Rebecca is out to destroy Josh (following his alter-fleeing antics in the season 2 finale) in The CW's official trailer for Crazy-Ex Girlfriend season 3. Recycled from a failed Showtime pilot, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has been praised for being consistently funny, offering some of television’s best character work, and giving nuanced and respectful treatment to the subject of mental illness. The show, which also features multiple original musical numbers in every single episode, continues to be renewed despite its sluggish ratings on The CW, thanks in no small part to its critical acclaim.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend stars Rachel Bloom - a former YouTube star who also co-created the show and has won a Golden Globe for her work on the series - as Rebecca Bunch, a young woman who abandons her life as a New York lawyer to move to West Covina, California, and chase down an old boyfriend (Vincent Rodriguez’s Josh Chan.) Season 2 (out of a planned four seasons total) had the pair finally falling into a relationship, before Josh abandoned Rebecca at the alter in favor of the priesthood. Now, we know how Rebecca is going to respond.

The trailer for Crazy Ex Girlfriend season 3 (see the video above) shows Rebecca going into full-on villain mode, in order to take her revenge against her former beau. In the 45-second preview, we see Rebecca re-assemble her “girl squad” in order to help her get back at Josh. What happens next is anyone's guess at this stage in the game.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Premiere

The trailer doesn’t hint at what we will be seeing from the show music-wise in season 3, but we do know that much of the show's recurring cast will be back. That includes Nathaniel (Scott Michael Foster), Rebecca’s antagonist-turned-possible-romantic-interest who debuted on the show in season 2.

Will Crazy Ex-Girlfriend still work  in its new season, having pivoted from romantic longing to revenge as the primary motivator? It seems likely, given the the show's plot has often reset itself multiple times within each individual season. The new season, in addition to telling its own story, will have to find a way to set up the series’ expected final season too.

Whichever direction it goes, it’s a wonderful and nearly miraculous thing that a series as offbeat, specific and downright weird at Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, not only exists on a network, but that it’s lasted this many years.
