Criminal Minds Season 7 Cast Discuss Female Firings, Hotch’s Future

While CBS’ Criminal Minds may still be one of television’s top series, the unfortunate focus for this past year has been on the unceremonious firings of A.J. Cook and Paget Brewster. If that’s not enough, there’s also the proverbial limbo that is the status of Thomas Gibson’s contract for season 7.

Fortunately, the cast of Criminal Minds is pretty straightforward and honest. So, when E! Online spoke with Thomas Gibson and Matthew Gray Gubler at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival today, they were more than willing to discuss the issues with this past season’s selective firings.

Speaking to Matthew Gray Gubler, it soon becomes apparent that he’s reiterating many of the same points that co-star Kirsten Vangsness brought up when we spoke with her at Comic-Con 2010.

Here’s what Gubler had to say about the senseless firing of A.J. Cook and Paget Brewster:

“We lost her and A.J. Cook for no reason at all, just on a whim, and that is sort of offensive to me because they’re my friends, and they did a good job, and the fans liked them. At the same time I understand that we are all grownups and six years ago we signed contracts that said they could fire us.”

Gubler then goes on to discuss how these continuous cast changes have affected life on the set:

“…it makes it harder because for six years we’ve functioned as a unit and then suddenly it’s different. These are my best friends in life, these actors, so losing them changed everything. And so I’m so glad that the band is back together now. I hope that Thomas doesn’t leave. I think Rachel [Nichols] will leave. Which is sad, she’s a nice girl…it was a tough position she came into, but like I said, it’s a strange situation, it’s Hollywood.”

While it appears that Gubler is more than willing to talk about the ridiculousness that is occurring behind the scenes, Gibson is staying decidedly quiet – especially when it comes to whether or not he’ll be returning this fall.

Here’s all that Gibson would say in regards to him returning to Criminal Minds for season 7:

“I hope [that I’ll return]; that’s all I really can tell you. I am just hopeful we can work something out.”

Of course, if Gibson doesn’t return, Gubler has an idea of who should take over:

“Emily, I think, would take over as the chief, or Joe Mantegna. I don’t know – we do have a lot of characters. I don’t know what they’d do. It would suck, but they’d figure something out.”

Showing that he still has a sense a humor about all of this, Gibson suggests a familiar CBS personality as his replacement:

“Charlie Sheen. He’s free, you know.”

With production on Criminal Minds season 7 starting up next month, the window for Gibson to sign a new contract is slowly closing. Hopefully the studio and network have learned from last year’s mistakes, and Gibson will be returning to work next month.

Of course, in the world of television, anything can happen. Lisa Edelstein quitting House is a perfect example of that.

Expect to hear news on whether or not Thomas Gibson will return in the coming weeks.

  1. I think Charlie Sheen SHOULD be the leader….WINNING!

  2. If Gibson does not come back, then the ONLY replacement option as team leader is Morgan.

    • Morgan sucked as team leader in season 5. Either Emily or Dave are much better options. Even JJ, with the experience she gained from being working in the state department and understanding more about politics than any of them (except Emily who grow up in the political world).

    • Criminal Minds is the greatest show on TV, All the same characters should return,Hotch, Morgan, all of them.To have JJ return would be great, she has been there from the beginning. And I would love for Emily to return,I hated that last show with her. So yes I want all to return, that is what has made that show number one for all this time. I would love for Gideon to return even if it is only once in a while. When you have a good thing going don’t take away what makes it great.

  3. When William Petersen left CSI it was a complete disaster. Breaking this team up will just bring this show down… work hard and keep them together!

  4. Sometimes you have to wonder if anyone in the front office is really in it to win. They just scrapped the spin off to this one before giving it enough time to really grow legs, and now they seem to want to pull a “New Coke” job on this version. It’s a good show, but that doesn’t mean people wont turn from it….It could become like South Park…Going from a classic to something not worth turning to anymore….

  5. The one that is potentially breaking them up is Gibson,he is the one holding out for more money.

    • Maybe because, in CBS, he is the lead actor with the minor salary, even Joe Mantegna earns more than him and is in a supporting role. I’m not saying he deserves more than Joe who is a much experienced and much better actor, with much more awards and recognized internationally, but if Shemar, who is also in a supporting role is earning the same as the lead actor, something is really wrong.

      • If it is all just about paying Gibson more, the front office should do it and just get over themselves! Hotch is the glue of this family and it makes no sense to not reward him for that. Charlie Sheen’s not at CBS any more, sucking up all the money from every other show on the network, so what’s the hold up? Ugh! They’ve got to fix this or I can’t watch my favorite show next season!!!!!

        • I agree with you completly. The cancelation of CM: SB also saved money and so died firing of Laurence Fishbourne from CSI, who was being paid 3 times more than what Thomas Gibson was recieving and was only on CSI for 2 and a half years, while TG was on CM for 6 years. But hiring Ashton Kutcher to replace Charlie Sheen will also be throwing a lot of money away.

  6. I can’t believe CBS would be stupid enough to mess with Hotch. Here is a patition to save Hotch.

As far as who should be leader if Hotch doesn’t come back, IMO It should be Morgan, I think he did a great job when he was leading before.

  7. Haven’t CBS learned anything or is it that the fans don’t have a say in any of their shows. We love JJ, Prentiss and Hotch. Don’t break ‘em up again. If Gibson’s holding out for a higher salary didn’t he deserve it after six years of doing a good job.

  8. I hope Emily Prentiss does not leave Criminal Minds, i feel she
is an outstanding actress in her role as a profiler. She has lived
in various Middleeastern countries, speaks Arabic and is very
intelligent. I am also glad they brought A.J. back, i am sure
lost ratings when she left. One of my favorite shows!

  9. I hope they don’t break up the team. I love them, all of them, especially together as a team. I feel like they are my family. I watch the new episodes every wednesday. My question is what’s the exact day season 7 is suppose to start airing?

  10. AJ & Paget MUST RETURN to this series — Especially AJ !!! Her new haircut(bangs) and new make-up style (more dramatic & sexy) were just starting to catch everyone’s attention, along with her great acting of course, and a whole new list of possible episode ideas could have been built to incorporate and take advantage of that. Why on earth did thoe idiots fire her??? Viewers watch this show in particular because of the chemistry & sense of family between the characters we have all come to know, love, and care about. They are SUPPOSED TO STICK TOGETHER thru thick & thin. Someone please tell whomever fired her to get a new job because he made a HUGE mistake. And I speak for MILLIONS of viewers. (and remember.. the sponsors care about making us happy viewers…….)

    • I couldn’t agree more. And those AJ eyes. I have never seen such beautiful eyes. They almost look liquid.
With AJ back is her “husband” back, too? I sure hope so. Loved his character personality.

  11. Gibson just has to come back. The show would not be the same without him.
Please, Thomas, sign the contract and come back.

  12. The TEAM is back together. I’m thrilled. I have watched every re-run on A & E and I feel like I know these characters like they are real people. To me they are.

  13. I think the show is great and wouldnt be as good if the original people werent in it. Morgan did pretty good as chief. it is a show you know. i always thought he was so good looking. I always thought that Reid was a cutie too. lol. Criminal Minds is just awesome.

  14. What kind of team will it be without JJ and. Paget? The are awesome actors. They need to come back to make the show complete.

  15. Hi,
I discovered Criminal Minds this year, and I am officially hooked! I love all the cast, story lines, etc. When will Criminal Minds start their new season?

    Thanks, Carolyn

  16. that a load of crap he was fab

  17. What a shame to fire so many fabulous actors. We, as the audience, get hooked on the show as well as the actors. Why screw up a good thing? Love Gibson. He makes the show. Don’t totally ruin it for your avid viewers!

  18. Please stop getting rid of the great cast!!! Seriously! They are a team. It’s not cool. There need not be any demanding outrageous salaries or demands, but this is a good crew, get Paget back and keep A.J. they are each unique and have credibility on there own and as members of the team.Really now, enough
