Community Cast Season 4 Community Renewed for Season 5 Will Chevy Chase Return?

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, five gol-Dean seasons! That’s right Greendale students, the unthinkable has happened. After taking longer than expected to return for season 4, NBC is bringing back Community for season 5.

Ratings from last night’s season finale were impressive enough for executives to turn their heads (it matched American Idol in the under 35 demographic) and give Community at least one more semester on NBC.

Right now there’s a question as to just how many episodes this fifth season will have, but Vulture says there should be at least 13 episodes, just like this past season. This would take us to the graduation of the rest of our favorite study group, since the finale last night saw both Jeff (Joel McHale) and Pierce (Chevy Chase) graduate from Greendale. After all, we can’t just leave Troy (Donald Glover), Abed (Danny Pudi), Annie (Alison Brie), Britta (Gillian Jacobs) and Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) at school, can we?

Chevy Chase Community Community Renewed for Season 5 Will Chevy Chase Return?

Considering the tension between Chase and the series writers and executive producers which resulted in the actor’s premature departure from the show, there’s a good chance that Pierce won’t be back at all next season. Did everyone notice how the episode which dove into the study group’s origin story sparsely featured Pierce? Even the end sequence in the yogurt shop didn’t show his face, just his body flailing on the ground. That’s because the finale was shot out of order, and nothing drastic had to be done to explain Pierce’s absence. And now that he’s finally graduated, he can be gone for good.

However, will fans think this is good news? Community season 4 was under the reign of new co-showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port, and many fans felt that, at points, it just didn’t seem up to par with previous seasons. There were a few episodes that really worked; however, that was likely due to veteran writers handling the scripts. Still, it can’t hurt to hope for the best and see what happens next season.

    • The movie should just be a game paintball.

  2. That’s great to hear, love the show! Don’t care much for Pierce though, found him kinda annoying throughout the show so I can make do.

    • I will agree that this season was far inferior to the previous ones.

    • heard hes not coming back for season 5

  3. Yes!! Great news. Chevy Chase has already checked out so they need to just move on without him. NBC didn’t do the show any favors this year, broadcasting the shows three months later than they should have. Let’s see what they can do with one more full season, broadcast at the correct time.

  4. Please, NBC, just let it die. I used to love the show. But why would anyone think that another season would be any better than this last horrific one? I suffered through this last one, hoping it would return to its former glory, but if it comes back for a 5th season, I won’t be tuning in. It’d be like watching a puppy get tortured.

    • So don’t tune in. There, your problem is solved. You’re welcome!

    • seriously? it reallly wasnt that bad, not the best but it was a great season for bringing the group closer. it was all character development. clearly you arent a fan of the show.

    • seriously?? Season 4 was great and they have 2 more coming plus a movie!

    • The fourth season wasn’t as great because they sacked Dan Harmon, but now that they’re bringing him back, season five should restore Community back to the shining example of comedy television.

  5. Either Community goes on with Chevy or just stops. His character is my favorite.

  6. IGN has just reported that Community has been renewed. http://m.ign.com/articles/2013/05/11/community-renewed-for-season-5

  7. Haven’t seen any episodes since season 2 here but good news I guess.

Just got a tinge of disappointment since I just found out Vegas has been cancelled.

  8. I’m happy Community is getting another season, I just hope that the growing pains that the show experienced without Dan Harmon will have worked themselves out and next season will be a return to form…
Also, I’m thrilled Parks & Recreation will also be back because with 30 Rock ending it took the spot of my favorite tv comedy.

  9. Maybe he’ll Chang his mind and come back?

  10. This season did suck without Dan Harmon at the helm but I hope a full season will help restore the show to it’s former glory.

  12. HAZZAH!! This is the BEST NEWS this fellow #humanbeing could hear!! I hope they get Fred Willard to replace Chase. #poppop #coolcoolcool #sixseasonsandamovie #greendale #community #deantastic #troyandabedbackontv #anniesboobs #changdynastyforever

    • # Anniesboobssssss

  13. During the first 3 seasons it was the best show on TV. I had very low expectations for season 4, but i was pleasantly surprised with it. It wasnt on par with the first 3, but definitely a solid show still. Six seasons and annies boobies!!!!

  14. love this show

  15. Back in the day, when a horse broke his leg, they would put him out of his misery because nothing could be done. I wish we were back in the day and the horse, Community.

I has become, WORST SHOW EVER.

    • Are you kidding me? Did you watch any of the latest season at all? It wasnt as good as the others, but I dont know how you could say its the worst show on television. Maybe one or two poor episodes, but almost all of them made me laugh and I enjoyed seeing these characters more. So did basically all of the other Community fans out there. That is why its being picked up for a 5th season.

      • HA… the fact that you defend the latest season does not do your opinion any favors. Rapid decline of a show is the saddest thing. I hope it’s gone before season five airs…. to me out of my misery.

        • The defense of season 4 IS my opinion, though. And like ‘The Avenger’ said below, “average” or even “poor” Community is better than most other shows “best”. It is smart, clever, and witty. So, sour lemons, did you even watch season 4?

          • I’m with Traps. Although this season had its disappointing moments, I thought the last few episodes were great. Considering how worried I was about season 4, I was pleasantly surprised.

  16. Wow, I think people are overreacting about season 4. Yeah, it wasn’t that good, but Community’s “not so good” is still a fair share better than most other American comedies’ “best”.

As for Chevy Chase, I actually hope he comes back – but only if he wants to. They handled his absence very poorly in season 4. He should either be back on the show full-time, and enjoy his job; otherwise he should just leave for good. No one wants that kind of awkwardness when watching the show, and I can only imagine how it must be for the cast and crew – having to work with someone who pretty much said he doesn’t have any respect or love for his job.

Any-which-way, I’m thrilled the show got another season. 6 seasons and a movie!

  17. Season 4 had some great bits and some awkwardly unfunny bits but overall still hit notes that no other show comes close to. Community just seems to have a unique vibe to it (maybe the whole meta element helps) but maybe that’s just me.

Biggest disappointment of the season was the paintball, could’ve been awesome but seemed kinda rushed and paled in comparison to previous paintball eps.

I really hope Chevy doesn’t come back tbh, I think the group works better without him and he became such a cliched 1-joke caricature it was painful to watch.

I would like Dan Harmon to come back though :)

  18. Did anyone notice in the finale when Jeff was graduating that the chalkboard said Six Seasons and a Movie?

  19. I won’t lie: I read this whole post in Dean Pelton’s voice…

  20. Even though i dont think it will happen the show to me flows better when one season consists of 20 or more episodes like seasons 1-3. Then it doesnt seem rushed like season 4 felt and obviously theres more episodes. More episodes means more opportunities to watch Community. But it doesnt make sense now that everyone is only a semester away from graduating.

STILL HAVE MORE THAN 13 EPISODES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. With the show’s ability to work in scifi storylines via Troy and Abed, I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t do six seasons and a movie. They could get stuck in an alternate reality or battle the evil timeline. Fingers crossed. Community is the best show ever. Every episode has been amazing.

  22. I dony care if Perce was annoying. He became apart of the show and the study group im going to miss Chevy chase

  23. As im from uk this shiw wasnt as popular. I watched a marathon of series 1 to 4 loved them all.
Will miss Peirce with his gay comments!! Typical british humor…
Looking forward to next series :)

  24. I personally love the show and have watched every episode! Last season wasn’t the best but its better than no community I think. And I believe that pierce was/is the best part of the show no questions asked! He was so funny and racist and clueless!I hope bw will be in season 5!
