Dan Aykroyd Discusses ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Rumors & Casting

Are you ready for yet ANOTHER story involving Dan Aykroyd not only brushing off the latest rumors about Billy Murray causing trouble for Ghostbusters 3 – but also promising a fantastic screenplay for the film, which he is intent on seeing made?

Yes, Aykroyd’s been doing this Ghostbusters dance for years now, to the point where it’s really best to take anything he says about GB 3 – or any rumors concerning the belated horror-comedy threequel in general – with a bucket of salt. Today, thankfully, the comedic actor/writer isn’t so much promising that the film will be made, so much as he’s clarifying who will and won’t be involved IF it actually happens.

The last “significant” development in the ongoing saga that is Ghostbusters 3‘s attempt to claw its way out of development limbo was a report that Bill Murray shredded the screenplay after he finally read it, as a means of symbolically (and literally) denouncing the whole endeavor as worthless. Aykryod, however, claims that eyebrow-raising rumor really is just a load of hot air.

Here’s what Aykroyd offered Empire, with regards to that story about Murray’s supposed shenanigans:

“Bill Murray is not capable of such behaviour. This is simply something that would not be in his nature. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business. We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in ‘Ghostbusters 3′ has been made clear and I respect that. But Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work.”

As mentioned before, it’s probably best to assume that neither the story about Murray – nor Aykroyd’s diplomatic denial, for that matter – are entirely (if at all) accurate. Such is the current state of the Ghostbusters 3 rumor/news mill, sadly.

The original 'Ghostbusters' team

As for those rumors about Ghostbusters 3 moving ahead, without Murray being committed to reprise his role as the smart aleck scientist Peter Venkman? Aykroyd hinted to Empire that this could indeed happen, but not in the sense that Murray’s character would now be a ghost (as has long been rumored) – but, instead, by having an entirely different actor portray Dr. Venkman.

While devoted Ghostbusters fans are unlikely to be pleased by the idea of Murray being replaced – even if it does proves necessary, in order for GB 3 to actually move forward – the other issue such a casting shakeup would raise has to do with who could serve as a fitting stand-in for the 61-year-old comedic actor (in terms of both age and comedic screen presence, of course).

All the same – if there’s one thing that can be said for certain about a third Ghostbusters movie, it’s that Aykroyd and Co. will eventually have to recast the part of Venkman – or find a fairly clever way to write out the character entirely – if they want the project to actually come to fruition, seeing how Murray has made it crystal clear: he won’t give his needed blessing otherwise.

In the meantime, we will continue to keep you up-to-date on the status of Ghostbusters 3.

  1. I wish Bill would reconsider, but Dan and Harold were always the genius behind GB. If he doesn’t want to do it, they should move forward without him. I’ll still go see it.

  2. Is Anna Faris still rumored? She could play Bil Murray’s daughter if he was to be dead in the 3rd movie. Plus it would be awesome to see Slimer and Bill Murray still after him not realizing he’s a ghost

    • I am actually liking the Idea of Dr. Venkman’s kid taking over his spot on the GB team. This will add youth to the original team!

  3. The failure of GB 2 had a huge impact on Bill Murray that obviously still affects him to this day. Murray is not a fan of sequels so even though it would be great its not going to happen with Murray. Either way I hope Dan & Co can come up with a good screen play and release a great GB movie!

    • GB2 wasn’t a failure

  4. I am a massive Ghostbusters fan. Have been since childhood. I have to say, Ghostbusters without Bill Murray would be devastating. For me anyways. And I’m sure many others. Please, PLEASE, at least do a cameo. Please.

I’m sad just thinking about it.

  5. I imagine the passing the torch ting bring very predictable. The new recruits will be young and crazy not learning anything at all. Then when it’s time to save the day and the original ghostbusters are about to lose the new recruits will heroacly swoop in to save the day. Also if bill decides not to come just kill him off. Simple. I’d watch this with or without him

  6. i think people are forgetting that murray, reitman, akroyd, ramis and sony all share the rights to the franchise and nothing can move forward without the consent of all parties. the only way for murray to be recast is for murray to agree on going forward with production.

  7. I have two opinions/ideas:

    1. Replace entire cast. Either reboot or entire new crew take over and buy the bussiness from Ray and gang, they can have brief cameo parts. there are plenty of great actors that could make up new crew. If i was rebooting or just having new crew . Id have Ryan Renolds(peter), Adam Sandler(Ray) Jonah Hills (Egon)J B Smoove(Winston). They could even be the sons of the original crew? either way! thats a GB movie id kill to see!
    2. Old cast still in movie, replace Peter, again id have Ryan Renolds as the smart ass son of Peter.
I like idea 1 alot more!. But its just my opinion, and opinions are like nipples, everyones got one!

  8. I got it! The new reboot cast of Ghostbusters 3, should be… Colin Hanks as Egon. Jason biggs as Ray. Mike Damus as Peter. Lance Gross as Winston. Jay Baruchel as Louis Tully. Alyson Hannigan as Janine. It works actor that are still strong, young and smart and know and love. Just look at there piture simalarites to the characters.

  9. Will friedle as ray or jason biggs. John leguizamo as peter or as Mike Damus. Flex alexander as winston or lance gross. Alyson hannigan as janine or allison mack or maitland ward or clair forlani. Colin hanks as egon or freddie prince jr. jay baruchel as tully.

  10. Ghostbusters 3 reboot best casting choice.

  11. now you got to understand the ghostbuster franchise is still very big for old and young people. if u take all the news about GB3 everything comes in place to say there slowly making the movie ya know writing the script getting props and new equipment made with updated classic’s like the ecto 1 car. dan has said over and over that its being made on the down low secretly the buster franchise is to big to talk about it directly its just like star trek talking about something new could blew it up to early. somethings need to stay hush hush till everything’s finished even if they add all new actors with 1 or 2 originals anything new with the franchise is better then nothing wishing for a fresh start. i cant wait for this to happen because the original movies may be classic but there not really entertaining anymore. the only thing keeping it alive is the theme song the name with crossed off ghost symbol the proton packs along with ecto 1 car. the movies on the other hand are not entertaining there starting to become boring. but the idea of new characters new busters in high definition building off everything that’s keeping it alive is to big to let go altogether. with the right actors this will be a big fresh step for the ghostbusters. when the company finally signs off on it saying yes trust me all the originals including bill freaking murray will jump for it.

  12. Heresy! Curse your tongue! Ghostbusters isn’t boring, maybe you have just rewatched it waaaaaaay too many times. As to knowing what anyone in ‘Hollywood’ is going to do, no one should trust you, you are a random internet yahoo like me!

  13. What about James today and dulle hill

    • Correction James Roday

  14. James Franco, Donald Glover, Channing Tatum and Seth Rogan. Boom, done.
