Few casting choices this year have been more on point than Jon Bernthal joining Daredevil season two as Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher. Following his roles in The Walking Dead, The Wolf of Wall Street and Fury, Bernthal has established himself as an actor extremely well suited to playing quick-tempered and physically intimidating characters, and as a welcome bonus he’s a dead ringer for the comic book depictions of Frank Castle.
Daredevil is currently filming its second season, which is highly anticipated after the stellar reception that the first season received from critics and audiences alike. We’ve already had a glimpse of Bernthal in character thanks to a few candid photos of him standing around drinking coffee, but the latest set photos from Daredevil are a bit more exciting.
Sporting a short back and sides haircut, Bernthal can be seen expressing Frank Castle’s talent for violence in a new set of images published by Just Jared. The Punisher has cuts and bruises on his face, knuckles and the back of his head, and is wearing boots, jeans and a simple black shirt – an outfit reminiscent of Matt Murdock’s plain and practical vigilante costume from the first season of Daredevil. Notably, Bernthal is not sporting the Punisher’s trademark white skull on his shirt.
The collection of photos lays out the choreography of this particular part of the fight scene. The Punisher disarms a smartly-dressed man (probably some kind of henchman or gangster), and after relieving him of his gun puts the man in a tight hold, grabbing his jaw viciously. It’s unclear from these photos whether Frank kills his opponent or just puts him to sleep for a while, but the Punisher didn’t get his name by being gentle.
The fight choreography in Daredevil has been highly praised, with one standout moment of season one being a single shot sequence in which Daredevil battles wave after wave of bad guys in a hallway in an effort to rescue a kidnapped boy. This scene was particularly refreshing because, unlike most TV and movie fight scenes, it’s clear throughout that Matt Murdock is battered and exhausted – slumping against the walls in between throwing punches.
Despite ostensibly being on the same side, Daredevil and the Punisher can almost certainly be expected to experience some friction when they meet in Daredevil season two. It would be surprising if we didn’t get to see a Daredevil vs. Punisher fight scene at some point. In fact, that may even be the explanation for Frank Castle’s injuries in these photos.
Daredevil season one is currently available on Netflix. Jessica Jones premieres in fall 2015, followed by Luke Cage and Daredevil season 2 in 2016.
