smallville season 9 CW Renews Smallville For A Tenth Season

A couple weeks ago, The CW announced a list of shows that will be returning next fall, but, for some reason, Smallville wasn’t included in the list.  This exclusion had loyal long-time fans worried that things may not be going so well with their favorite series. Well, fans need no longer worry because just a bit ago The CW just gave word that Smallville has been renewed for a tenth season.

That’s right, I said tenth. Not tenth and final. When asked about whether or not the tenth will be its last, I was told that they “can confirm it is picked up for a tenth season, but that’s it right now.” I supposed Warner Bros. and The CW are keeping things open in regards to what the future holds for everyone’s favorite – non-flying – superhero.

“SMALLVILLE”

TO RETURN FOR A TENTH SEASON

ON THE CW

March 4, 2010 (Burbank, California) ─ The CW Network has announced that its hit series “Smallville” will return in the fall of 2010 for a momentous tenth season.

“Smallville,” a modern retelling of the Superman legend, stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent.  The series moved to Friday nights this season, where it currently ranks as network television’s #1 show in its time period among men 18-34 and men 18-49.   Additionally, “Smallville” has dramatically improved The CW’s ratings performance in its Friday 8:00-9:00p.m.time period by 67% among adults 18-34 (1.5/6), 200% in men 18-34 (1.8/7), 75% in adults 18-49 (1.4/5), 183% in men 18-49 (1.7/6) and 74% in total viewers (3.12million).

“Smallville” joins the five previously announced series – “The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” “Supernatural” and “America’s Next Top Model” – which will all return for another season on The CW.

“Smallville” was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (“Shanghai Noon,” “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”), based on the DC Comics characters.  Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson serve as executive producers, along with James Marshall, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola.  The series is produced by Tollin/Robbins Productions, Millar/Gough Ink and Warner Bros. Television.  SUPERMAN was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

While I’m in a Smallville mood, let’s check out what we can expect when the show returns on April 2.

Looks like Metallo is back and Zod is done play nice. If Zod starts gathering his arm and Metallo is out for vengeance, what is Clark going to do? Fly? C’mon… you should know by now that’s not going to happen.

What do you think about Smallville getting a tenth season? Are you excited? Do you think the shows been on long enough? Anyone taking bets on whether or not we’ll see some actual flying? Is Lex coming back?

Don’t miss the return of Smallville Friday, April 2 @8PM on The CW

  1. WOOHOOHOO! Very exciting and I have a feeling that the writers will plan on making it the final one.

  2. This is great news! This season isn't right yet to make it the final season, the show will have to go out with a bang and this is what will be done in the series finale. I do think he will learn how to fly by the last episode of the season which is titled “Salvation.” It'll just make the 10th season more interesting. Especially since Zod can fly, then it's only a matter of time until Clark learns too! How cool will that be? Clark and Zod fighting in the sky!!! I just hope he changes his costume during that time to something somewhere closer to the traditional suit! At least bring in the red, blue and gold! I'm uber-excited! lol

  4. SWEEEETTT!!!!!

I am however sick of him not flying!!!

  5. I'm grateful that its going to be on another season. I have loved every Season, as most don't. I have patience of him flying. I just want the writers to do it right and not move ahead of themselves. Heres to S10 Smallville

  6. This is awesome news. Like a lot of fans I found the show to be lagging for a few seasons, but I faithfully stuck with it and was rewarded with the incredible season eight and so far the awesome season nine. Keep going Smallville!

  7. I have completely lost interest in Smallville. For some reason they cant afford descent lighting to film the show with and it makes it VERY difficult to see what is going on. Sorry CW this is my last season of Smallville!

  8. So, what is the plan?
    TWELVE seasons?

  9. imo smallvile has only been active for the last 2 maybe 3 seasons, all the season before that have been pretty weak.
im hoping this season has as such action as the last, if not more.

  10. I'm just wondering when this show will get out of the soap opera acting. I'm at my last nerve with how every contrary statment makes the nearby character look pensive. hmm i never thought of that very obvious point.
Now i know why i hate superman. batman always called him “the boy scout”, and he was right. But there is a limit. Smallville takes the boy scout theme to a whole new level. clark is so damn annoying that i found myself fast fowarding to the green arrow parts because at least something was happening there.

  11. Love Lex Luthor to come back to the show! Also more of Zatanna! I got a crush on her; but don't tell my wife please!

  12. Best. News. Ever!!!!!!!!!

Although Allison Mack isnt definitely coming back, so does that mean Chloe wont be making it out alive this season.

Having Lex back next season is a must, and finally having Clark fly really needs to happen. The whole point of no flights, no tights was that WB/DC didnt want it to infringe on a movie version. That isnt happening for a few years at least, so let him fly, and put in him in the suit for the very last episode. Season 10 should be the last one though.

  13. This is the best news of he days for me because whole of the team is doing well during all the season all the way long and we were missing them and wanted them to come up with another new season any how. I knew it that their fans and loved viewers will definitely force them to come back. There are rumors going around that they're negotiating with Michael Rosenbaum to return as Lex Luthor for nine or 10 episodes.

  14. First off I have to say that last season was a MONUMENTAL DISASTER and I really thought that the show was done but this season has turned out to be fantastic IMO. I do see a 10th season evolving pretty much because there are a lot of loose ends they need to tie up.
-we need a last encouter with Lana
-we need to see him fly
-we need to see him create the suit
-We POSITEVLY NEED Lex to come back. This is a must, the show CANNOT end without him. Give michael Rosenbaum everything you can give him financially and get him back.
    -Chloe has to die.
-We need some more progress with the Justice league
-A new Dr. fate must rise
-We need an episode tying in Clark's past; i.e. going more in depth about how he became who he is (seasons 1-5) and elaborating on Jonathan kent and his influence on him. Since his father died he really has not been mentioned. They need to end the show with Clark having remembered ihs father in some way an dthe impact he has had on his life.
-the checkmate side story needs to be elaborated.
    -Lois and Clark?
    -Green Arrow spinoff/ JLA spinoff?

  15. We do not need a half ass Superman. Smallville does a grave injustice to the Superman legend. A leather coat as a superhero costume? And what the heck does the “S” on Clark's black shirt stand for. That “S” has been quite ubiquitous throughout the series, but no one has ever said, to my knowledge, what it stands for. Certainly not the Superman we know and love. One might be more forgiving if the story lines were logical and interesting, but most of them have more holes in them than Bonnie and Clyde.

Either make Clark Kent Superman or quit while you're ahead. Just because the ratings apparently justify the uncreative and desparate attempt to keep this series alive and producing revenue, there is no honor when you replace respect for a concept with greed.

  16. the S is a kryptonian symbol that i have seen clark with.. there was something that looked like a thick dog tag or a key fob that had the Kryptonian symbol on it.. others seemed to have this symbol as well i assumed that it was something that represented krypton itself OR clarks was different and it was the crest of the house of JOR-EL. not sure but there have been allusions to the “S”. i just assume that in this universe, they will see his costume with the “S” on it and assume it stands for SUPER as clark wouldnt want to broadcast the whole alien aspect of his life.

  17. Uh, on several ocassions Clark has explained that the S on his chest is there because it is his family crest and wearing it with pride is something he feels like he should be doing.

And Smallvile is, and never was meant to be, a direct copy of the Superman legend, it is a reinterpretation doing the very best it can considering WB/DC have catergorically told the producers in the past that Clark cannot wear the suit or fly.

  18. I agree with many of your points, bar these two;

Clark doesnt need to create his red and blue costume Martha does.

And for the love of everything that is holy in the world, NO MORE LANA. That story is finished! Bringing her back in any capacity is a massive backwards step for a show that is really going in leaps and bounds.

  19. Mega kryptonian dittos on that one!

  20. You know, I find myself agreeing with you more and more these days and it's beginning to bother me. Please stop it. LOL!

  21. I used to love Superman. Smallville has made me hate him.

The new producers for the last two years took the show in a completely different direction. Some love it, I hate it. I think he's a jerk, the stories are very contrived, I can't stand Lois and they destroyed the best secondary character (Chloe). The show sorely misses Lex and Ma Kent.

I'm not surprised they didn't announced 10th and final. These guys will milk this cow as long as people keep tuning in.

  22. will there be a time when he gets his suit? that will the question.

  23. Thanks for the excellent news on Smallville getting a 10th season. I started watching midway through the 8th season & only because I caught the end of a couple of episodes while I was waiting on SUPERNATURAL. I'm a 38yr.old college grad WASP; I don't know how I had never seen the show before but I now I own every season and have watched each of them at least twice. BTW, I've never been a fan of Superman and never read a comic, but Smallville is now my fav tv series of all time, movies included.

  24. Which leads me to the questtion: If you can't do it right, why do it at all?
The way it stands now, Smallville is pure plagiarism. Better they should have done this concept with completely different characters and locales. Then it could have been accepted on its own instead of being a hybrid. Taking someone else's concept, deleting the best parts of it and substituing confusion just demonstrates a lack of true creativity.

  25. Deleting the best parts of it? Smallville has given us more of the genuine Superman mythology than any other medium ( bar comics of course), to say it is plagiarism is crazy. Both movies and comic books especially thrive on alternate versions and mirror universes. Why can't Smallville simply exist as a new take on Superman? Surely if it was completely the same every time it wouldnt be worth telling any stories about the character!

  26. As much as I agree about Clark and Zod duelling mid air, I doubt the budget can handle it. I recall they wanted to do something similar in season 6 with the Lex/Zod and Clark, but as they couldnt afford it back then, and now the budget is way smaller.

  29. Why Not!?!?!

This is very joyous news. The last time heard news this good we all started singing “Ding dong the witch is dead…”
