This week NBC brought good news for fans of their new shows, when they gave full season orders to Revolution, Go On and The New Normal. But now the network has bad news for fans of a couple returning comedy series.

Today the peacock network announced that they would be delaying the season premieres of both Community and Whitney from their original scheduled air date of October 19th, and did not offer alternate return dates.

TV Line has a statement from NBC saying:

Given the success we’ve had for the past four weeks – including winning the first week of the season in [the] A18-49 [demographic] – we’ve decided to continue to concentrate our promotional strength on our new NBC shows that are scheduled Monday through Wednesday and have therefore decided to hold ‘Community’ and ‘Whitney’ from their previously announced premieres of October 19th.

Without having to launch these comedies on Friday at this time, we can keep our promotion focused on earlier in the week — plus we will have both comedies in our back pocket if we need to make any schedule changes on those nights. When we have a better idea of viewing patterns in the next few weeks, we will announce new season premieres of ‘Whitney’ and ‘Community.’

Whitney, learning that the season 2 premiere of her show has been delayed.

Now that end part does sound a bit suspicious – considering the already shortened 4th season of Community and its seemingly inevitable cancellation – but this might also be good news. Both comedies had been moved to Fridays, which doesn’t usually work out for shows (Fringe being the most recent exception to the rule). However, this statement seems to indicate that if schedule changes need to be made, likely with low-rated comedies like Animal Practice and Guys with Kids, these two shows could take their place on Wednesdays.

Either way, it’s sad news that the new semester of Community – and the second season of Whitney – won’t be coming as soon as fans expected.

Brie Larson

However, there’s good news for Community, as TV Line also has word that Brie Larson (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 21 Jump Street) will guest star in season 4. Larson will appear in the seventh episode of the season, where Dean Pelton is holding a “Sadie Hawkins” dance at school. However, details on her character are currently being kept secret. Could she cause a love triangle between any of our would-be study group romances? We’ll have to wait and see.

Stay tuned to find out when Community and Whitney will return.

  1. NBC…my beautifully idiotic nemesis! They hook me with a new sitcom about a sarcastic veterinarian with a monkey along with teaming the classic hilarity of Matthew Perry with the brilliance of Brett Gelman and then continue to wooo me with the return of Parks and Rec, 30Rock, and better episodes (than last season) of the Office and now the pull this shenanigan! Why must you play games with Community! Why? KHANNNNNNNNNNNN!

But feel free not to ever air season 2 of Whitney.

  2. Why are you trying to punish us NBC?

    • NBC is more than pathetic. They are the epitome of Corporate Cowards.
They lack the courage to tell the truth, that they want to cancel
“Community” because it’s actually intelligent and not dumb down TV like their other shoes. So they come up with a pathetic lie about “How great their other shows are”. Yes, and “The check is in the mail”, and
“I’ll respect you in the morning”, and “I own a bridge in Brooklyn that I’d like to sell to you”. NEWS FLASH – NBC Executives – We can all see through your blatantly transparent lie. You’re fooling no one. Why don’t you just sell the rights to Community to a station that really would like to air it, such as The Comedy Channel. Commmunity doesn’t belong on a brain dead, zero creativity Corporate lowest common denominator hack channel like NBC, because it shows up how pathetically idiotic all the other NBC shows are… So relieve yourself of the problem, by selling the rights of the show to The Comedy Channel, and thus you’ll fulfill the only thing you care about in life anyway, which is making money. — PROBLEM SOLVED. :)

  3. GOD DAMMIT NBC… I really hate you right now.

  4. This is all Jack Donaghy’s fault !

    • Tank it and rebuild from the rubble.

  5. Damnit NBC…you are morons, in every sense of the word. Yes please pelt me with more Chicago Fire and Animal Practice Ads. I’m sure eventually my mind will change and I will feel the need to watch them

Also Whitney got a second season?

  6. There is nothing sad about Whitney getting delayed. How that show got a second season I will never know. But shelving Community until a later date is horrible. Oh well, we’ll get it at some point.

  7. Wonderful.

    Believe you will love it.

  8. Whitney got renewed, wow…….

  9. NBC is the devil…

  10. This isn’t necessarily bad news, everyone. They could have just let the shows air on a friday night starting well after the other premieres have aired and let them go, but they’re saving them, which shows they might have more confidence in them then their other shows. Now they might transfer to another night (like the article suggests), probably at the beginning of next year when 30 Rock is over and some of their new shows have been cancelled, which would lead to better ratings and a better chance at the back 9 order.

  11. FFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!! Give me Community already! None of NBC’s other shows this season are as good except maybe Go On. As a Fringe fan I was excited for Revolution and hoped it would be good. The idea of the show is very intriguing but it suffers from fairly poor writing and acting. With The Office on the way out, we need Community to keep that comedy block going. Poor decisions on NBC’s part.

  12. NOOOOOOOO! I need Community back! Just cancel Animal Practice and Chicago Fire (huge downgrade for Jesse Spencer anyway) and put Community and Go On back-to-back. This would be a winning combo on ANY night (you could pair Whitney with Guys with Kids, both are promising premises with rocky starts, if one gets better it’ll benefit both, plus the loyal will crossover to either show).

  13. The only upside i can see to this is that when it does return, it may get a better time slot than friday night. Thats the death slot.

But seriously NBC, why are you trying to find excuses to cut this show. The reason it hasnt been doing well the lsat few seasons is because it’s been sharing the time slot with The Big Bang Theory, the other nerdy sitcom on tv. Give it Tuesday or Monday and ratings will double

  14. I couldn’t care less about Whitney, but I’ve gotten hooked on Community and I want to see new episodes NOW dammit!!

I’m guessing since it’s being delayed in the US, it’ll be delayed everywhere else in the world too right? – Would be awesome if the network would still allow the show to be aired in other countries without delay… like South Africa.

  15. NBC is the opposite of batman!!!

    • you don’t even know what that means

      • NBC is Brita-ing this show. Bring it back!!!

        • ahaha yes!

  16. NBC is streets behind!!!

It’s to bad Sony hates Netflix Streaming otherwise I wish they could work out a deal to air Community.
From what I’ve heard there will be episodes built around Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas so this will Britta things up pretty bad.
It feels like NBC saw the premire of 30 Rock and thought Jack’s idea could actually work.

  18. NBC has become a joke the past year. Bringing us sub-par comedies while damaging the ones worth watching. They’ve also proved how bad they are at Politics when MSNBC has become easily the most biased news network out there. Doctoring footage and audio to try to sway things in the direction they want it. Instead of reporting th facts, they use the only parts they like.

NBC is a joke, and don’t think I want to give it any room on my television set anymore. Community is going to be cancelled mid-season (if this postponing of the new season and the hiatus last year are any indication), so I’m not really going to be too hurt by denying my tv the “professionalism” of NBC.

  19. I don’t know which hurts more, the fact that Community constantly gets underestimated by NBC and has gotten delayed and possibly at risk of cancellation or that they got delayed because of Animal Practice, a show that doesn’t even deserve the Friday slot (usually the death sentence of show) and yet it got the Wednesday slot (much better than the Friday slot).
