The latest character form the blockbuster horror franchise The Conjuring set for a feature length spinoff is reported to be The Crooked Man. Following the release of two proper entries in the wildly popular series from acclaimed director James Wan from 2013 and 2016 - in addition to several spinoff productions based on the foreboding presences made manifest in Annabelle and The Nun - the haunted house trappings that made the trademark property into a mainstream success has been turned into a seeming cash cow of inexhaustible potential.

And with the forthcoming theatrical release of Annabelle: Creation due to make a splash among general audiences later this summer, it should perhaps come as no small surprise that the powers that be might want to develop further spinoff films based in part on The Conjuring franchise. With a wealth of material to be found in the real life case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren to mine, there is probably no immediate end in sight for the current horror movie powerhouse, and the latest word has The Crooked Man set to be the next in-house production.

First introduced to viewers as an especially menacing spectral presence in The Conjuring 2, the latest report from THR has New Line Cinema tapping up-and-coming Hollywood talent Mike Van Waes to pen the script for an original The Crooked Man feature film. Based in part on an English nursery rhyme, the Crooked Man from The Conjuring movie universe is depicted as an especially slender and ghostly presence who sees fit to stalk his victims whilst maliciously bellowing at his prey.

The Conjuring 2

Serving as a presumed followup to Annabelle: Creation due out this August and the still in production 2018 release of The NunThe Crooked Man is sure to provide fans of The Conjuring franchise another original horror production to sink their teeth into in due time. It remains to be seen which director will be tapped to lead the charge following the first pass on the script by Van Waes, but with any luck things will being moving along shortly.

To date, The Conjuring and its immediate franchise successors have become a force to be reckoned with at the box office. Case in point, the first spinoff production Annabelle made back a staggering $897 million in 2014, thus paving the way for like-minded productions Annabelle: CreationThe Nun, and the just announced The Crooked Man to follow suit.
