Last week the world was subjected to quite a few reports about the upcoming production of Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America. Most of these stemmed out of interviews with director Joe Johnston on the press tour for The Wolfman which opened in theaters this weekend, and in the interviews he updated fans on the status of the project.
The biggest revelation was that the casting decision on the title character would have to be made by March 1st and that it wouldn’t be a major Hollywood star. We would finally know who will be playing Steve Rogers aka Captain America in the next few weeks!
Johnston also said that they had narrowed down the selection process to 5-6 individuals and through scattering reports, we know that Chad Michael Murray, Ryan McPartlin and possibly Jensen Ackles are likely three of the candidates. Now comes a completely unverified rumor that Star Trek’s Chris Pine could be the top contender for the role.
This rumor comes from CinemaSpy who claims to have an “exclusive” on this unsubstantiated report through a random insider email. While by that alone, this means pretty little, it is still an interesting discussion point on who the other candidates may be and whether or not Chris Pine would be a good choice for the role. Here’s the email they said they recieved:
Anyway, just thought you guys might like to know that Paramount and Marvel are pretty close to closing a deal on casting Steve Rogers/Captain America and fans might be excited to learn that the short list includes somebody a lot of fans speculated about, Chris Pine. From what I’m hearing, he’s the frontrunner right now, though that could change. Can’t tell you who the other couple of choices are, cause that’ll work against me for reasons I don’t want to get into.
Anyway, hope this is helpful, feel free to do what you want with it.
I always get suspicious when seeing two paragraphs start with “anyway.” On a more serious note, the more I think about Chris Pine as Captain America, the more I can see it happening although he wouldn’t exactly qualify as an unknown as Johnston was describing. That being said, like Chris Hemsworth who’s playing Thor, they both are just hitting the beginning of Stardom and their careers. Both have several major projects lined up for the near future as well.
Pine has that charming and lovable quality about him and he can certainly play the heroic leader Captain America becomes. From the physical standpoint, Pine stands at 6′ ½” which puts him at a good height in between Robert Downey Jr.’s 5′ 9″ and Chris Hemsworth’s 6′ 3″.
Make sure to check out our articles on Captain America’s movie costume and the main villain being the Red Skull.
Could Chris Pine fit the bill in your mind?

If they choose either Chris Pine or Jensen Ackles, I'll be happy. I personally think they should go older with the role but if the studio has made their minds up over age range, then there is zero point bitching about it now
These guys aren't going to be massively huge or anything. People who think they will be as big as they are portrayed in the comics are in for disappointment.
Height doesn't have much effect in these situations because they will have Pine look small and scrawny at one point in the movie and jacked later on. They can also make these guys appear much larger than they really are.
And those names you threw out there are bad. Please, none of those actors.
You secretly love Channing Tatum! JK
Rob,
do you know if they made director's cuts of the previous Marvel movies? Like Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk?
Hey mchops,
Nope, there weren't Director's cuts of either, just added special features and deleted scenes on the special editions of the home video releases. Neither Favs or Leterrier had too much they wanted to change from the final theatrical cuts to make an official director's cut release.
How does that give them something in common? Can you elaborate?
based on height…Ackles it is.
Nooooooo…..Captain America should be Steven Colbert.
Back in the '40s, a 29 year-old would have already been considered a MATURE, established adult, often with a family with young, school-age children…the breadwinner of the household/the “man of the house”. Nowadays, that is often used to describe a 30+ or 40+ year-old man. That is how I understood Joe's comment…
Okay… you'll get no argument from me. Chris Pine as Cap.
@Kati…
When I first saw Chris Hemsworth onscreen in Star Trek, I didn't think he looked like Chris Pine at all. When I first saw him, I thought Hemsworth was Matt Damon.
I agree. As much as i like Woody Harrellson, this is not the part for him.
Yeah, we all love Woody but not for Cap lol.
mchops, no one is looking for Mr. Olympia to play any comic book character. But come one, as i stated before, cap is not lean, nor a small guy. He is muscular, with a good amount of muscle mass on him. That was what the super soldier serum did to this body. It increased his muscle mass beyond leanness. There are alot of muscular guys, who can actually act, and do have the speed and the charisma to pull off Captain America.
For exmaple, the Rock (Dwayne Johnson). He would make an excellent Captain America as result of his muscle mass, his speed, and agility, which he has demonstrated to possess during his wrestling career. Furthermore, he is a good actor, and a versatile one at that. However, I am not suggesting that he play Captain America, since he is black and the date of Cap's inception (the early 1940s) would contradict the time period and the storyline from the comics.
Frankly, I think that most of the people who agree with the good-looking Pine as the pick for Cap are women.
However, Iron man is taller than Cap.
Rob, you always seem to agree with the studios' pick when it comes to the lead. No offense, but do you know anything about the comic book characters they (the studios) are making movies out of? Or do you just hit up marvel.com every once in a while to see what and why we are protesting?
However, I thought Ed Norton was an excellent Bruce Banner, and Tobey Mguire a good Peter Parker, and Pat Stewart as Prof. X.
That's because they're making the right decisions bud, and how can you disagree when they've only made 2 movies (both very good, mind you). The casts and directors so far have been spot on so until I see otherwise, how can you possibly be down on any of the decisions when we've not seen ONE thing yet on Thor or Cap?
As for the books, I read the X-books and many of the mainstay big Marvel ones except for Spidey and FF4 which I only mainly read now in crossovers.
I like reading non-Marvel series like Preacher and Y the last Man which I read last year and things like The Walking Dead.
Now it's your turn. What exactly are you disagreeing with so far and why?
I read one of your comments above which talked about lack of muscle mass and this makes no sense. You have no idea who will be selected or how much muscle he can and will need to build for the role. People unjustly complained about the same stuff about Hemsworth (who was no bigger than Pine in his Trek role) but from all accounts, he looks like a “beast.” You do realize that comic books tend to exaggerate perfection in their characters…
Oh, I dunno … my brothers happened to agree with my comments as well. So I don't think it's only women who favor him as a possible choice for CA. Several comments on this very thread attest to that.
And besides, CA is pleasing to the eye in the comics anyway. It wouldn't 'fit' if they made a pick like Adrian Brody, for example. :-p
HA HA HA
Not sure how to interpret that reply. I guess it's laughter at my Adrian Brody remark?
Since when is “The Rock” a good, versatile actor??
Get Smart
Tooth Fairy
Yeah… that's versatile
Stephen Colbert has about as much of a chance as doing Captain America justice as Bob Saget.
yes, it is.
and don't forget Walking Tall (former army-man turned local town sheriff), The Game Plan (an NFL quarterback who finds out his has a child, transforming his life from a self-absorbed man to a loving father), Doom (leading his troops through a barrage of undesirables), and many more, in addition to the ones you just mentioned…yeah that's versatile, because he is not playing the same role per film, nor the same personality type per film, as he has played both serious and comedic roles. One thing Rock has said, if i remember correctly, is that he does not want to be type-casted. He's done a good job.
Furthermore, he has gotten good reviews on his skills as a actor by people both in and out of the business.
That would be awesome
That would be awesome
He's already a Captain, he's already been well received by fanboys and girls alike and shown he can handle taking on an iconic character that people are very fond of, and he's absolutely proven he's capable of handling a very physically involved role. Pine has the look, the nationality, the ability, and my vote.
The man is perfect. Perfect.
