Season 6 has been rough for Criminal Minds with cast changes upon cast changes – upon even more cast changes. After the dust settled, the prayers of fans have been answered and A.J. Cook is returning to reprise her role as Jennifer “JJ” Jareau for the foreseeable future.

Of course… that’s not all. As Criminal Minds ends its sixth season, one thing has absolutely been made clear: anything CAN and Will happen.

After the BAU stumbles on a country-wide human trafficking ring, while searching for two missing persons, the team must work overtime to bring down this unsub. As Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) warns that the BAU faces possible staff changes, everyone assumes the worst.

When a certain familiar face walks through the door, shocked cannot even being to describe their expressions.

In an attempt to almost mimic the real-life drama surrounding the series, the Criminal Minds season 6 finale, entitled “Supply & Demand,” awkwardly forced the return of A.J. Cook as JJ, while simultaneously delivering a somewhat interesting, yet entirely unfulfilling, storyline.

Changing the tone of a typical Criminal Minds episode, a car crash with dead bodies in the trunk sets the location for the BAU’s traveling. Before leaving, Hotchner gathers the remaining BAU members and informs them that there are changes coming to the team.

As a whole, Criminal Minds tends to deliver storylines that transcend that of the generic police procedural. With a cast of superb, yet ever dwindling, actors and a talented writing team, it’s hard to believe that Criminal Minds would implement the return of J.J. in such an overt and completely disconnected manner.

While the transition and subsequent cliffhanger will surly right itself in terms of quality, this isn’t the first time that Criminal Minds has re-introduced familiar characters. Considering that fact, one would have expected the return of J.J. and Hotchner’s relocation would have been weaved into the finale’s storyline. Unfortunately, like many of television’s favorite series, the overall story and episodic plot are mutually exclusive. Acceptable? Yes – but it’s not ideal.

With the inclusion of a proverbial human trafficking ring, Criminal Minds served to once again raise the barrier for what can be expected on primetime television. Although, as the Criminal Minds season 6 finale progressed, both the reasoning behind the so-called human trafficking ring and the eventual reveal was extremely underwhelming.

As the movies Taken and Hostel have somewhat paved the way for illusive human trafficking storylines, it would have been unoriginal to simply mimic their famed storylines. Unfortunately, the evolutionary nature of this specific human trafficking ring feels all but ridiculous. Even though the reasoning for any UNSUB to commit crimes may be unique unto itself, it’s hard to believe that there’s an underground world of people willing to pay to see someone murdered – and what were they bidding on if everyone watched?

While it’s true that almost any criminal act could logically be probable, the complete reveal of the intent of the human trafficking ring served to contradict everything that fans have been unwittingly learning while watching the series. For the main UNSUB, the focus was on power and money, but there wasn’t an active of enough role for those willing to pay to see someone murdered. Even the voyeuristic nature that Criminal Minds has seen in past antagonists wouldn’t apply since the notion of a large group and contact with others would be contradictory to someone of that nature.

Upon its conclusion, the manner in which the storyline was concluded was acceptable, but nowhere near as emotional as the producers had intended it. With a transition to the return of J.J. to the BAU, the eventual reveal felt somewhat important as “the possible change in the BAU” storyline was rarely touched upon in the series finale.

Using Hotchner possibly leaving the BAU as a cliffhanger was interesting, but like I mentioned previously, it all presented itself at such a quick pace towards the end that the actual weight of Hotchner possibly leaving was all but lost.

Given Criminal Minds’ past year of problems behind the scene, one has to give the series some type of leeway in regards to how they choose to develop the future of the series. As cast changes continue to happen, it can’t be easy to find a solid foundation to build the needed seasonal story-arcs. While it’s likely that the series will once again find itself next season, one can’t help but wonder whether or not Criminal Minds has run its course.

…and don’t think I didn’t notice that open-ended storyline that would have Garcia leave the BAU.

  1. CBS can’t make up their minds about crap and they don’t seem to care about the fans since they never seem to respond to them.

They’re canceling good shows too, the new spinoff, Criminal Suspects, my wife actually likes this show and she’s pissed it’s been canceled. Again, typical of CBS. They’re staffed by a bunch of idiots.

What I want to see back on air is Ghost Whisperer and Medium, they axed those really good shows, WHY??????????????? Again, they’re idiots.

Sick of their brain dead decisions…..

  2. Over the moon JJ is back. The show wasn’t the as when she was gone, than you removed Emily. PLEASE bring Emily back too. Than don’t MESS with the cast, if it’s NOT broken DON’T FIX IT!!!!!

  3. Thank Goodness JJ is back. Pl ease return Prentiss and leave the men alone . it’s a great show.

  4. Yes Yes Yes JJ is BACK!!!! It is about time.

  5. this is what i think is gonna happen, JJ and Rossi were talking about her comming back to become a full profiler and that Hotch is gonna get promoted to Strauss’ position so Rossi is gonna take over for him

  6. It was a great episode. :)

  7. Would like to see Hotch’s character stay – but if Thomas Gibson’s sick of the gig, don’t do a “Gil Grissom” on us and go back and forth. CBS has already proved that, on this show, “anything can/will happen.” Hope they can stop playing w/the chemistry between characters and their popularity with the audience. We have enough negative surprises w/the economy, jobs, etc., let alone the rest of real life. Would like a bit of “stability” in our fiction shows! How else does CBS think its shows of past years (when I was a kid in the 1960′s and 1970′s) lasted so many years? In this day and age, it seems very few shows last 10 years – except for “Law & Order;” & that’s on NBC! (Let’s keep the good shows on CBS)! (Not much over age 49, your target audience)! Thanks.
Thanks to the people who answered my ? about what happened at the end of the season finale.

  8. I’m glad that AJ “JJ” is back. Now that her new show wasn’t picked up I’m hoping that Pagent “Emily” will return. Cutting Tom “Hotch” would be dumber then when they cut JJ. I hope they are not stupid enough to try that I’d hate to see the show go under. I’m glad Shemar “Derek” signed I’d quit watching it all together if they cut him. They had better keep Kirsten “Garcia” too, the show would not be nearly as good with out the Morgan/Garcia chemistry. I like Rossi but if one of the men has to go I’d rather have him go then any of the others. The new girl should go before any of the others. I think fans would have liked her better if they hadn’t screwed aroung with the original cast and then brought her in. I really don’t think she fits well. In a previous episode they said to get into the BAU they had to have years of feild experence (OK reid would be an exception, but he’s a ‘genious’ LOL) and she was fresh out of the academy.

    • I agree – keep Penelope & Derek! Also I agree – if it’s down to Hotch or Dave, would prefer that Dave go – he’s the older agent, and it would make better sense in the story line. (He could always be a consultant on call and make appearances on the show that way). It was clumsy the way they introduced the new girl. I assume she’s not showing her “personality” that much because she’s new, but so far she’s not fitting in quickly w/the group. I’ve been in that situation before (taking a new job), so I’m willing to give Rachel Nichols’ character a chance yet, but only if they find a better way for her to blend in. Feel like we as the audience are kinda being “played” w/all these cast changes just to see if we’ll keep on watching the show. Too many more changes, I’ve got other things to do on Wed. nights! (Don’t have DVR or TiVo). I refuse to switch back & forth between networks to watch very many shows. (Can’t have my life ruled/scheduled by TV shows)! They mess up the shows too much, I just find something else to do besides watch CBS. I know they’re introducing the new fall lineup this wk., but I’m kinda sick of new shows displacing older favorites too soon. It’s a great group of characters to watch; hope they can keep it together, but willing to say “forget it” if they don’t.

  9. Dude, it’s friday morning. Where’s the review?

  10. They can not get rid of Hotch! No no no!!! Glad JJ is back, now bring back Prentiss and LEAVE HOTCH HERE or I will go!

  11. Glad this is staying, but bummed that the other CriminaL Minds is getting axed. I would have thought the numbers would have been there from the fans from the original…Can’t figure what happened….Bad time slot maybe….Anyway I hope this one has a few seasons left….

  12. I agree w/the comments above, if Hotch or Penelope or Morgan go, it’s definitely a deal breaker.

  13. I just watched the episode, and I am happy and terrified: JJ is back, GREAT! It would be coller if Prentiss get back, but, I can’t force the luck :’(

and it’s true, this is the first time that a season finale has this… bittersweet taste. Bitter for the possibility of Hotch or Garcia’s gone. That, would destroy me.

Anyway, the episode was good, even if it was a flash case (they didn’t present a complete profile like other cases). And, after Rossi’s words, all I could think was: “Don’t cut it there, please”. So, I’ll make a new calendary: “Days for Season 7″!!

  14. As much as I was pleased to see JJ , I’m hoping that that new “JJ” is the one to go , that poor actress seems to have no personality! If hotch goes then so do I !

  15. PS by new “JJ” I obviously meant Seaver, love the real JJ !

  16. WHAT the HECK????? If they would monkeying around with the cast and stop getting rid of the original group that has worked in perfect harmony….they wouldn’t have to worry about these ridiculous story lines that do not make any sense. The human trafficing thing was insane…ridiculous actually – some young girl leading a bunch of guys to stage murders that people stand around and watch… Give me a break.
They need JJ back, Hotch to stay, Prentiss to return and then go back to what had worked….. otherwise – this is going to be another Law & Order -constant changing cast who finally just falls apart. This is my FAVORITE show….. please….just bring back the original cast – get rid of who ever that blonde is who has no personality and move forward!!!

  17. They can’t have Gideon back, because Mandy Patinkin left the show due to something like “creative differences” with the show’s producers or something; he wanted to leave the show, and he did. I like Rossi, but thought if they had to cut someone (budget reasons?), I’d prefer it be Seaver &/or Rossi. Love to watch Hotch on this show (he nails ‘em to the wall, I just love it! Wish it happened more often in real life); plus he’s an awesome Daddy to Jack. You’re right, the chemistry was just fine before they messed w/it. Wonder if somebody wanted to leave and they were stuck w/rewriting the script at the last minute to accommodate it? TV has enough competition from the Internet, NetFlix, etc. In this economy, if an actor pulls out because they want more $, they may be hard put to find it, I think. I see lots of viewers saying they won’t watch if the chemistry between people no longer works.

  18. Also in response to the last post I rec’d, I thought “CM – Suspect Behavior” had already been cancelled. Is this rumor or fact? It left us hanging this week, not knowing whether Beth was shot, or if the guy standing in front of Sam shot himself somehow, or somebody simply shot straight up in the air to be misleading and make someone think somebody got shot – who knows? It was inconclusive. So if Suspect Behavior was cancelled, then we’re left w/an anti-climax: who lived/died? Like Beth’s character enough to know. I wasn’t sure how anything she said, however true/noble, was really going to get through to a sick criminal’s head. My neighbor knocked on the door during the part that explained how the lead criminal became who/what he was. The more she talked, the more he seemed to feed off of it, which I didn’t like. I’ve heard characters on the original “Criminal Minds” talk more sensibly to the criminally insane or whatever they are than Beth was able to (but then, unless we’ve been in Beth’s shoes, who knows what anybody would say)? I don’t dislike the characters on the 2nd show – I just can’t develop a feeling of caring for any of them like I and others seem to have for the characters on the 1st show. Sounds like other people can’t get into it that much, either. Oh well – you never know if a show will work til you try. Perhaps too much change in too little time?

  19. i actually quite liked mike (?) from suspect behaviour, maybe cause of his cute british accent. i’m crossing my fingers that the group will get rid of ian, and then pagets new series will not do so well, then she can come back and the british guy could play her love interest :)
i’m so glad jj’s back, couldnt really stand the new girl, always thought she was a ‘replacement’ so I didnt really accept her. I dont think i’ll ever get oer her ‘replacement’ role so its better if they kicked her off?

  21. Check w/a meteorologist to be sure, but the barometer doesn’t just drop during tornadoes. They’d be reacting to every thunderstorm or severe thunderstorm or hurricane on the map. Does he/she kill during tornadoes hoping the debris field will cover the crime evidence? (We all groaned at work @ the hospital locally when a CSI episode stated, “The killer got lucky; the rain washed all the evidence away,” or something like that).
Any severe T-storm can produce tornadoes w/o warning, even w/o a tornado watch in place. Wouldn’t you have to narrow the criteria down somewhat? And how would you picture Penelope (God bless her heart) doing so? Also, the barometer drops during approaching snowstorms/blizzards.

  22. My overriding concern (which was that of my former coworkers, as well) is that TV not become a tool to teach criminals how to better outwit the law. I’m sure there are many things they don’t show on TV for that reason. I do watch shows, not just to see if I can guess the ending ahead of time, but to watch what kinds of situations single women might not want to unwittingly walk into if it can be avoided. My lawyer told me long ago that criminals who do it because they enjoy it (as opposed to, say, a crime of passion) enjoy always staying 1 step ahead of the law and being “smarter.” Makes me thank God for the articles like the Reader’s Digest “Dumbest Criminals.” If not for the dumb ones, what would this world be? I don’t wanna think about it!

  23. i like that jj came back but in my opinion her character got a bit umm stale I guess and Emily was never my favorite character I like seaver and i think she has a lot of potential and i don’t see why so many people hate her she is not jj’s replacement because if she were seaver would be a media liason and all that crap although it will be weird because they look similar but I think seaver is a cool character

  24. Until now, I’d never seen anyone stand up for Seaver. I figured it was useless to go against the popular opinion. It’s just part of human nature, whether you’re the new girl in school, on a job, etc. The timing of the introduction of her character was poor, I’ll grant you. They could let her personality show a bit more and keep her on, I thought. The show’s really playing on how the characters react when you change up or upend their whole routine and identity as a group. Unfortunately that happens a lot in real life. They seem to be trying to “keep it real,” as far as, “Would this happen to real agents,” including the political power plays, someone is lost from the team, etc. The real test is, can they keep the show something we want to invite into our living rooms ea. wk?

  25. Hotchner or Garcia can not leave the show. They can not end this great show…it is my favorite show and i love watching Shemar Moore (heeheehee)

  26. JJ as far as the show went in my opinion didn’t add much to the show so her leaving doesnt really matter nor does her coming back. The actress who played Emily prentiss could be used in a spinoff cm Europe I was thinking. As for Garcia she doesnt add much to the show either same with the character of reed. As for the character of Seaver if her character had been handled right maybe she wouldn’t have been so disliked by the fans of the show but the handling of this character doomed it from the start which is unfortunate because she might have been good but we will never know.

    • You mus not be a real cm fan cuz @ least Garcia and Reed both have major parts.Reed adds more character then enough and without Garcia they wouldn’t know half the things they find out. She is it when it comes to computers. And Reed who would know half the stuff that man figures out or even remembers; come on now you have to more realistic then what your comment is sayin! They all play major parts and give credit when its due they make a great team.

  27. I suffered enough when JJ left the first time. Then Prentiss. All strong female roles were leaving, and I would HATE for Garcia to leave :/, no matter if JJ is back. Seaver doesn’t have much of a personality, I’m not very fond of her, at least not yet.

  28. I just started watching the season six finale, and recognised the guy at the beginning… his character was kindof nerdy with glasses.. where is that guy from?

  29. JJ & Prentiss need to stay. The girl thats the murders daughter need to go. She’s going to end up killing to. WATCH. I say keep the cast of Season 6. Dont change them. Keeping them feels as if what that are doing is really happening as you are watching the show. With the other cast members, I get confused as in what they are doing and who they are after.
