After 5 seasons, Criminal Minds has finally reached the episodic milestone of the coveted 100 episode mark. While many series have reached it before, one tends to forget just how many years it takes to reach such a number. As with most series, the 100th episode is usually a special one and Criminal Minds is no different. Criminal Minds celebrated their milestone with the conclusion of their Reaper storyline and boy what an episode it was.

The season premiere in September showed the Reaper causing havoc in the life of BAU leader, Aaron Hotchner, which led him to have his family put into protective custody – but fans knew that the story wouldn’t end there. There had to be a conclusion, but I think it’s safe to say that no one could have guessed the outcome that we saw last night.

The episode was delivered in one of my least favorite formats; where the end of the story is in the beginning and we spend the entire episode catching up the 2 minutes we saw in the beginning. Although, to give credit to the writers, the way this episode unfolded not only nullified whatever hatred I had for said episodic format, but had me sitting on the edge of my seat the entire way.

With my original review of the season premiere, I was none too kind to C. Thomas Howell’s portrayal of George Foyet aka the Reaper, but I must now apologize because the performance he delivered in this episode was above and beyond all expectations. The way his character’s ingenuity, ingeniousness and heartlessness grew throughout this episode was just wonderful, yet terrifying, to watch.

So far I’ve attempted to deliver my thoughts spoiler free, but I feel like there’s no way I could discuss the last part of the episode without them.

[Spoiler Warning]

Holy crap. I’m saying those words because I’m not allowed to write the other form, but I assure you that’s exactly what I’m thinking and feeling.

The whole cell phone conversation with Hotchner and his wife while the Reaper is sitting there playing with his child was the most intense thing I’ve seen all year. Not only was I speechless, sitting on the edge of my seat, but at some point I was so connected to Hotchner that I started mimicking his emotions.

I don’t care who you are or how manly of a man you claim to be (I am extremely manly), if you listened to the conversation between Hotchner and his wife when they both knew it would be their last and didn’t cry, even a little, you’re lying.

To be honest, I didn’t believe they’d do it. I didn’t believe they would kill her off, and in such a horrific manner – so brutally. Although, I did think that the second twist would be that when Hotch shot into the curtains thinking it was the Reaper that it would be his son. Happily, I was wrong.

While I could continue talking about this further, I’m going to wrap things up and leave it to your comments. Criminal Minds has always been a great series and with the change-ups in the cast, no one would have been surprised if it didn’t last as no one can tell what will bring a show down (cite: Felicity). Criminal Minds has not only lasted, but grown with each season and this episode was a perfect representation of that.

Here’s hoping for 100 more because I’m in it for the long haul.

Enough of my sucking up. What did you think of this episode? Where you able to keep it together during their final conversation? How do you feel about how they killed of Hotchner’s wife? What about Hotchner’s final moments with the Reaper and his fist?

Speak now or forever hold your peace.

  1. What a disappointment! And what a cliche for TV dramas’ leading men:

    Monk — wife murdered
The Mentalist — Simon Baker’s wife murdered
CSI, NY — Gary Sinese — wife murdered in Twin Towers attack
NCIS — Jethro Gibbs — wife killed in traffic accident.
    Now, Agent Hochner’s wife murdered.

    Who else am I missing?

  2. I have two corrections to previous statements and the answer to some one’s question. First, Jethro Gibbs’ first wife and their daughter were killed by a Mexican drug lord. I always got the impression that they were shot, not killed in a traffic accident. Second, I’ve seen Haley Hotcher’s name spelled so many different ways, I alway laugh. (I just checked Wikipedia on both points, so if I’m wrong blame them.) Last, I don’t know were to see the full episode yet, but I found the important scenes (the phone goodbyes, the gunshots, the Hotch/Foyet fight, Hotch finding Jack, and some of the teams’ interviews) on youtube and cbs.com. Search “Criminal Minds episode 100.” I just bought Season 4 and am waiting breathlessly for Season 5.

  3. Oh my god, it was a great episode! I TOTALLY thought the same as you when Hotchner shot into the curtains…my first thoughts were: “oh God, no!” followed by “They wouldn’t, they would they?” that followed by “thank GOD”

  4. The 100th episode of Criminal Minds was absolutely AMAZING!! My mom got me started on watching the show and after buying the seasons I had missed on DVD and planning my life around not missing the show I have been a FANatic ever since!! Every moment of the episode left us hanging on the edge of our seats and I really don’t think it would have been as powerful had something tragic had not happened. Criminal Minds I do not believe has ever been recognized as they should being that it flys under the radar each week, but is ALWAYS in the top 10 for ratings!! The cast, writing and stories are great and bring on 100 more!! Love it, love it, love it!!

  5. I absolutely loved the 100th episode! I’ve been a fan from day one..and I honestly felt the loss of Hotchner’s charater…so moving..he is a great actor. The episode was amazing! The Reaper, the entire cast…I loved it!!

And the way the Reaper died was absolutely the best way to do it! Hotchner was the man!

  6. I know that all the one that are on late at night are reruns. BUT, I have seen one that SHOULD be followed up with the next one in line and it isn’t. It leaves you hanging. The one that come to mind is when Garcia had a date and at the end of the show her date shot here. Well, the next time Criminal Minds came on (The next hour)it did not follow up and let you know what happened to her. If something could be done about this, it would make the show a lot more interesting to its viewers. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

  8. OK, this was the best episode ever and Thomas Gibson was superb. But keep in mind that C. Thomas Howell has made the world hate him with his performance. BOTH he and Gibson are going to have to fight again, this time for top actor in a drama. What a scene. I REALLY HATE THAT GUY ! Good job Hotch. I was swinging too.

  9. The 100th episode was an excellent show!!!
Several times it had me jumping in my seat.
I could not predict the outcome.
The 102nd episode was exciting too!!

  10. WOW, can you say best episode ever, i didnt get to see this eposide the night tht it showed, but my grandmother told me all about it and after seeing it, id have to say it lived up to what she said, almost had me in tears. I cant even think of a show or anything that has had me on the edge of my seat more then this episode, it was amazingly done. Everyone should love Criminal Minds, great acting everything. Truely the best show ever. I dont think they can ever top this one!
    great job

  11. I loved this episode!
It was amazing how Hotch and his son “worked the case” to save his life!!!

  12. this episode made me dislike Hotch. It’s not becuase he killed or picked the job over jack but becuase he’s lost all the traits that made him ‘Hotch’. Rossi is now my favorite.

  13. well, i think he let them have that last converation because hotch would suffer more then, and foyed loves to see him suffer…

  14. well, i think he let them have that last converation because hotch would suffer more then, and foyed loves to see him suffer…

  15. It was completely uncalled for. The team doesn't know victims personally, so why bring in such horror happening to team family members and for the audience to have to deal with and remember.

    • I agree. They could have come up with something just as good and intense without using the main characters. All they did is hurt…there audience.

  16. I too was soo caught up in all the emotions…I didn't even know I had started to cry. I so wish that Hotch's wife would not have died, but it made a spectacular episode. My fear was also that he had shot his son when he shot into the curtains. I mean I literally shouted “NO” at the tv screen, but then I saw the Reaper come out and was releived. Though I knew he had to be faking his death because the episode was too good up til then to end with the Reaper dying so quickly.
All in ALl a GREAT episode!! I literally cannot get enough of this show!!!

  18. THIS IS THE BEST SHOW ON T.V. AND EYE CANDY TO BOOT!!! NOW I DO MISS MANDY! BUT I WATCH AND REWATCH EVERY EPISODE!! I WAS IN TEARS WHEN THEY KILLED HODGES WIFE! THE SHOW IS AMAZING AND HOPE THEY GET TO THEIR 300TH SHOW!!

  19. Okay, CM is like my real-life x-men. They are a loyal family that all have their special places to contribute—and they are thick as thieves, right? Anyway, it was their family-like love and compassion that did it for me on this episode. I don’t even remember breathing during the whole conversation on the cell phone and I collapsed when everyone else collapsed at the end of the call. The acting was absolutely exquisite. I really thought they’d end the Foyet story in the season finale, but this was so much better!! You never know what to expect from CM, that’s why it’s my fav. Love, love, loved it!

  20. I just watched this episode for the 3rd time tonight (Sept. 1, 2010). Rarely does a show that I know to be fictional make me FEEL it, like this one did. The acting was INCREDIBLE !!! It is Howell’s best performance since The Hitcher. I’m not usually one to pay much attention to who wins what at awards shows, but, if several of the actors in this episode did not win SOMETHING for their portrayal, there is no justice!

  21. I agree that the cellphone last conversation, the curtain’s shooting and Foyet’s death are climax scenes, but I would like to add the joint scenes of Hotch and his son, first the brief flashback and then the resolution of the plot, when he finds him safe. And the epilogue too: has anybody noted what does Jack has in his hand when he finally embraces his dad? Rarely a fictional plot had shocked me so much. Congratulations for all the guys, hope for more 100 episodes.

  22. I have to admit this was an amazing episode! I cried like if it was my own family member getting hurt. Even though the episode was supurb, I would’ve rather Hotchner’s wife not get killed. It’s just too emotional. Plus it seems kinda cold of Hotch not to take the early retirement. I absolutely love this show..so addicting!

  23. I ENJOY THIS SHOW I WATCH IT EVERY SUNDAY AND TUESDAY, I LOVE ALL THE ACTORS

  24. The people that wrote the story from season 4, ep 13 are so wrong. Why do you believe that the gipsis come from Romania? It’s not true! In the end the writer was right. It’s all about family, big family. But they should of known a verry important thing!!! NO OUTSIDERS!!!
An advice for the writers that wish to include Romania in theyr stories:DO NOT WRITE about things you do not understand! We are manny and gippsis are now considered to be from our coulture.

  25. hi i have seen season 6 of Criminal minds, and they have made a big sound mistake that lady Garsiya who is computer operator. the keyboard she is using its rubber key board and it never make sound when you use but in in season 6 when she use it.. its sound like 1990s keyboards… dont they use their brain….

  26. What a stupid show, just watched the episode where the guy was feeding people to pigs. They made it look like the fbi could come into Canada and do what they want and made the RCMP look like idiots. The truth is they wouldn’t even be allowed across the border and no local Cop would make the call to allow it and when it comes to investigating were the ones who catch most of your criminals trying to jump the border. Maybe the writers should stick to the only thing they have a clue about the only country there schools teach them about.

    • Seriously, what do you know about Law Enforcements ability to work with on another when requested? Obviously nothing.

    • One word………Fictional

  27. I’m still haunted by it!

  28. The episode 2 weeks ago showing a couple slaughtering people for the sexual stimulation may be the last episode of Criminal Minds I watch. I’ve watched most of the series for years and there has been a lot of perverts that were killers but this was too much!! The characters have been great, but now I’m extremely disappointed in the writers of the show.

  29. I thought this episode was one of the best. I as well didn’t think they would kill Haley off, especially like that. But you have to believe that Hotchner wouldn’t be the hero to his family like everyone wanted him to be. They made it clear he had to pay the ultimate price for not making the deal with The Reaper. But yes this was definatly a great episode. I cried like a baby because all I could think about was how horrible it would be to be on the phone with your partner when they were killed. They made it where everyone watching could relate to the human emotion and attachment.
