On behalf of IESB, Christina Radish interviewed Feige and got some more details out of him. One of the questions asked was about Zak Penn and the status of his Avengers script, to which Kevin replied:

“It’s great. We’re learning as we go. It’s a new thing. Jon clearly is enthusiastic about it. Ken Branagh is enthusiastic about it. Joe Johnston is just getting into the mix now, on Captain America. The screenwriters have conference calls amongst themselves, in terms of what we’re doing. Sometimes we’ll change something. We’re not going to lock ourselves into something. No, if it doesn’t work for the movie we’re making, we shuffle it. I call them and go, ‘Remember that thing I told you about? We’re not doing it.’”

Next, Feige was asked about setting up elements of the Avengers movie in the solo films that come first, starting with the first Iron Man (where we met Nick Fury and were introduced to S.H.I.E.L.D.) He replied that they are in constant communication and that what they’re doing isn’t new (it’s done in the books all the time) but that it’s on a drastically different scale.

Will we see other supporting characters featured in the Avengers movie from the Marvel mythos? Kevin says “Probably a few, yeah.”

IESB’s interview also touched on the importance of signing Sam L to a long-term multi-picture contract to maintain the continuity of the films, as he does in his important role in the Ultimate Marvel comics universe. Similarly, Scarlett has a contract with options for follow-up movies, and her appearance in the Avengers movie will depend on what the fans want come time for that.

As for Captain America, they already have artists working up some concept images and prep is set to begin this October. We can expect casting decisions in the next few months.

So, with all these hints from the discussions scattered everywhere in different interviews, who will be on the roster for the Avengers?

Well, in an interview with io9, Feige was asked this and he responded:

“I think we know. I think it’s going to be Iron Man and Thor, Captain America and Nick Fury. I think it’s safe to assume that there will be some members of the Hulk universe in the film as well. In terms of the additional I think Black Widow, sure. The SHIELD organization for sure. What’s exciting, for me, about The Avengers movie is seeing those four characters interact with each other. I think anywhere from the first issues of The Avengers to Civil War the dynamic between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark is just awesome, it’s fascinating. It brings out sides in others that won’t be brought out in the other franchises. Going forward with the mix is a whole other thing, I think it will be cool. So to pile on another 15 or 10, frankly more than four would be too many.”

Fury’s involvement is necessary but I hope the field battle is left to the core team of superheroes. For that reason, I think Hulk’s involvement is very important, but again this seems to be the unclear and worrisome topic from all of these interviews.

The following question from io9 touched on this by directly asking the producer if Hulk would be in the Avengers. In response, Feige only said “Zak Penn is outlining it as we speak, so we’ll see.”

I think they did a fantastic job of storytelling with last summer’s Hulk film and they made it fit into the universe perfectly. Despite the reports and rumors of Ed Norton having disputes with Marvel over that movie’s production, he did a great job as Bruce Banner and I’d love to see him interact with Tony Stark and Steve Rogers and Nick Fury among others. That would also hopefully kickstart a solo sequel for the big green man.

Of the slate of Marvel films coming up, Iron Man 2 of course hits theaters first on May 7, 2010. The following summer, Thor opens May 20, 2011 and The First Avenger: Captain America opens July 22, 2011. Last but not least, we have the Avengers kicking off the following summer, May 4, 2012.

  1. I wouldn’t write-off the Ant-Man movie at all. Being written and directed by Edgar Wright earns my confidence. He did co-write and direct Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz after all. Also I would prefer to have Greg Kinnear play any incarnation of the character.

  2. Not only would I write it off for being Ant man, but Edgar Wright writing and directing it I would really have to write it off.

  3. Thor, Cap & Iron Man must be in it. I think it could work with just those three. I could also see them adding two members. Namely Ms. Marvel and Black Panther. I wouldn’t want to see any more than 5 main members because there just wouldn’t be enough screen time for all the heroes and the villains to cram into one movie (unless it’s made in 2 parts or something).

  4. @ jsm1970,

I can see them adding Ant-Man and Wasp.

There was that rumor of Eva Longoria reading up for Wasp and we know Ant-Man will eventually be made – perhaps he’ll be introduced here and get his solo after.

We could get some more of the newer Avengers like Black Panther who will also be getting his own solo flick eventually.

It’s exciting that this is actually happening and I look forward to Captain America announcements soon – they better not delay that!

  5. i will see the avengres so the avengres cast are john cena robert downey jr. don cheadle chris hemsworth simon pegg eva longoria edward norton scarlett johasson and samuel l. jackson i love them so much i can’t what to see the avengres so i will see the avengres in theatres may 4th 2012 see ya.

  6. Did you seriously just say John Cena?

  7. Shhhhhhhhhhhh Daniel, in his mind John Cena is a good actor and already got cast as Cap. Don’t wake him up from his dream lol

  8. ROFL @Daniel & Oscar

  9. :)

  10. i like what vid say’s an avengers movie must have cap thor and ironman, blackpanther & ms marvel would be awesome members but please not the hulk because he is boring & can’t speak very well anyway. thor captain america ironman are the most coloful appealing interesting charasmatic members in the avengers lineup. have the avengers fight the masters of evil and the lava men in future avengers movies 2 3 & 4

  11. Thor is all about myth and faith. Iron-Man is about science/technology. Captain America is about pride and being selfless, while The Hulk is all about doing what you want when you want. all are contradictions and would make for a great team movie, since it seems likely they’d all be at each others throats.

  12. Thor is all about myth and faith, Iron-Man is all science/ technology, Captain America is pride and being selfless, while The Hulk is about inner rage and doing what you want when you want no matter the consequences…
All these characters seem to be conflictive, which would make for a great team plot, since they’re all more then likely to spend the movie at each others throats.
Hulk is deffinately the key component in this conflict/ resolution, without this character the movie is destined to be a buddy-buddy team movie with minimal internal conflict amongst the Avengers. For this to work properly, Nick Fury needs to have minimal screen time and be more of a Charlie (from Charlie’s Angels) which leaves room for a Nick Fury spin-off.

  13. I agree on the Nick Fury thing, Matias.

On Thor though, they said it would be based on some sort of science, whatever that means.

  14. All these franchises are going to be ****** up like the Spiderman franchise. I`m sorry, but if they make the same mistakes they made in almost all other superhero franchises i`ve seen, then I just can`t get excited about these films. Unless they can make a properly-resorted story with the characters being adapted to the villains. But maybe someday a new superhero comic book company will be opened up. I suggest they don`t use any of the villains too early like what they did with Spiderman.

  15. its cool that black panther irpn fist and ant man are finally getting a bigger name in the marvel film industry and the thor rumors i cant wait to see its trailer much less the moie that is if it happens
