Daredevil made waves as the first Marvel Netflix series with its brutal violence and dark urban-noir aesthetic, followed by the more overtly "topical" Marvel/Netflix series, Jessica Jones. Now Daredevil season 2 is set to arrive in just under a month (at the time of writing this), and fans are once again eager to revisit the continuing adventures of blind superhero/attorney Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) as he fights to preserve the peace in New York's embattled Hell's Kitchen neighborhood.

Marvel/Netflix have now unveiled a second full-length trailer for Daredevil season 2. Whereas the previously-released season 2 trailer focuses heavily on Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal), this new Daredevil preview shifts its focus to the complex relationship between Matt and his ex-lover/ninja assassin Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung).

Check out the trailer for yourself below:

While Daredevil's rivalry with a more violent form of urban vigilante in The Punisher looks to be the main story thread in Daredevil season 2, the above trailer suggests that Matt and Elektra's plot thread could be equally important, in certain regards ; both in terms of their unconventional relationship (in the comics, she vanished from his life after a tragedy and returns decades later having become a member of ninja cult) and their conflict with a resurgent Yakuza who, as it turns out, were not nearly as eradicated as we'd been left to believe last season. The Hand also make an appearance (the would be the aforementioned "ninja cult") announced by Matt's enigmatic martial-arts mentor Stick (Scott Glenn), making his awaited return after his previous appearance in Daredevil season 1.

While there's plenty of action and intrigue to be found, some fans may be left frustrated by what they're still not being shown. Punisher's presence is minimized in this new trailer - and while Foggy (Elden Henson) and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) are present and appear to both have new story-arcs, they don't get much time in the trailer to make their presence felt. Also still nowhere to be seen: The Kingpin. Though not "officially" named as part of Season 2, fans are widely expecting to see Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk return in some capacity, as the overarching story looks to be borrowed largely from Frank Miller's Daredevil/Elektra comics storyline, which re-introduced the revamped version of The Kingpin (formerly a Spider-Man foe) to the Marvel Universe and made him a fixture of Daredevil's life for decades. Also AWOL are any signs of hope-for cameos by other Hell's Kitchen-based heroes, though Rosario Dawson's Marvel/Netflix series-hopping nurse Claire Temple is back.

Daredevil season 2 Elektra preview and poster

Speaking of Elektra, the trailer gives fans their first extended look at Yung (whose next film role is in Gods of Egypt) handling her action/fight sequences as the character, which all look very impressive. Of note, in keeping with the series' tendency (thus far) to downplay the costumed side of superheroic life, there's still no indication that Elektra is making use of her iconic red ninja/acrobat outfit from the comics - in fact, the closest she seems to get is a turtleneck scarf used to disguise her face in certain scenes. The first season made fans wait until the final throwdown with Fisk to see Daredevil's "proper" costume (or at least a Netflix-budget facsimile thereof) so it's possible that Elektra fans will just have to be patient - though her signature look has proved difficult to translate to live-action at least twice before.

Daredevil's season earned more than its fair share of critical acclaim, even as it deviated from the more family-friendly tone of previous installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - in the process, establishing the Netflix corner of the MCU as a place for stories that are more dark, violent, and focused on adult subject matter. The first wave of reviews for Daredevil season 2 suggest the series won't suffer from a sophomore slump either, with both Yung as Elektra and Bernthal as The Punisher being praised as superior takes on those respective Marvel Comics characters compared to previous onscreen versions. It will also be interesting to see how this season of Daredevil further builds to the eventual Defenders cross-over miniseries, ahead of the premiere of the Luke Cage Marvel/Netflix series later the year.
