Contagion Outbreak poster Trailer Mashup Shows Contagion Looks A Lot Like Outbreak

The first trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion is similar to the 1995 virus-centric movie, Outbreak. Both are star-studded affairs and share the plot of a worldwide biological threat – but they may be even more similar than you think. We’ve thrown together a trailer mashup showcasing footage from Outbreak set to the trailer audio of Contagion to highlight the close ties between the two films.

On the surface, the similarities are obvious – both involve a deadly virus spreading uncontrollably across the globe, impacting the world and inducing fear. The government has a major role in the threat, as well as the solution, and of course there are central characters who drive the story. Look closely and you’ll notice some of the characters in the two films almost seem identical.

Either way, the Contagion trailer is action-packed and intense. If you go back to the mid-90s and watch the trailer for Outbreak it brings some energy, but it is not nearly as well-done as this first Contagion trailer. The biggest plot difference between the two seems to be that Contagion focuses on the global scale instead of honing in on one town.

But enough talk – check it out for yourself and let us know if you’re seeing double as well.

It’s strange to see Laurence Fishburne with a mustache in a very similar role to Morgan Freeman and his mustache in Outbreak. In addition, the blonde wife (ex-wife in Outbreak) contracting the virus and stuck in a hospital bed carries over through both of these. There are other faint similarities, but those two are the most obvious. Of course, every movie seems to be a version of something else these days – and Soderbergh may very well have been influenced by Outbreak - but Contagion comes to the big screen at a time when what sparks mass fear has evolved drastically since the mid-90s.

Now that you’ve seen the mashup, compare the two trailers for yourself right here:

  1. Outbreak is immediately what I thought of when seeing the trailer. Second thought, because of the first thought, this movie will be a rental for me at best.

    • Yep, good to see I wasn’t the only one who made that immediate connection. I guess Hollywood feels we need a big budget virus scare flick every 15 years or so?

  2. Seems like an inside job to me. Warner Bros. made Outbreak too.

  3. Haven’t seen any of the two.Should I wait for the new or just watch the old, dunno because they both look the same to me.I bet the ending will be the only difference.

  4. Of course, Matt Damon in a movie about an evil government (American) causing a world wide outbreak of something that could destroy all human life.

I will pass on this one just like I passed on Green Zone.

Good catch on the similarities though Mike.

  5. Mneah…not to pass judgement on a movie I haven’t seen yet, but honestly…Outbreak looks like it might be the more entertaining of the two; I felt slightly bored watching the trailer for “Contagion”. GREAT casting, though…

  6. another unoriginal movie, maybe it might be good and then maybe not…..

  7. “I will pass on this one just like I passed on Green Zone.”

Why in the world did you pass on “Green Zone?” It was one of the best combat flicks I’d seen in some time. A shame you had to miss it on the big screen based upon nothing more than assumptions.

  8. The first time I saw the trailer for Contagion, I thought it was Outbreak coming on tv sometime until I noticed the different characters. Have the writers completely lost the ability to come up with a new idea?

    • What do you mean “new ideas”.

Sorry, I was about to try to walk you through a socratic method examination of your ideas regarding film making or storytelling in general but that would be like leading a mule through a minefield. Most stories are mash ups of other stories; most classics actually echo each other it is other dimensions than the one three-word summary of the movie that makes films and stories original. You arrogant, presumptuous dingbats. All of you.

  9. Ronnie. The general opinion being expressed here is that they are TOO similar. Not that people don’t grasp the concept that films are born of films…..
You missing that point makes you arrogant, presumptuous, and a dingbat.
And you have a child’s name. Ronnie. Unisex baby name.
