Cowboys and Aliens First Image From Jon Favreaus Cowboys & Aliens [Updated]

Update: We have info on who the first image is actually of! Read on below to find out.

Before we see even one frame of footage from Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens, I imagine it already has a lot of you excited. Besides having Favreau behind the camera, the film also has a killer cast that so far includes the likes of Daniel Craig (replacing Robert Downey Jr.), Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde (Tron Legacy), Sam Rockwell and Noah Ringer (The Last Airbender).

On top of that great cast, the screenplay was written by Damon Lindelof (Lost) and the writing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek).

However, if you’re after more than just the info of whose directing, writing and starring in Cowboys & Aliens then you’re in luck, as we have the first ever image from the movie for you to check out.

It’s not an official production image (shooting hasn’t even started) and doesn’t give much away. Instead it’s an image Favreau himself Tweeted from camera tests he’s in the process of shooting. If nothing else, it gives us a hint at the costumes that we’ll see in the movie. Take a look at the image below:

As I said, not much to see, but to be fair things are only in the pre-productions stages. It’s hard to see because of that light but I imagine since it’s so early in the game, the pic is just of a stand-in model Favreau is using to test the cameras. Or do you think it could be one of the cast members?

Update: Collider got a chance to speak to director John Favreau at The Empire Strikes Back charity screening recently and he revealed that the above picture is actually of the film’s lead, Daniel Craig. Here’s Favreau’s quote from Collider:

“That’s him [Daniel Craig]. We couldn’t really show too much because he didn’t want to reveal any images on Twitter but I wanted to kind of get a sense of the feel of it. He’s also somebody who plays an iconic figure that has a long tradition. So to have him playing a cowboy, I feel very good now having shot him and worked with him and hearing his thoughts.”

If you’re interested, you can read the rest of the interview with Favreau over at Collider.

In case you missed it, here’s the official synopsis for Cowboys & Aliens that we posted last week:

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents – townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors – all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

We’ll be sure to post more images from Cowboys & Aliens as they surface, but for the time being what do you make of the first image?

Cowboys & Aliens is set to start shooting this July with a release date already set of July 29th, 2011.

  1. I’m convinced that’s Sam Rockwell. body language, size, etc. It doesn’t really matter, but just wanted to poke a guess…

  2. Am I the only one who thinks this movie is going to be insanely cheesy? Has anyone else looked at the title of this movie? “Cowboys & Aliens”? Think about it. Cowboys & Aliens. I love Favreau as a director and they’ve assembled a great cast but man, the entire synopsis sounds insanely cheesy to me. I will hold off on judgment until the film comes out but man, I just cannot be enthusiastic about a film with a plot about cowboys fighting aliens.

  3. This will with out a doubt kick some serious cinema ass….the premise is anything but cheesy….incredible to be more precise and perhaps pick up a copy or an excerpt from the story. As well as in relation…read again the post from last weeks descriptive. Then think of who already has been cast…..think of your director…pause a moment…………anything but “chessy.” And DC and HF in a Western?!! Hell yes!
