It’s been over seven decades since the character of Curious George first appeared in the book by Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey. Over the years there have been many books featuring the popular primate, as well as films, TV shows, video games and even theme park attractions.
The most recent big-screen incarnation of Curious George was in 2006 when Universal released a film which had Will Ferrell voicing the “Man with the Yellow Hat” and which grossed less than $70 million worldwide (read: not a huge success). Just last year, a direct-to-DVD sequel was released called Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey!
However, those looking for more of that Curious little monkey won’t have to wait too much longer, as a new big-screen version of the character is now on the way.
24 Frames reports that Illumination Entertainment – who recently had massive critical and financial success with Despicable Me – are developing Curious George in hopes that it will click with audiences in ways that the 2006 film – for some reason – failed to.
Although is too early to be certain, as far as we can see at this point the story of Curious George won’t be altered. It’s about a monkey called George, “who’s taken out of the jungle by an eccentric explorer to live in the city, where mischief always seems to find him.”
The script for the new Curious George will be written by Larry Stuckey, who wrote the upcoming Little Fockers, the third film in the successful Meet the Parents/Meet the Fockers series. That’s not exactly something to boast about and certainly not encouraging for those wanting a quality Curious George flick (yes, even an animated monkey deserves a quality motion picture ).
Curious George isn’t the only animated feature based on a well-known character that Illumination is working on: it also has Where’s Waldo? and Dr Seuss’ the Lorax in development. Unsurprisingly, the studio also has a sequel to Despicable Me on the way. Of those I personally am most interested in how they translate Waldo to the big-screen.
Although the 2006 Curious George didn’t connect with audiences (despite boasting the name Will Ferrell above the title), I think this new version will do better. If nothing else, using the marketing term “From the makers of Despicable Me” should be enough to get audiences interested.
