day After Tomorrow. Color me skeptical.

Did I also mention that Whitely Strieber claims to have been visited by “otherworldly beings” (he won’t call them aliens) back in 1985 while at his cabin in upstate New York? And that he put out a book about the “experience” in 1987? Guess that novel wasn’t enough, so, onto the graphic novel…
Here’s a brief plot synopsis of The Nye Incidents. See if you can count how many tracks Strieber’s mind runs on:
Lynn Devlin is a medical examiner who thinks she has seen everything Nye County has to throw at her. She copes with methodical, rational logic. But when a grotesque murder of a supposed alien abductee occurs that cannot be solved with her scalpel and microscope, Lynn finds her detachment is shattered, and her dreams haunted by large, dark, oval-shaped eyes. Now, only one thing is certain: There’s a killer loose in the alien abductee community… human or otherwise!
Tell me again how that is NOT a re-hash of Mulder and Scully’s early adventures? Seriously, if I were to black-out the name of the main character and show you that synopsis again, telling you that it was the plot for the 3rd X-Files movie, you’d probably believe me.
Guess Dark Castle didn’t learn from last summer’s X-Files 2 movie fiasco: aliens are so 1990’s, we live in the era of Fringe: parallel dimensions and genetic mutations!
Dark Castle’s Joel Silver, Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce The Nye Incidents, along with Daniel Alter, who co-produced Fox’s Hitman. No writer has yet been tapped to handle the script (maybe they’re holding out for another “abductee” with a gifted pen).
Looks like The Nye Icidents is going to be a faint blip on my movie radar. Does this kind of movie hold any appeal for you?

the fact that it has the co-producer of “hitman” attachment is more than enough reason for me not to watch this
Silver Pictures is out of touch with the audience. He or his research staff have no clue. They keep acquiring useless material for movies it’s quite the joke. I think the Wachowski Brothers have alot to do with Joels recent ineptness.
