The final battle between Patty Hewes and Ellen Parsons begins this summer, as Damages season 5 premieres July 11 at 9pm on DirecTV’s Audience Network (channel 239).

Damages stars Golden Globe winning actress Glenn Close as the ruthless and cutthroat lawyer Patty Hewes. Throughout the series Hewes has used unethical and even down right illegal tactics to win cases. The upcoming fifth season will consist of 10 episodes and will see the coldblooded Hewes come into major conflict with he once naïve legal protégé Ellen Parsons played by actress Rose Byrne.

But why pit Patty Hewes and Ellen Parsons against each other – and what will happen when these two legal minds face off against each other? “I think the writers want it to be Rosie [Rose Byrne] and I against each other,” says Close in a DirecTV interview.  Byrne goes on to add:

“The way the last season ends, it sort of pitches Patty and Ellen against each other. So I think the idea is they will end up on either side of the case, is my prediction. I’m really excited because we’ve never done that before, and who’s gonna win?”

Joining Close and Byrne this season will be Stop-Loss actor Ryan Phillippe as a series regular. Phillippe will play Channing McClaren, an internet genius and government whistleblower. Jenna Elfman (Dharma & Greg) will have a recurring role as an investment bank employee named Naomi Walling who is concerned by what her company is doing with insider information. Walling will be the catalyst for the case that will finally pit Patty and Ellen against one another.

Janet McTeer, John Hannah, Chris Messina, Judd Hirsch, M. Emmett Walsh, Victor Garber, William Sadler, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Gillian Alexy and Zachary Booth are all slated to guest star this season as well.

Damages has turned out to be a great success for DirecTV, after the satellite broadcaster picked up the legal thriller from its original home on FX in 2010. Praised for its red-herring style plot twists and nonlinear narrative, Damages has earned significantly positive reviews from critics as well as four Emmy awards and 19 nominations in its first four seasons. The final season is expected to deliver a shocking conclusion to the Patty-Ellen saga. Despite foreshadowing since the first season on how things might turn out, the show is known for its ability to masterfully upend a situation into something completely unexpected.
