I’m speculating as well, but Cruise’s comments could mean that he sees the potential for the movie but doesn’t think he’s right for the role. Part of being successful in Hollyweird is knowing when not to accept jobs. Can you imagine Christopher Walken playing Han Solo, O.J. Simpson playing The Terminator or Ryan O’Neal playing Rocky? Some people weren’t meant to play certain parts. (You think I made those comparisons up? Not.)

Sounds like: “If I get my way, I will do it.” I think he wanted more control over the movie. If he’s as knowledgable on Iron Man as half of Iron Fandom is, he would get my vote… once he proves his knowledge.

I did warm up to the idea of Cruise as Tony Stark, but in lieu of these comments, I am not sorry he is not a part of it.

Just my opinion, and one I happen to agree with. :D

I could live happily if Tom Cruise was NEVER in another SciFi movie.
