Following next week's release of Captain America: The First Avenger, Jon Favreau will unleash his own comic book adaptation that offers a different twist on a classic Americana symbol (the Old West gunslinger), otherwise known as Cowboys & Aliens.

Previous Cowboys trailers have played up the popcorn entertainment aspects of the genre mashup, which pits a variety of settlers living in the Arizona territory (circa 1873) against an invading army of extraterrestrial beings set on conquering Earth. The first clip released from the film does nothing but support the notion that this'll be a fun summer blockbuster.

Cowboys & Aliens features a who's who of famous creative talents working behind the scenes, including Favreau as director, Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard as producers, and sci-fi scripting team Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Transformers, Fringe) as co-writers.

On the acting side of things, Cowboys unites franchise stars like Daniel Craig (James Bond) and Olivia Wilde (TRON: Legacy) with well-to-do character actors like Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Sam Rockwell (The Assassination of Jesse James...), Keith Carradine (Deadwood), Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption), Abigail Spencer (Mad Men), and Adam Beach (Smoke Signals), among others.

Of course, the most legendary member of the cast is Indiana Jones himself, Harrison Ford, as the irascible Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde. Craig's mysterious loner, Jake Lonergan (get it?), has a rocky history with the Colonel, which leads to some fun clashing of the (movie) titans, so to speak, when the two must join forces in Favreau's western-meets-alien-invasion pic.

We've yet to glimpse the other-worldly creatures in Cowboys, which only adds to the foreboding atmosphere of the scene. Aside from that, though, Favreau and Co. appear to have taken a clever approach with the aliens, portraying them in an almost animalistic light. If you didn't know any better, you might think the unseen, mysterious monster in this clip was some kind of wild bear or rabid desert critter, the way it is portrayed.

The Cowboys & Aliens creative team have long been pushing the line about wanting to deliver a film that feels like an authentic, old-fashioned western that just happens to include extraterrestrials and flying spacecrafts as well. Judging by the costumes, music, and cinematography glimpsed in this new and previous footage shown so far, the film seems well-positioned to pull that act off.

Lastly - there's no denying that it's pretty cool watching Craig and Ford face off in full bad-ass mode. The former manages to still appear tough while slugging his costar in the face, which suggests it'll be all the more fun to watch these two butt heads throughout the movie.

Cowboys & Aliens will open in U.S. theaters on July 29th, 2011. However, a lucky few will be able to see the film a week in advance when it premieres at the 2011 Comic-Con Festival in San Diego next week.
