cowboys and aliens why the aliens attack Second Explosive Cowboys & Aliens Trailer Invades

Jon Favreau’s sci-fi/western mashup Cowboys & Aliens is expected to be one of the biggest and most exciting films of the summer.

Since we can’t get enough of Cowboys & Aliens, we made sure to feature the film in our recent Ultimate Summer 2011 Trailer – and now Relativity Media has given us some exciting new footage to drool over by releasing the latest trailer for Favreau’s adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg’s graphic novel.

The first trailer primarily focused on the western character-story (albeit with a few sci-fi mysteries), leading up the alien invasion. However, the new trailer gives film fans a better idea of what to expect from the proceeding events – as well as how they play into the larger overarching story.

As fans of the graphic novel already know, the trailers only scratch the surface of Cowboys & Aliens’ characters and story.

While the Cowboys are once again featured heavily in the trailer (thanks to some great interplay between Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde), fans hoping to get a sneak peek at the titular Aliens may be left somewhat let-down – since an alien hand doesn’t exactly count.

According to Favreau, who spoke at WonderCon about the choice to keep the aliens under-wraps in the marketing, the filmmakers wanted to retain an air of mystery – to not just entice audiences into seeing the movie but also offer a few surprises when the film hits theaters:

“The story is if you show two pieces to an audience, and one shows the entire movie and the other one holds things back, they will say that they like the one that they see everything in better, but if you look at what they actually spend their money on, they tend to be more intrigued by something that holds a sense of mystery, where you feel like you are getting to experience something new and not just fulfilling a check list of the trailer that you saw when you go to see the movie. For this film I want to make sure that if the audience goes to see it that there is going to be a lot of surprises in it that they haven’t seen in the marketing materials.”

There’s no doubt that after watching the newly unveiled trailer, Favreau will have succeeded in capturing that sense of mystery – guaranteeing that there will be plenty of moviegoers lining-up on opening night for a glimpse at the final film.

  1. my hopes are revived again and i will not give a damn about any haters. sure it might seem silly and terrible, but this isn’t Micheal Bay. It’s Jon Favreau, and no studio is forcing him to make a film he doesn’t want to make this time

  2. The new footage is amazing I can’t wait to see this one. This summer is gonna rock

  3. Looks pretty awesome

  4. I didn’t even know Sam Rockwell was in this. awesome

  5. Did they just give away that Olivia wilde charatcer is an alien? she said “they will kill you all thats what they did to my people” or something to that degree. wow

    • She could just be a survivor from another raid, like Craig is.
Anyway this looks cool, it looks like it could be a real solid popcorn movie and Favreau is good at delivering them (Iron Man 1 & 2). And I think that it’s a smart move to hold something back and not just show every thing in the trailer, unlike some other trailers (I’m looking at you Priest).

      • i guess. but if that was the case she could have said “they killed my town or family not MY people. when someone says that they mean a race of people

        • Maybe she is part indian and her people could refer to that

  6. all i can say is,that Jon Favreau knows what he’s doing!
looks great, and leaves you wanting to see more!

  7. It doesn’t look like a total waste, but I can easily see this one getting lost in the shuffle, of summer block-busters. Wish I could jump on the band wagon, but I’m not convinced.

  8. I’m a city slicker, so I may use the term wrong, but what I do like, is how the alien vessels, rustle humans like cattle, with the lasso effect, before carrying them away.

  9. He would have made a fantastic Roland in the Dark Tower series. But this movie looks stupid.

  10. if the setting was in a cowboy era how come CRAIG had a scientific weapon on his hand

    • that is what the flic is for dufus
