CBS Will Debut ‘Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior’ Directly After ‘Criminal Minds’

CBS is pulling an NCIS with Criminal Minds. According to the network’s recently released schedule, CBS will debut the new spinoff show Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior on February 16th at 10:00 PM, directly after Criminal Minds. CBS found great success with this same strategy with the debut of the NCIS spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles.

The strategy makes perfect sense, as fans of the original Criminal Minds will likely also enjoy the spin-off show. Interestingly, CBS already debuted the Suspect Behavior cast in a Season Five episode of Criminal Minds (this is known as a backdoor pilot in the TV industry). Presumably, the early crossover appearance, along with the fact that the show is following the original Criminal Minds, will make it more appealing to viewers and get Suspect Behavior started on the right foot.

Considering that Criminal Minds has been on the air for six seasons, a pretty great run in the fickle world of network TV, it’s not a surprise to see the show premiering a spinoff. If there’s one thing networks like, it’s cashing in on a good franchise. Take Law & Order for example. Over the course of that show’s 20-year run, NBC churned out four different spinoffs.

The question is, will Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior be like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (a successful spinoff that surpassed the popularity of the original) or Law & Order: Trial by Jury (which only lasted one season).

Based on the quality cast, which includes Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker and Janeane Garofalo, there is a strong chance that Suspect Behavior will find success. A great cast is no guarantee of success, of course, especially in network TV where the week-to-week writing is the most important part of the show.

Again, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior will debut on Wednesday, February 16th at 10:00 PM following Criminal Minds at 9:00 PM. Feel free to share your thoughts on Suspect Behavior‘s potential for success or failure in the comments.

  1. Watched criminal minds tonight and thought what a great episode & then got thinking they showed way more of the outside cast than usual and what a good idea it would be to have a spinoff. Decided to look up and to my surprise they are. Can’t wait for the new shows.

  2. About friggin time, I thought this spinoff was going to start at the beginning of this last season. Been looking forward to it.

  3. Great News. “Criminal Minds” is one of my favourite tv shows and for me spinoff show is a perfect desicion.
    Good luck on the show.

  4. As a long time viewer of Criminal Minds I was excited for this debut until..I saw that it stars Janeane Garofalo. Usually I do not “ban” a star or show based on their personal politics or opinions, Janeane however is the exception. The things she said and continues to say about anyone that is conservative or in any way disagrees with President Obama or his administrations policies, are just vile. She has said repeatedly, to anyone that will listen that we are a “bunch of redneck, stupid racists, straight up”. That I believe was the nicest thing she had to say. She is entitled to her opinion and I for one am entitled to skip what I am sure will be an otherwise great show.

    • I agree. I despise that woman for all the hate and turmoil she spews. I will not watch this show because of her, which is sad cause I really like Forest Wittaker. My disgust for JR totally trumps all. Plus, this first shows first 15 min had her spewing her racist soap box again. I just laughed and turned it off. How did she even get a part?

      • I am in 100% agreement with you. I can’t stand her and will not watch her which is too bad because I really like the other actors. When she goes I will watch it, otherwise I will stick with Law and Order!!

    • Garofalo acts like a street broad in this series. I won’t watch it again.

  5. I was watching the show and wondered what Forrest Whitaker was doing on there. I was pleased to find that this wonderful actor is back doing what he does best.

    • I hope Forrest is in shape for this movie. He looked good in “Repo” and would pull of a better Cop look than his normal chubby appearance.

  6. I love Criminal Minds!!!! I don’t really like the idea for the spin off though. i am not saying that it wont be a good show or that it doesnt have a good casting, but most spinoffs are more popular than the original show itself and i really dont want that to happen. it kinda seems like the new cast is bargeing in a little.:[

  7. Love Criminal Minds, however the cast for the spinoff was weak last year and can’t imagine this new version being any better. (Actually I thought it was the worst episode) Whitaker is a good actor; however, he is far from Mantegna or any of the other guys on CM. In the past I’d record one show and watch another during that time slot… now…I’ll just watch SVU, if that is the time slot that it remains. As far CM goes…I’m disappointed with them doing away with the Cook and now Brewster. After all if it isn’t broken; why fix it. Keep what is good, bring back the gals and then worry about a new version, with a different cast.

  8. I am disappointed to learn of the spinoff. I think the regular cast on the real show is phenomenal, and I don’t understand what CBS is doing. I will certainly not be watching this show.

  9. I don’t know if it’s worth or not to watch, but there is nothing wrong if i try the pilot episode. But i think it’s will be a great show

  10. Will there still be more seasons of the regular Criminal Minds? I would hate to see it go…

  11. will not watch a show with Janeane Garofalo period!!!!!!!!!

  12. I too was happy to see a new Criminal Minds. Forest Whittaker is such a good actor and director. This show has one problem and that is Janeane Garofalo. She is a vile person and when I saw she was on the show I changed the chanel. If she wants to spew her venum than she must pay the consequences.

  13. I love Criminal Minds, but when I saw this spinoff, I was really disappointed. This new series is just not up to par. It does not seem as intelligent and cutting edge as Criminal Minds, the original series. I hope the more I watch it the more I will like it, but so far I am not impressed.

  14. CBS you have the best the new ciminal minds suspect is awson and forest is wonderful I think his is the best yet for him I have seen all his movies and this is the greatest yet thank you for keeping me liking tv now

  15. What the heck were you thinking with the new Criminal Minds Suspect Behavior? Garofalo acts like she just got out of a street gang. A few men look neat. The rest need a shave. So this is the new FBI team? I’ve been watching Criminal Minds for years along with lots of friends and family, but this is terrible. No one I know would watch it again. SVU is against it and that will be our choice.
