[UPDATE: The Community season 6 trailer is here – watch it above!]
The road to six seasons (and maybe a movie?) for Community has been a bumpy one indeed. Basically, the community college comedy series has had to fight for its survival from the very beginning. Every season, its tepid (or worse) ratings meant it was on the precipice of cancellation. Season 3 saw creator and showrunner Dan Harmon fired, season 4 saw Chevy Chase quit, and season 5 saw not only Harmon’s return and Donald Glover’s exit, but the show’s cancellation on NBC.
But as Community had so many times before, it survived against all odds and was ultimately picked up by Yahoo! Screen for a sixth season. Since that time, we’ve seen a teaser trailer, we’ve seen images – with new cast members – we’ve heard Chevy Chase return rumors, and so much more. Unfortunately, Yvette Nicole Brown won’t be returning (she left the show to take care of her ailing father), but the show will go on.Still, what about a real trailer? With the show’s release less than a few weeks out, you might think we’d see some actual footage from the show before too long. UPDATE: And it’s now online, complete with the parody angle (riffing on the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron) suggested by the title card released for the season (reading “Community: Age of Yahoo”).
Community, of course, is known for riffing on all manner of movie genres – or, indeed, specific movies. They’ve parodied everything from zombie movies to Die Hard to John Woo to The Lord of the Rings to The Hunger Games to My Dinner with Andre to Goodfellas to Star Wars to Sergio Leone movies to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to Apollo 13 to Glee and so on and so forth. In fact, it got to the point where the show was so dedicated to doing “movie of the week” episodes that I sort of lost interest, but maybe that was just me.
The “Community: Age of Yahoo” image could mean that one of the upcoming episodes will be heavily focused on superheroes – indeed, maybe it’s even a full-on parody of The Avengers – or the trailer could just be made to look like that. And then again, it could just be a funny marketing angle. We’ll have to wait to find out.
What say you, Screen Ranters? Are you looking forward to season 6 of Community? Are you hoping for a season 7 or should this one be the last? Drop us a line in the comments.
Community season 6 – starring Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, Ken Jeon, Keith David, and Paget Brewster – will begin streaming March 17th, 2015 on Yahoo! Screen.
