After the rumor that Vanessa Hudgens was going to star in the upcoming Twilight sequel New Moon (which was soon thereafter labeled false), we have another rumor about the film. Still about casting and still about a female, only this time it’s… Dakota Fanning.
According to E!, the 14 year old is in talks to play Jane, a character described “as a petite blonde with a “Botticelli angel-like face…[and] crimson irises,” in a casting notice that was released earlier this month.

“Jane is a member of Italy’s Volturi, the most deadly group of bloodsucking killers in author Stephenie Meyer’s’ best-selling series,” says Yahoo Movies.
What’s perhaps most interesting about this is that it’s rumored that Fanning didn’t even have to audition for the role – she was just offered it:
“There were no auditions,” a source reveals. “They just offered it to her outright, and now they’re in negotiations. They’ve been going back and forth.”
What’s also quite interesting is that there was a petition set up by a Twilight fan proposing to Summit Entertainment that they cast Fanning in the role as she would be “perfect.” Is that just a coincidence?
Unlike the Vanessa Hudgens rumor, I think this is a great idea. Although as I said in the previous rumor post, I haven’t read any of the books and therefore am not familiar with the characters, I still think mainly from the description of the character (given above), that she suits it quite perfectly.
And Fanning is a great little actress, she’s shown in that in the past already with the likes of Man on Fire, I Am Sam and War of the Worlds that she has the talent to carry her far. She’s only 14 right now (15 next month) but give her another five to ten years and I think she could possibly be A-list.
I’m glad the Hudgens rumor was outed as bogus (thinking about that again – it really would have been a bad idea) and even if this one ends up being untrue as well it still shows the studio is turning the franchise in a better direction than they were heading.

I agree with Joe H, about wanting some new people not just people that you’ve seen how many times in movies. Except Rob, I think he was pretty great in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone. I’m looking forward to seeing who these characters will be and how well they will be in New Moon, but I am not really looking forward to the movie because out of all the books, I think New Moon is the worst because it’s so sad! I am looking forward to how Kristen will be, playing a miserable person.
Yeah. I think that some undiscovered person would do best. Btw…who did rob play in sorcerors stone? And Kristen is a good miserable person. In the Messegers, her parents didnt believe her and she was all like depressed. Maybe someone out there can give her lessons on being miserable…i know i can…
Rob was in Goblet of Fire, not Sorcerer’s Stone.
And what of Ben Barnes possibly playing Aro? Im perfectly fine with these choices, so long as we do not mix High School Musical fame in here. Because the fandom won’t be horrid enough…
@Jess, i was being VERY sarcastic. there is such a thing as hair dye, i use it monthly, dakota would be a very good jane, and wouldn’t let something so trivial as hair color get in the way.
I think Fanning is a terrible choice.
Coming in, Robert Pattinson had his name on the big screen with Harry Potter. But half of the people who loved him as Cedric Diggory, didn’t even know his name. There was no other “big” names in Twilight, and in my mind that made it a more unique, wonderful movie.
You add Fanning, and now people are just going to watch because of her. She’s going to “out-star” some of the new discoveries that Summit has been making, and that’s a huge disappointment. Others should have a chance to make their breaks, without having to compete with someone who’s already considered a big name.
On the note of the actual casting, I don’t think she makes an adequate Jane. Jane was always envisioned, in my mind and that of my Twilight obsessed friends, as a very young but powerful vampire. Fanning is far too old, or is groomed to look far too old, for that role.
These are my personal opinions, yes, but I know they’re shared by others. I don’t disagree that Fanning is a wonderfully talented actress. I just disagree with her casting in New Moon.

I personally think that Dakota Fanning is a great choice. She’s a terrific actress and i really don’t think anyone should worry about whether or not her appearance would suit the character because it should not be forgotten the amount of actors who have successfully portrayed their characters who are far younger than their actual age. For instance Tobey Maguire in Spiderman, Ashley Tisdale in HSM and Suite Life, Raven Simone in that’s so raven, Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt in Curious case of BB, and not to state the obvious Rob Pattinson. In the gist of things, make-up,costume and camera work wonders together and so there is really no reason to worry about whether or not she can pull off the look. Take Cam Gigandet
(James) in the book James hair was cropped short but in the film they made it long and it suited the whole persona of the character really well, so maybe they may adapt a look for Dakota that would also suit who Jane is. All there really is to be concerned about is the acting, and what we’ve seen so far from Dakota there really isn’t anything to worry about. It will be interesting to see. However it must be said Alexis Bledel was better suited for Bella thats just my opinion, oh and Elizabeth Reaser (Esme) should have kept her hair dark brown like she was in Grey’s Anatomy (Rebecca/Ava).

she has been able to pull off any role that has been given to her. and i know that she can be the angelic b*chy little Jane… so hey might as well just give her the dang role!!
I love dakota she’s gonna be the next A-list stars out there. omg just anyone please do not take vanessa hudgens, geez of all the people! Besides, Vanessa is too girly, obviously, can’t act either, seems pretty pathetic if you ask me, and who can imagine her playing the part of a VAMPIRE? Luckily, the rumor is not true..alleluia…
