According to FirstShowing.net, Daniel Craig has signed up to play 007 for not just one more, but four more James Bond movies as a follow up to the most excellent Casino Royale. I think this is fantastic news since I think Craig was the best Bond since Sean Connery.

Alex over at First Showing rates Roger Moore as his favorite Bond but I have to disagree. I haven't watched Moore's version of Bond in a long time but I don't recall him ever being in a Bond movie that didn't come across as campy. Connery's Bond movies, while straying a bit into fantasy due to the elaborate gizmos and plots, were always played straight.

I never really liked the Roger Moore James Bond movies: He actually came across as a bit of a prissy guy to me and snobbish in a high society way that turned me off.

My memory of Timothy Dalton as Bond is that he was weepy.

Many people either never heard of George Lazenby playing Bond or didn't like him in his one shot at the character, but I thought he was quite good and I liked his interpretation.

Although back in the days when he was the star of the TV series Remington Steele I thought that Pierce Brosnan would make and ideal Bond, I didn't really like his interpretation of the character. It seemed like he tried to make up for his diminutive stature by over-emphasizing the toughness of the character and it didn't work for me. I would have preferred more of a cool, suave personality from him in the role.

Finally, we have Daniel Craig. Some folks think his Bond is too rough-hewn of a character... too gritty. Personally I think he's the best Bond since Sean Connery and he evokes much of the feel that Connery brought to the role. Look back at Dr. No, Connery's first Bond film and you'll see a similar interpretation of 007. I believe that in subsequent movies that Craig will decrease the street fighter vibe of the character and move more towards the suave 007 that we know so well.

I'm jazzed that he'll be doing four more films and have the opportunity to mature in the role of James Bond: 007.
