‘Company You Keep’ Trailer: Robert Redford’s New Film Boasts a Star-Studded Cast

9 months ago by Robert Yaniz Jr.

Robert Redford – the man who brought us cinematic classics like Ordinary People and Quiz Show – is getting ready to introduce his latest star-studded opus, The Company You Keep, to the world, and now we have our first look at the trailer.

Based on the Neil Gordon novel of the same name, the film stars Shia LaBeouf as a young journalist on the trail of Jim Grant (Redford), a former anti-war radical who hid from the FBI for more than 30 years. Terrence Howard plays the FBI agent on the case, and Susan Sarandon is the recently-captured fugitive who was part of the same organization as Redford’s character. The all-star cast also includes Julie Christie, Nick Nolte, Anna Kendrick (who stars in this fall’s Pitch Perfect and may be joining the cast of Captain America 2), Brendan Gleeson, Stanley Tucci and Chris Cooper.

The script was written by Lem Dobbs, whose most recent credit is Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire. However, while that film emphasized style over substance, The Company You Keep looks like it will feature a more character-focused narrative. Redford’s last couple of films failed to connect at the box office; although The Company You Keep just may have the perfect blend of Hollywood thrill ride and topical subject matter to score with audiences.

Though it does not currently have a scheduled release date, The Company You Keep is set to make its premiere at the Venice Film Festival next month, before appearing as an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival. With a cast stacked with numerous Oscar winners and nominees and a plot filled to the brim with political intrigue, it’s likely that Sony Pictures Classics – which picked up U.S. distribution rights – will position it as a major contender for the upcoming awards season.

In the meantime, let us know what you think of the trailer. Will you be lining up for Redford’s latest?

Stay tuned to Screen Rant for the latest regarding the North American release of The Company You Keep.

Hmm. With this and Lawless, it seems Shia Labeouf might actually start giving good performances.

Exactly. This and the Lawless trailer reveal that he’s been given something more to do than run around and tell jokes. The trailers suggest that he’s got better acting skills than he’s previous movies have shown. Anyway both movies are looking good so far judging by the trailers.

As with all Robert Redford movies , I will be buying the DVD. This movie certainly seems topical for todays audience.

Robert Redford continues to make provocative, challenging films, whether starring in them, directing them or producing them, or any comibination of the above. For decades his voice has been the one sure conscience in the wilderness to remind us of who we are as human beings and why films make a difference.

Let’s glorify criminals ! This story is about the glorification of SDS weatherman Rick Ayers and Bernadine Dhorn , both criminals who should rot in jail!

Good movies are sometimes rejected by those who dismiss truths and consequences. On knowing how life and lives of those willing to express them.

Thank you for those willing to take the plunge; but, especially those willing to look them straight in the eyes and say “YES” to those movies.

Did you know this is about the 3 men they murdered? Why do they become heroes in a movie, because Redford wants them to be that. He said in his morning show interview/……I guess you have to be radical sometimes to get something done. Oh, really….and killing 3 people….is that radical enough for you, Mr. Redford?

I am so looking forward to seeing this movie…the title alone intrigues me…we have all been told by our parents to be careful of who we associate with….now we have evidence of what could be….hmmmm

How about making a film about how these 2 anti war criminals killed 3 innocent people, 2 war veterans and a policeman. I jsut saw Bodine on t.v. making a statement after her release, saying (not quoting)….”she wishes the others still in prison were out, were w/her now, and free again”. Well, Ms. Bodine, how about the families of those you murdered? Do you think they wish their loved ones were here? I have a hard time believing that a person who murdered 3 people is out on the sts and has just been accepted as a professor at Columbia Univ. What has happened to our morals and ethics?

I for one will not be watching this movie. Use to think Redford was a great actor/producer and just generally a good guy. Needless to say not anymore.
It is time Hollywood quit glorifying criminals.

Disgusting to glorify those who kill people in pursuit of their own utopia. Unfortunately we have to deal with this hypocrite (Redford) here in Utah on a consistent basis.

Saw the film yesterday. without commenting on the morals of the characters, I found the film stretched out and dragged along too slowly in many places. It sometimes made it hard to concentrate.

Growing up in Madison, WI in the 60′s when the campus was bombed this does resonate. Looks like an excellent film!

Geesh, Robert Redford used to be one of my favorite actors. However, a movie to glorify those 60′s dissidents that bombed people, coming out right after the Boston Marathon bombings. Bad idea, bad timing, and well Redford-you’re too much of a radical for me now. I will take a pass.

Having lived through the 60′s I find that glorifying the killing of law enforcement, innocent people and the bombing of public buildings, just doesn’t do it for me. The people they killed and maimed and the buildings they destroyed don’t deserve a movie review, let alone a movie. Gee, can we give the radical left some more ideas..I’ll pass on this one.

I believe to really appreciate a movie like this you need to have been alive during this time. Then as now, you have people who believe in the government side of things, and those who don’t. The difference is those who actually do something about it. Like a battlefield in a illegal and immoral war, people will die. The sorry truth is that we never learn from our past.

Shame on Redford for trying to make us feel sympathic toward monsters. The world would be a better place if the W.U. had blown itself up instead of innocent people.

Oh, by the way. My cousin, the late Congressman Wayne Owens, was a close friend Redford and I’m sure he would disapprove.
