With Spartacus drawing to a close last Friday and Boss getting the axe back in November, Starz’ original programming lineup was starting to look a little thin.

Luckily for them, last week’s premiere episode of David Goyer’s Da Vinci’s Demons pulled in record numbers for the network (2.14 million viewers over the course of the premiere weekend), prompting the cable network to renew the series for a season 2.

Loosely based on the life of famed inventor Leonardo Da Vinci, the fantasy/historical drama should return to Wales to film the BBC Worldwide co-production in May, with season 2 slated to air in 2014. Considering only the premiere episode has aired so far, we still have nearly all of season 1 to decide if this renewal is a good or bad decision.

Da Vinci’s Demons is actually the latest show to get the rapid renewal treatment from Starz, with both Boss and Magic City receiving the word that they would outlast their first season before they debuted – a commitment that is in lock-step with the network’s “pilot process,” according to Starz CEO Chris Albrecht, who spoke with THR back in January:

“We’re already writing a lot of the stuff for season two. If you want to be on a 12-month cycle, you have to keep going; these shows are too hard and too big to wait and do a traditional broadcast network model. There’s a reason why broadcast network shows are broadcast network shows – because they stay on that model. The reason why premium television are the basic tier channels doing the good stuff, they have a little bit of a different formula.

“I look at the Starz pilot process as one or two seasons and we take it from there, although if we start to apply a lot more of our own cash flow to originals, then maybe we’ll do some pilots. There are some shows that would sure benefit from doing the pilots; there are pilots for a reason.”

While some of the behind the scenes legwork for season 2 of Da Vinci’s Demons may have already begun, much more likely remains. To help with the writing, Goyer is bringing on comic book scribes Jonathan Hickman (The Avengers, The Manhattan Projects) and Matt Fraction (Fantastic FourHawkeye) for two episodes. Incidentally, in 2010, Hickman wrote the Marvel book S.H.I.E.L.D., which was about the “secret history” of both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Leonardo da Vinci.

Here’s Goyer – who has his own experience with comic book characters from his work on Blade, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and Man of Steel - on bringing Hickman and Fraction onboard:

“One of the best parts of this job is that you occasionally get to call up people you admire out of the blue and ask them if they want to play in your sandbox. Sometimes, they say ‘yes’. So… I managed to convince Starz and the powers that be to hire Matt and Jonathan on to write two episodes of season 2 with our trusty staff. In case you don’t know who Hickman and Fraction are – they are comic gods in the indie and Marvel world.”

Da Vinci’s Demons will mark the TV writing debut for both Hickman and Fraction, but to a degree, writing is writing and other comic writers like Geoff Johns (Arrow) and Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, Under the Dome) have nailed the transition.

Besides that, both The Manhattan Projects and Hawkeye just nabbed Eisner Award nominations for Best Continuing Comic Series, so it’s clear that Goyer is reaching for the best when it comes to his staff – and that’s a good thing.

Da Vinci’s Demons airs on Fridays @9PM on Starz.

  1. which was about the “secret history” of both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Leonardo da Vinci.

  2. Season 2!?? this show will be lucky to have 1 million viewers come episode 3, shocking acting, script and one of the most un-likeable characters on TV! Cancel ASAP and get working on a Spartacus spin off for Julius Caesar.

      • This is the best show.. They should renew it ASAP

      • I definitely must agree with Purge. This show carries you away in history and tells a story of (maybe) the greatest mind of history. The effects created to show Da Vinci thinking and constructing ingenious plans are amazing. It may be somewhat volatile and erratic sometimes, but I cannot wait until season 2 airs.

      • Spartacus Blood and Sand was the best when Andy Whitfield played there.
After that the Spartacus series still was good to watch only because of the story and the other character’s also this shows the life of Spartacus in some way’s.
But in both cases Spartacus,Da Vinci are cool film series to watch.

        • I agree. Both series have been great. I loved Spartacus from the start and was very sad when it was over, but then they had Da Vinci and I love it too. It is very interesting to see how he invented all of the things he did and to take even a glimps into his mind. I hope they renew it for sure. I can’t wait to see the next season.

      • I agree, I love Da Vinci’s Demons, Cant Wait for it to come back on.

    • Delighted it has much more than 2 million and is growing all the time. Great show. Love the mystery and the acting and cannot wait for the second season.

    • @Kidd61
This show is my favourite show as of the day I watched the first episode. They should focus more on this than lousy Spartacus. I’ve watched the whole season 1 and I can’t wait untill season 2 is released. Although according to this site it might be out 2014…Damn!

    • lol do not listen to this guy. Perhaps I should say boy. he can’t even spell kid correctly. This guy doesnt see the whole picture of Da Vinci’s Demons

    • Kidd61 go watch farticus and shut up

  3. So let me get this straight. Starz cancelled Camelot after 1 season, cancelled Boss after 2 but after ONE episode renews this garbage?

    What a joke.

  4. What a load of rubbish. The pilot was horrible. The only reason why people tuned in was to see if it lived up to the hype and it didn’t. It fell flat and I don’t see the ratings being even close to half of what Spartacus had

  5. Although I heard lots of excellent criticism I have to say that it could be better. Some scenes are just over-dramatically stressed and as a viewer you feel awkward watching them. I have to admit that I do like this re-invented storyline about Da Vinci,I studied his life and work for years and the ideas they showed up with are refreshing and good.
The story itself in each episode seems a little volatile and erratic.

All in all I do have to say that I like Da Vinci’s Demons, even if it’s not going to be one of my favorites ;)

  6. I think the show is fantastic. While the first episode wasn’t exactly a hook the viewer episode, the show gets better every week. The acting is good. da Vinci is awesome. Would you judge a book on the first few pages? Starz commits to their shows. Gives the writers a chance to tell their stories, which is bold and I’m a fan. Most networks rush to cancel great shows because numbers weren’t what was expected. More should be like Starz in my opinion.

    • I agree with Chris. This new starz series is worthy of watching. Love Chris’ book analogy.

  7. I LOVE this show and am so glad that there will be a second season. Hopefully there will be many more to come after that.

  8. I have to say that I’m not a big fan of series based on history.
Well, I used to be! Da Vinci’s Demons blew me away. It gets better from episode to episode and (what I never expected) I am so glad that they are shooting a second season.
As Johanna said, some scenes are a little uncomfortably long and too dramatic, but then the next scenes are so brilliant that you quickly forget it.
I’m very excited about the next seasons story and how they want it to continue.

  11. disappoint final why ???

    • How can you be disappointed in the ending? A sword fight in the Cathedral: the Patsey plot; clues to the scheming of the Vatican and double cross by Lucretia! The thing about the Book of Leves came up again and he is on his way to Constantinople: which actually should have been called Istanbul at this time: but decides he has to save Florence after all. We are left on a knife edge (although the historical Lorenzo and Leonardo survive) and we still do not know who is who with many of the darker characters and their secrets. Guiliano being killed was historically true, but it still came as a shock, especially as the series had us thinking he had already been killed. The whole episode was fast paced and exiting. Just what was disappointing: the cliff-hanger or that they did not twist history to kill off the Medici? Please state what you were disappointed about.

      • Kostantiniyye was the name of Constantinople during the Ottoman rule of the city and it changed to Istanbul at the establishment of the Turkish Republic at 1920s’,just so u know

  12. I love it! Im stoked second season is in the works!

  13. I think the show is fantastic. While on it’s first episode I wasn’t exactly a hooked, the show gets better with every episode. The acting is good. I LOVE this show and am so glad that there will be a second season, Da Vinci is awesome and sexy. Would you judge a book on the first few pages? Starz commits to their shows. Gives the writers a chance to tell their stories, which is bold and I’m a fan. Most networks rush to cancel great shows because numbers weren’t what was expected and specially when you right into the series. More should be like Starz in my opinion. Can’t wait for season 2 first episode…..

  14. My family is hooked, can’t wait for season two. I’m no expert on the in’s and outs of acting/film making and writing, I do love a good series. Please keep it going, I need the entertainment.

  15. DA VINCI’S DEMONS IS AWESOME. just the show i was looking for smart well written… nooo Guilliano.. but please dont cancel this show. reality tv sucks if i wanna see problems and fights i could just walk outside. SO KEEP DA VINCI DEMONS ON

  16. I should think it would be renewed. Fancy leaving us on a knife edge and then cancelling as so many other series have. Of course we all know that Lorenzo will survive and Da Vinci will as well and live for several more years as he is at the start of his long career: that saw him sculpt David for Florence; paint many magnificent murals and paintings: the Last Supper being his most famous; and he will work as a war engineer for Cesere Borgia and the Duke of Milan. But what has fate and the Book of Leaves in store for him? Is he going to end up in Constantinople and did Lucrezia survive? There are many mysteris as to what the writers will invent for the next season: but glad it is coming back. Cheers!

  17. I can not wait one year for watching season 2. This is the best tv show ever, don’t acting like a morons!!! Please continue!

  18. I waited until the season was over to watch it, I was intrigued by the trailers, but my life keeps me from watching it as it airs. I was instantly hooked after the first episode and definitely became thoroughly upset by the way it ended. If there is to be a season 2, then it should air and not confuse the minds of everyone that wants it and break our hopes with rumors that it won’t air. Da Vinci is one of the greatest minds of our History, this show brings out the best in him, especially since Florence and Rome had their dark times.

  19. What!! I have to wait until 2014 for season 2!?!?
I fell in love with this show, I’m hooked and want more ASAP!!
I’m not a big fan of Tv overall, but I will faithfully be waiting and watching Da Vinci’s Demons.

  20. I Just can´t wait anymore! Give me the Season 2!

  21. where is season 2 come on horry up plz

  22. after watching the davinci code, angel and demon i knew there was goin to be a super series coming up,cant wait for season2,2014 is too far

  23. I never vote on anything but I would have to say I will this time Da Vinci’s Demons Must continue…It has my families full attention…

  24. Best show since breaking bad. If not, better. Breaking bad was just a sketch of a bunch of sketchy ordeals. This, Is thought out.

  25. Very fragile series.. Could easily be ruined.. As long as they keep us guessing and not criticizing, then I think everything will be o.k. I hope to see more big role goal playing rather than working up to a single quest in bfe south America with Indians. Seems like it would drag or end too quickly. Maybe they will add on after. Who knows. I hope he finds himself in the desert. Don’t know why either. Cheerio.

  26. If he loses the key my heart would be sank….

  27. WHEN he loses the key my heart will be sank….
