‘Criminal Minds’ Season 7 Premiere Preview: Prentiss Returns

What do you think of the premiere? ‘Criminal Minds’ Season 7 Premiere Review & Discussion

When Criminal Minds returns this fall for its seventh season, fans can rest easy knowing that familiar faces will be returning for good. After the continuous ousting of female cast members last year, the favored members of the BAU will be officially reunited in the Criminal Minds season 7 premiere.

The episode, entitled “It Takes A Village”, will mark the official return of Paget Brewster (as Emily Prentiss) to the Criminal Minds family. Of course, since the rest of her BAU team believes that she’s dead, there’s a certain amount of explanation that needs to occur.

Unfortunately, the return of Prentiss from the proverbial grave isn’t something that can simply stay within the confines of the FBI. Considering Hotchner was responsible for faking Prentiss’ death and providing her with a somewhat new life abroad, a Senate Committee is extremely interested in knowing why all of this occurred, and why she’s now returning.

For those unfamiliar with the Criminal Minds cast shake-up that occurred during the sixth season, allow me to fill you in. For some reason (likely to cut costs and move the series into a different direction), “the powers that be” initially decided that AJ Cook (as JJ Jareau) was no longer needed in the series. On top of that, it was also decided that Paget Brewster’s role would be cut down significantly.

Almost a year after the role reduction for Brewster was announced – and following the departure of AJ Cook from the series – it was revealed that Brewster would also be leaving the series. As a reunion of sorts, AJ Cook returned to Criminal Minds for Brewster’s final episode, and the producers made sure that Brewster’s character arc allowed for her to possibly return.

While all of this was occurring, both fans of the series and cast members still on the series were appropriately upset (read what series star Kirsten Vangsness said to us about this situation).  With Cook and Brewster being replaced by a new female character, Ashley Seaver (Rachel Nichols), some stability was restored to the hit CBS series – though fans were still wondering when/if their favorite characters would return.

As Criminal Minds season 6 came to a close, a cliffhanger hinted that Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) may not return. In real life, Gibson was in the middle of contract renegotiations (he was highly underpaid in regards to the ratings that the series was receiving and his position on the show). With Gibson willing to walk away from Criminal Minds, a flurry of decisions were made: Rachel Nichols was let go from the series, executive producer (and showrunner) Ed Bernero left Criminal Minds, AJ Cook and Paget Brewster were rehired, and Thomas Gibson renewed his contract.

With all that craziness over, we are now a month away from the Criminal Minds season 7 premiere, and things have somewhat returned to normal. Even though the loss of Bernero from the series will certainly be felt, Criminal Minds still retains a great team of writers and producers that know how to make the series work as successfully as it has in the past.

While it’s hard to tell exactly how things will play out in the upcoming season, the return of AJ Cook and Paget Brewster is certainly a step in the right direction.

  1. I never seen Prentis as that important to the team and until she was ready to leave her role wasn’t that dynamic. It’s been a long time since I saw the first season, but I think the woman she replaced was a bit more dynamic to the show then she has been….Maybe they just didn’t want much focus her way, but she sure will get it coming back I bet

  2. Matthew Gray Gubler. What HAVE you done to your hair now?

    • Eh, lets just hope he stops carrying his revolver in the front of his pants. Nobody who carries a piece puts it in the front like that. Can’t easily draw and can’t conceal it easily. They’ve got to stop making him look like nerd prototype…tone it down a bit

      • I believe that was addressed in the episode when the team was in Montana and they visited a guys house and he made fun of Reese and the way he carried his gun.

  3. I can not wait until season 7. I am so glad that AJ Cook and Paget Brewster are coming back. The show was never the same without them.

    • You have hit the nail on the head for millions of us viewers.
Hail the key players, especially Gibson, reunited.
They are the best show and team on
      TV.
Glad to see the company executives finally get it.
It is the Team more than the writers and producers that have made this a success.
Hope you now leave it as it is for many seasons.
If you do we will be here watching.

  4. who gives a crude about prentiss. JJ is back!

  5. Sanity prevails. I honestly couldn’t imagine myself watching this season without Prentiss or JJ.

  6. So glad both r coming back
When JJ left I was crying so hard
When Emily left it wasn’t that powerful effect cause when I first got into it that was the first episode I watched , now it just makes me sad that they left , BOTH girls in SAME season !
Even though we didn’t give rachael a chance I need to see my BAU Family back together !

  7. I would just like to point out that Prentiss has been more important to Crinminal Minds then Ziva has been for NCIS in fact Prentiss was given time to grow on us as Ziva wad forecd on us for 5 seasons

    • Haha… I get what you’re saying.

Ziva is a great character, but it’s true that the appears like they’re holding the character back to use for whatever superfluousness plot they need her for. The performance is great, but they somewhat pass by the depth of character development that could be conveyed.

It’s hard to fault NCIS because the entirety of the series is completely solid, but those looking for more depth can always find holes… and NCIS has many.

The best part of NCIS is that Pauley Perrette is almost identical to how Abby is portrayed…. except Abby isn’t allowed to swear as much. ;-)

  8. Well, apparently writers do listen to the fans. Anyways, while Prentiss was my favorite character, I’m not really happy to here about her sudden return. I wasn’t that estatic when it was annouced that JJ was coming back either. I actually like Ashley. I mean, come on. Ish happens and sometimes people are let go. If they did have plans to bring back JJ and Prentiss, they could have at least waited one seasonn and allowed Ashley to have a proper goodbye. This seriously blows.

I expect the firat half of this season to suck. I really do. I expect to feel like I’m watching a repeat of this past season of Hawthrone where it felt as if the writers were pullin’ random stuff out of their tails just to keep the drama up. But then again, it was always the psychos who kept me interested in this show the most.

  9. I bet these season will be Good no beyond good

  10. Thumbs up for making logical decisions. There’s nothing more upsetting to fans than a major cast shake-up. House lost me when it did it, and I was going to abandon CM as well.

Happy to see the fabulous cast restored.

    • i felt the same about the carnage on House too.

  11. No was more Upsetting is when people say they will abandon they show when one or two character leave

    • Really. I mean come on people.

  12. HOLA ME ENCANTA ESTA SERIE PERO EN ESPECIAL THOMAS GIBSON, QUE PADRE QUE SI SE QUEDO EN LA SERIE Y SUPER BIEN QUE REGERSO PRENTISS Y JJ

  13. Emily Prentiss is a huge asset to Criminal Minds, I am glad she is back.
    Whatever, happened to Mandy Pantakin?

  14. Right on, perhaps the show can get back to when it was good. Now bring back Gideon lol

    • It was still good even after JJ and Emily left.

  15. Hotch looks even more badass with a beard.

  16. Criminal Minds has always been one of my fave shows. I’m so glad the cast is back together. Guess the “powers that be” finally saw the error of their ways. As for Matthew Gray Gubler,it looks like another bad hair season. Someone get this good looking guy some good looking hair!

  17. Just when I had lost faith in TV producers!! This is the happiest I’ve seen all summer beside watching the end of Voldemort!! HA HA! Thank you Paget for returning! Thank you Anthony for posting the news! Thank you TV people for giving a damn about the fans! My pet bunny even binkied!

  18. WOOO HOOO !!!
    life is good.

  19. I’m so glad the rest of the team is back, and even more excited to learn that Thomas Gibson has renewed his contract. I love SSA Hotchner and he does look like a total badass with the beard. I like it, he looks totally HOT and ruggedly handsome.

  20. as much as i LOVE criminal minds why did they “kill” prentiss in the first place if they had intended to bring her back anyway…..hotch with a beard? thats going to take some getting used to.

  21. because if they didnt they would of all die amyways so I wonder if this is what play for the begging of the season I wonder what they have plan for the rest

  22. I am thrilled that Emily and JJ will be returning for good. Criminal Minds worked because of the dynamics of the team. I love this show, it’s one of only a few that I am faithful to. When something works don’t break it. The entire cast is so diverse but together they make the show a success. Each of their personal profiles adds to the their credibility that I enjoy getting glimpses of from episode to episode. I can’t wait to see how the new season plays out, but just knowing they are all back together again means it will be nothing less than what I’m waiting to see.

    • I agree with you 100%. Makes me so happy that they are making the show whole again…

  23. Now all is right in the world!!!

  24. thrilled…would love to see gideon come back as well tho

  25. I am so thrilled that the whole cast is back I do however still miss Mandy Patinkin, he is a wonderful actor, but this is my ALL TIME FAVORITE show on tv, I just can’t wait for the season premier it is going to be fabulous as always…Love the show

  26. I’m so so thrilled. I’m a huge fan of Criminal Minds. I have every season well I had every season that I watched over and over and over. Truly an addiction. Sadly I lost my home in a wildfire and all my seasons but two discs left at work and in my laptop. I love watching the shows but was not sure if I was going to enjoy the new season with two of my favourite characters gone. I’m so happy they are going to be back together. Together they make this show AMAZING! Can’t wait for the new season now. Have to buy a TV soon!

  27. Yeppers and, from what I saw of the last season ending, AJ Cook has
G-R-R-R-ATE legs. OOOH OOH WEEE! [fans self]

  28. This is the best news, breaking apart a perfect ensemble cast was a foolish thing to do. The women are as important to the series as the men, except for Spencer and Penelope who make the show PERFECT!

  29. i agree!!! i am one of the million fans of CM here in the philippines and I am very glad to know that JJ and Emily will be back in the series…it was a wrong decision to let them leave in the first place.
