The marketing – or lackthereof – for Contagion is almost as mysterious as its plot. For a film boasting an all-star cast, several of whom are Oscar winners, and directed by Steven Soderbergh, mainstream moviegoers know nothing of the existence of this must-see picture. It was because of that lack of information, whether it be through teasers or stills, that we simply couldn’t list it among Screen Rant’s most anticipated 2011 movies.
Perhaps Warner Bros. was waiting for the right moment to unveil their sci-fi thriller, to not get lost in the busy summer movie season shuffle. The wait is over and the first Contagion trailer is finally out.
Normally when a cool, interesting or exciting trailer comes along, we’d say it’s a must watch and that the film is something you need to keep on your radar. While the Contagion trailer is cool and the movie is something you need to check out come September, we should warn you that it’s rather spoiler-heavy. Much of the plot, and certainly some keep informational bits are revealed in the trailer so be prepared to learn a little more than you should by watching this:
So, now you know what happens to Gwyneth Paltrow and why Matt Damon is doing what he’s doing. Hopefully that reveal means there’s just that much more to the story in terms of twists and plot developments. Otherwise, this was an odd marketing choice, since the premise supported by a cast such as this are rather strong marketing points on their own. They could have gone the teaser route, just hinting at what’s going on and introducing the characters.
While the spread of the disease is cause of the problem the world faces, the symptom of fear is what tears the world apart. This is the message and focus of the trailer. It’s like 28 Days Later but without the zombies. That’s how strong fear is as a result of the outbreak.
Contagion is headlined by Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bryan Cranston, Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne. It’s based on Scott Z. Burns’ screenplay and opens in theaters September 9, 2011.
