The Conjuring 2 spinoff The Nun has officially finished production, as confirmed by its director. When The Conjuring hit theaters in 2013, it's unlikely that anyone could have imagined just how successful the film would be, earning nearly $320 million on a modest - for Hollywood - $20 million budget. While normally that would guarantee sequels were made - and it did - The Conjuring also managed to spawn a franchise of loosely interconnected sub-series, each focusing on a different memorable villain from the main Conjuring films.

The first of these was Annabelle, the creepy demon-possessed doll that managed to steal every scene that she turned up in during The Conjuring, despite having limited screen-time. While her solo film wasn't exactly beloved by critics, it made a ton of cash, and Annabelle's journey will soon continue in this summer's much better reviewed Annabelle: Creation. 2016 sequel The Conjuring 2 ended up spinning off two different monsters, the first being demonic nun Valak in the simply titled The Nun, and the second being the recently-announced Crooked Man.

Set to release in summer 2018, The Nun looks to continue the seemingly endless supply of Conjuring-related fright flicks. Directed by Corin Hardy (The Hallow), The Nun began filming in early May, and according to Hardy himself, has now completed production. Hardy relayed the news via a recent tweet, as well as sharing a cast and crew wrap photo to commemorate the occasion. Check both posts out below.

Co-written by franchise creator James Wan and Annabelle writer Gary Dauberman, The Nun stars Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story, and Conjuring star Vera's sister) and Demián Bichir (Alien: Covenant) as a nun and a priest investigating the mystery of the titular demon. Bonnie Aarons will reprise the role of Valak. Details on the plot beyond that are scarce, and one wonders where the events of The Nun will fit into the continuity of the overall Conjuring universe.

One story aspect that'll require some explanation is why Valak - a powerful demon - will be in Nun form in a spinoff film, when The Conjuring 2 established that he took that appearance specifically to torment Lorraine Warren, a devout Catholic. Then again, one could presumably explain it away by saying that Valak takes the Nun guise on whenever dealing with very religious people, such as the leads in the spinoff. Only time will tell what tact Wan and Dauberman choose to take creatively.
