Following next week’s release of Captain America: The First Avenger, Jon Favreau will unleash his own comic book adaptation that offers a different twist on a classic Americana symbol (the Old West gunslinger), otherwise known as Cowboys & Aliens.

Previous Cowboys trailers have played up the popcorn entertainment aspects of the genre mashup, which pits a variety of settlers living in the Arizona territory (circa 1873) against an invading army of extraterrestrial beings set on conquering Earth. The first clip released from the film does nothing but support the notion that this’ll be a fun summer blockbuster.

Cowboys & Aliens features a who’s who of famous creative talents working behind the scenes, including Favreau as director, Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard as producers, and sci-fi scripting team Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Transformers, Fringe) as co-writers.

On the acting side of things, Cowboys unites franchise stars like Daniel Craig (James Bond) and Olivia Wilde (TRON: Legacy) with well-to-do character actors like Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Sam Rockwell (The Assassination of Jesse James…), Keith Carradine (Deadwood), Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption), Abigail Spencer (Mad Men), and Adam Beach (Smoke Signals), among others.

Of course, the most legendary member of the cast is Indiana Jones himself, Harrison Ford, as the irascible Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde. Craig’s mysterious loner, Jake Lonergan (get it?), has a rocky history with the Colonel, which leads to some fun clashing of the (movie) titans, so to speak, when the two must join forces in Favreau’s western-meets-alien-invasion pic.

For a teaser of that, check out the first clip from Cowboys & Aliens (via Yahoo! Movies) below:

We’ve yet to glimpse the other-worldly creatures in Cowboys, which only adds to the foreboding atmosphere of the scene. Aside from that, though, Favreau and Co. appear to have taken a clever approach with the aliens, portraying them in an almost animalistic light. If you didn’t know any better, you might think the unseen, mysterious monster in this clip was some kind of wild bear or rabid desert critter, the way it is portrayed.

The Cowboys & Aliens creative team have long been pushing the line about wanting to deliver a film that feels like an authentic, old-fashioned western that just happens to include extraterrestrials and flying spacecrafts as well. Judging by the costumes, music, and cinematography glimpsed in this new and previous footage shown so far, the film seems well-positioned to pull that act off.

Lastly – there’s no denying that it’s pretty cool watching Craig and Ford face off in full bad-ass mode. The former manages to still appear tough while slugging his costar in the face, which suggests it’ll be all the more fun to watch these two butt heads throughout the movie.

Cowboys & Aliens will open in U.S. theaters on July 29th, 2011. However, a lucky few will be able to see the film a week in advance when it premieres at the 2011 Comic-Con Festival in San Diego next week.

  1. Vid doesn’t work with me… I let it buffer, but it just stops playing (randomly) and skips to the halfway mark – it then freezes.

Oh youtube… why can’t you just have ALL the videos we want… then we wouldn’t have to watch trailers on stupid media players like the one above :(

    • It didnt work at first for me either…now it does.

  2. Indy ownes Manmeat loving (not)Bond

  3. I love Indy but Bond would kick his ass

At least it’s Craigs Bond and not Connerys. Don’t wanna see Sean beating up Junior

  4. Happy 69th Birthday, Indy!

  5. Craig’s Bond wins easily. Has someone ever counted the number of dead bodies each Bond leaves behind in each movie? I’d probably guess he’s killed more people in the last two movies than any other Bond…….. I think.

  6. i heard that the Battleship trailer is going to be on this cowboys and aliens movie.

  7. You know its funny, I remember after first seeing Daniel Craig in Tomb Raider opposite Angelina Jolie, (way back in 2001.) In the scene where she breaks into his apartment and he steps out of the shower butt naked.I remember thinking that he bore a striking resembalance to Harrison Ford. And would be a good replacement for Ford in the Indiana Jones Franchise.

I still believe this.I was disappointed when Harrison & George Lucas decided to make the last Jones film and have Indy be alot older than when we last saw him.Plus the story in Indy IV sucked :P

Ford and Craig have alot in common. They both take physical fitness very seriously. How Han Solo has managed to stay in such good shape after all these years is truly remarkable! There also about the same height. They have the same color hair, before Harrison’s turned gray. And they both can be very charming, but ackward in interviews.

I hope they got along on the set.And who knows – maybe they have talked about Daniel Craig ‘rebooting’ the Indiana Jones Franchise…

    • Im sorry did you just suggest that Indiana Jones should be rebooted???

      just no…….
