Daniel Craig Signs for 2 More James Bond Films After ‘Skyfall’

daniel craig james bond contract Daniel Craig Signs for 2 More James Bond Films After Skyfall

Daniel Craig as a blue steel-eyed James Bond captured the spy’s cold and ruthless manner (as described by creator Ian Fleming) in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. However, absent was the swagger and dry air of sophistication that Craig’s predecessors brought to the role, in varying amounts. The character had become less a suave agent carrying out his orders for queen and country, more a morally-compromised killing machine whose disillusionment recalls Matt Damon as Jason Bourne – rather than Sean Connery as 007 going back to Dr. No.

It’s for those reasons that Craig’s run as James Bond has been heralded by some, decried by others. Earlier this year, Bond series producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson announced their interest in locking Craig down to portray 007 for the next decade (or, rather, five films) following the release of Skyfall this November. That public revelation rallied masses of Craig supporters and detractors alike – prompting arguments about just what, exactly, makes for a good screen version of the character (and whether or not Craig has it).

That was well before marketing got properly underway for Skyfall, with trailers and behind-the-scenes footage suggesting that director Sam Mendes’ promises to deliver a proper Bond movie (as he puts it, “a big fabulous escapist movie” for the 21st century) are more than just hot air. Craig remains physically-fierce and hardened in the face as ever, but his 007 appears to undergo a humbling metamorphosis in Skyfall, evolving from a glorified thug (armed with a gun and a license to kill) into a classier, but still deadly, government employee. Hence, the overall reception could be more positive for today’s announcement that Craig has worked out a deal to return as 007 for two additional films after Skyfall.

MI6 is confirming the new contract for Craig, but points out there’s a precedent for Bond actors dropping their commitment early – as happened with both Connery and Timothy Dalton. Moreover, EON Productions heads are said to have enjoyed the non-aggressive production timeline for the 23rd Bond film, resulting from a prolonged break between Quantum of Solace and Skyfall (as a result of MGM’s financial woes). That could mean the studio will be less inclined to adhere to a rigid two-year break between installments from hereon out – and, if an extended delay were to occur, it could encourage Craig to walk away prematurely after just one more Bond film.

However, there are currently no signs that EON Productions has plans to do that, seeing how it’s already gone and set screenwriters to begin developing the next two Bond films starring Craig. The actor has let it be known he does not intend to take on another role until after the new year – and the slow progress on David Fincher’s The Girl Who Played with Fire adaptation (where Craig would reprise his role as investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist) ensures the actor won’t have any other priorities demanding his attention in the foreseeable future.

Are you excited to see Craig play James Bond for (at least) two more films?

Skyfall opens in U.S. theaters on November 9th, 2012.

  1. Casino Royale was definitely one of my favorite action movies. I think he nailed it. I hope he remains Bond until he is too old to be relevant anymore.

    • “There is only so long an actor can play a character in a movie. If they stay as that character, then they had better be good.” -Me

  2. Daniel Craig would make an excellent bad guy. I’m thinking he could be Ulysses Klaw in the Black Panther movie if Marvel Studios get off of their collective duffs and get it done.

  3. This is bad news for Bond fans — IMO Craig is the worst Bond ever. He looks good with his shirt off, but the role demands far more than a tight six-pack, like humor, charisma, and charm…

    • Judging from the popularity of the movies and the consensus in most of the comments I read, you are in the very small minority. You really aren’t speaking for most Bond fans, so I think we’ll be alright.

      • Daniel Craig was absolutely amazing in Casino Royale. He elevated the movies from being silly action movies, to actually intense, interesting movies. He should remain Bond for as long as he can. Casino Royale was a fabulous movie, mostly relying on Craig’s performance. Amazing.

      • Well, the box office and reviews of Quantum of Solace were both down from Casino Royale, and with Craig in the lead, I expect that trend to continue. So maybe “most Bond fans” will be alright, but I think most everyone would agree that the recent Bond films fall far short of Dr. No, From Russia with Love, or Goldfinger.

        • Craig nailed it in both films. He’s earned his license to kill.

        • Obviously after the opening weekend for Skyfall…Your theory is off. Daniel Craig makes an excellent James Bond. I hope to see him in several more 007 movies!

    • Totally agreed.

    • DC has totally changed Bond´s credibility. The opening fight sequence in Casino Royal set the tone for his tenure, that is what it´s like to be in a real fight. So long may he reign. As for cheesey quips and overacting I´m glad they´re consigned to history under Craig. READ THE BOOKS, Craig is the only actor to get close to the original character. God bless you Buster. I think he´ll get bored of the role before ´Most Bond Fans´ get bored of him, and as for the rest of them, they can stick to watching re-runs of eye-brow raising, ridiculous skiing scenes, rubbish tailoring, space-ships eating other space-ships etc…. to their hearts content…… DC ALL the way.

  4. Craig has said himself that he wanted his Bond character to have more of what the fans have been itching for… humor and charisma, and not just a beefcake thug. It’s possible that Skyfall will finally deliver what we have been looking for.

Besides, it now has introduced Q Branch with the cool, high tech toys Bond should always have at his disposal to help fight the baddies.

Bond films are not Bourne, Die Hard, or Lethal Weapon movies (as the last two felt like), they’re epic, suave, and somewhat sophisticated adventure/spy thrillers with villains every bit a match for Bond, hot babes, and exotic locales that highlight local customs and flair.

  5. Daniel Craig makes a creditable Bond, not the greatest not the worst. As long as he’s happy playing Bond, then that’s one hurdle overcome right there.

Daniel Craig is older than I am, by a couple of weeks. I am not looking forward to waking up to a world where James Bond is played by an actor younger than me.

    • I’m only 30 but nail…..head! Daniel Craig brings the raw feel of what Ian Fleming intended!!!

  6. I personally am not happy about this news. I like Craig, but I’d like to see someone else take a go at the role. Part of the mystique to Bond, in my opinion, is that he’s played by so many different actors. When Bond ages it’s all the more difficult to accept a younger one… And I don’t know what the hell happened but it looks as if Craig aged overnight, was he a smoker when he was younger? I stand by what I’ve always said, 3 films per Bond. Period.

    • Henry Cavill next?

  7. Personally, I’m stoked.

  8. Correct me if i’m wrong, but Craig is the only actor who played Bond & earned a BAFTA nomination for it? He is the exact model of what Fleming imagined Bond to be. What holdout group of people still don’t like him? He is the best 007.

    • fleming said he loved david nevin for the role… so…. i don’t see alot of Nevin in craig. swave sofistocated “Roger moore” probably fit best what Fleming would have liked. certainly not craig.

  9. Personally, I think with Christopher Nolan having expressed an interest in directing a Bond Movie Tom Hardy would make an excellent 007. Daniel Craig just seems perpetually miserable in the role.

  10. Awsome news for Craig and for Bond fans. He is still perfect for this role and could do this with great success for many more Bond films.

  11. So I was thinking the other day, what is my favorite movie series? I thought Bourne, wait no Bond, wait not Bourne, wait a second Bourne and Bond? Holy CRAP LIGHTBULB!What if they made a flim where Matt Damon came back to be Jason Bounre and worked with Daniel Craig as Bond? If they found the right director and nailed it just right I feel like it could be on of the biggest box office hits in years. Just imagine M16 and CIA teaming up with their top secret agents and introducing Bond to tredstone pills. If you think this is an amazing idea like I do spread the word around on your youtube channels and other websites.

    • dumb. seriously bourne and bond???? Those movies have totally different styles. I hope you don’t call yourself a bond fan!

  12. HECK YESS I AM EXCITED!!!!! He’s only the best James Bond in all history!!!!

    • MI6 DOES work with the CIA already…Felix Leiter has been around since Dr. No…where in da fucx have you been?!?!?

  13. nice movie nice story line but totally lack of sex, lack of gadgets and beautiful women again. The feminist directors and producers have totally ruined the last few movies including this one trying to make their statement, like many I grew up watching james bond movies I can honestly say I don’t have the thrill and anticipation of going to watch new james bond movies anymore unlike I used to as a lad.

  14. Casino Royale and Quantum of solace were good, skyfall is quality an Craig should do many more…

  15. I am so agitated by Daniel Craig being Bond. 2 more movies? Hurry up guys, you are already insulting the concept of James Bond beyond freaking words. I wish I wouldn’t have seen that terrible excuse of a Bond movie, although the villain was good.

I really believe the world must be ending to have that pathetic of a James Bond. The character was NEVER supposed to be a jar-headed ape. The character was supposed to be a sly, ladies man who could outsmart anyone. I am so disappointed it is pathetic, but it was a good run guys, you just keep pandering to the “New World” which loves dark, serious, cold, emotionless versions of characters for some odd reason. I guess being 30, I am just out of touch.

    • Of all the Bonds, Daniel Craig is the closest to the books…

  16. Yes Im excited he is going to be in two more films. Besides Connery he is the awesomest Bond ever.

  17. i am a fan of daniel craig very happy he is making another two more bond movies and he is best bond ever and casino royale and skyfall were the best movies he made hope yu keep doing it for long time to come.

  18. The political correctness of the latter-day Bond films is the bane of its current existence. Our secret agent IS a dinosaur, precisely, who is a hedonist, smoker, drinker, and most certainly “a womanizer”. That’s precisely what Ian Fleming had created and what hard-core 007 fans expect. When Daniel Craig (an fine actor)is no longer on the producers’ radar, JB might get back to whom he was and his author/creator intended. Until then…two more films with Daniel Craig, who no doubt yearns for the former Bond ethos as we all wait in vain.

  19. Daniel Craig is of course a great actor. But i think he does not have the classic Bond look. He is more like a Timothy Dalton type than the other Bonds. A question i would like to ask and which intrigues me is ‘Are there no other younger actors to be Bond?’ Though Craig is not so old, he looks so old. I think Christian Bale will be a good choice or ………….me

  20. Every Bond has brought something different to the role, and they all were good. However, anyone who has read Ian Fleming’s books would agree that Craig is the Bond that Fleming created. He is ruthless but still charismatic. More importantly, Craig shows a vulnerability that the book Bond reveals. Skyfall was one of the best Bond movies of all time. It was a treat for anyone familiar with the Bond series as it suttely incorporated bits from the old into the new. Javier Bardem was a brilliant villian and Judi Dench was perfection! I hope Craig will be around for at least the next two movies.

  21. daniel craig is my favourite actor in bond 007

  23. For the “backstory” on James Bond as conceived by Ian Fleming, commented upon over the course of 12 novels and 6 short stories by the author, to to dreamerchant.com/blog and scroll down to James Bond, the Origin Story.

  24. Hell yes Craig was awesome in this film along with casino royale & quantum of solace, can’t wait for the next 007 film. I have watched 007 since I was a kid and can’t get enough.

  25. craig brings realism to a level that the other bonds did not. gone are the super gadgets, the swagger and the attitude. more like ian flemming wrote 007 to be like- more like a spy than a circus act. want to see craig for at least 4 more flix.

  26. Yes! I hope Daniel Craig does stay Bond for a more movies. He makes a great and very hot James Bond! ;)

  27. I think Michael Fassbender would make the perfect James Bond – see ‘Inglourious Bastards’

  28. John Kostas you beauty! I’m a fan of both, so Bond and Bourne together would be great entertainment! Spread the word baby!

  29. Great 2 more films I won’t see. He is not james bond period. He has no charisma, no charm and is about the ugliest man to walk the earth. He’s a thug who should be cast as a bond villain. He has been voted the worst bond in 3 different bond website polls. Nobody likes him. Get rid of him or kill the franchise.
