‘Zombieland’ Writers To Script ‘Cowboy Ninja Viking’ Adaptation

Jon Favreau has his awesome-looking Cowboys and Aliens on the way next summer but after that we can look forward to another comic book adaptation that mixes the Wild West with other geeky genres.

Deadline is reporting that Disney has purchased the feature pitch for the adaptation of the 2009 graphic novel, Cowboy Ninja Viking. They have already hired a couple of writers to pen the adaptation in the form of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Reese and Wernick are on the list of hottest writers in Hollywood right now, having written the hit zombie-comedy Zombieland, the X-Men spin-off Deadpool and they were also announced back in January as the writers of the G.I. Joe sequel.

Cowboy Ninja Viking is based on the graphic novel of the same name by AJ Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo. If the title isn’t enough to get you interested then the out-there plot should do the trick:

“Cowboy Ninja Viking is the creation of Doctor Sebastian Ghislain, a psychotherapist who recruits Multiple Personality Disorder patients to produce a unit of counter-intelligence agents called Triplets. But what happens when those guys become out of control assassins? That’s when the deadliest Triplet of them all, Cowboy Ninja Viking, is called in to take down his own brethren.”

With a plot like that I’m definitely not surprised that a studio has swooped in and nabbed the movie rights, although I am a bit surprised Disney was that studio (what with its output usually being more family-friendly). There’s so much potential with that plot for all sorts of cool action (fight) sequences and the mix of those very different titular personae should give it that unique edge.

To add to the one up top check out some of the other covers of the graphic novel to give you the feel for what you may expect:

Despite having writers already in place, Disney is still looking for a director for the adaptation. But I’m sure if the studio was eager enough to buy the rights to a movie version just a year after the comic was first published then we’ll hear word of possible directors fairly soon.

Stay tuned to Screen Rant for more on Cowboy Ninja Viking as news comes out.

  1. @ Ross
to answer that this comic being made into a movie by disney’s dreamworks pictures under the touchstone pictures banner.

  2. i suppose all my reckless ranting is to blame for this debaucle of East by Norse West…. torment me some more… go ahead…

  3. You know what?
I think I’m more sick of all the new “graphic novels” and that type of writing, than of any amount of remakes – whether it be of foreign films, or “classic” films.

It seems like everyone and his 2nd cousin twice removed, is writing some “gritty” graphic novel, with crappy art-style. I am NOT a fan.

    • Its really cool tho. it doesnt try to be gritty at all. the art is cool, and theres some really good humor there too. i heavily recommend it.

  4. Coming soon: Iron Chef Mutant Lizard Alien Super Hairdresser Juggler.
