A recent mod for Cyberpunk 2077 allows players to explore Night City in virtual reality. This release has been highly anticipated by fans since the news broke that modder Luke Ross was developing a Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod.

While calling Cyberpunk 2077's launch messy would be a massive understatement, the grimy sci-fi action RPG has seen something of a redemption arc over the past year. For a game that was once plagued with at-times fatal glitches and abysmal performance, particularly on consoles, it has managed to regain some trust from the gaming community thanks to a slew of massive updates and improvements. The recent 1.5 update was the most substantial yet, adding tons of new content alongside the long-awaited next-gen upgrade. In the meantime between the game's release and these major patches, players on PC found ways to improve and expand upon the vanilla game by way of mods. Some of these mods offered basic bug fixes or visual enhancements while others, like the Cyberpunk 2077 car customization mod, offered meatier changes and additions.

One of the latest high-profile mods, however, comes in the form of Luke Ross's VR expansion. As reported by Eurogamerthis mod can be accessed by becoming a member of Ross's Patreon and currently features advanced head-tracking, though complete motion controls have yet to be added. It should also be noted that the VR experience appears to require a suped-up PC to run smoothly. Eurogamer's Ian Higton stated that he ran the mod on a system with an RTX 3070 and still experienced some framerate issues.

Cyberpunk 2077 Transmog Leak

The mod might have some kinks that need to be worked out on the performance and stability side of things, but it is still an impressive and respectable outing - especially for an independent programmer. There are several mods that improve Cyberpunk 2077 by making it more immersive and deep, but nothing can compare to the prospect of seeing Night City first-hand through a VR headset. It looks like that is what Ross ultimately aims to do with this ambitious endeavor, so hopefully, it will continue to be built upon and stabilized.

As VR becomes more commonplace and accessible in gaming, it's likely that more releases will have some sort of VR compatibility down the road. Cyberpunk 2077  is still getting ironed out from the standpoint of traditional gaming, so it probably won't get an official CD Projekt Red VR version. However, if Luke Ross's mod works as well as it looks, maybe CDPR won't need to make one.
