For the Conan fans out there who are welcome to accepting the Schwarzenegger-less reboot of the franchise, we have another bit of casting news for you.

The ball started rolling for the return of our favorite Barbarian with the major announcement a month ago that Stargate SG-1′s Jason Momoa was cast as the title character in Conan. At the time, we also found out that they had made an offer to Mickey Rourke to play Conan’s dad and yesterday it was confirmed that he is in fact currently in negotiations for the role.

But what about the bad guy in all of this? What good is Conan without enemies to destroy? According to our pal El Mayimbe at Latino Review who has been feeding the world all of the casting announcements so far for Conan, MMA fighter Bob Sapp will be playing the character of Ukafa, a Conan villain.

From the Conan character casting breakdown released in October, we known Ukafa is a massive and powerful warrior and leader.

He’s in his 30s-40, very dark-skinned African or African American, massively framed at six-foot-five, gold-toothed, hardened by a lifetime of war, a leader of Kushite Tribemen from the savannahs of Kush. Ukafa is Khalar Singh’s second in command, jealous that Singh’s son, Fariq, will one day be warlord. He obeys his leader but plots the overthrow of his son. He is a mighty warrior and unbeatable in battle—until he comes face to face with Conan.

Bob Sapp is a monstrous man in size and muscle and he certainly fits the physical description. He’s had a few small roles in big films including The Longest Yard and Elektra so it looks like we’ll get to see him have a bigger presence on screen with Conan.

Filming will start next month so expect plenty of new casting announcements soon!

Conan will be directed by Marcus Nispel and will likely open in summer 2011.

  1. Great get the dark skinned black guy as the villian…typical hollywood casting lol.

  2. iceman09–I actually agree with you here. This casting choice is as typical and boring as it gets. With every new casting decision that has been made regarding this film (including the choice of director) I become more and more ambivalent about it.

  3. This is BAD guys…Bob Sapp is a HORRIBLE actor (and an even worse fighter). Wtf are they thinking? Casting a burned out, juiced up pro wrestler/”fighter” as the main villain?

  4. Jason Momoa played the oh so sexy Ronan Dex in Stargate Atlantis…he has a huge fan base who love him and hope this movie isn't a bad choice for him.

  5. Please tell me you are female.. :-)

  6. I'm with the people on the side of the “this is a bad casting choice” decision. Seriously, this just put a major dampener on the film.

  7. This is very depressing. As a long time Conan fan (I actually have all the books) the news that Conan's father appears (“Conan, I am your father!”, OMG) would appear to demonstrate that this will be another rehash of assorted different plot elements around the usual origins story rather than a bona fide Conan film.

  10. I agree — FRIENDO…..

  11. lol Well it looks like it might be an interesting movie! I think it would be cool if the Conan movie keeps really close to the old comic books. That would be sweet! and I liked the first conan movie also. I liked that they had to fight against this ancient cult of Set. I think that's pretty interesting. It kind of touched upon ancient mythology alil bit. I think that's pretty cool! It kind of gave the movie a layer of sophistication, but some cool elements in it. I hope this new conan movie is not over simplified thats for sure…

  12. What do you mean the “I am your father” story? I am not that savvy when it comes to the Conan story. Does this bad guy turn out to be the father? I thought Conan came from a specific tribe or something. I didn't know Conan was part African. Or am I just getting more confused then I need to be from your message.. lol
