[Update: Check out video of the Marvel Panel!]
Arguably the most anticipated presentation of Comic-Con 2010, the Marvel Studios panel takes place today at 6pm in Hall H. It is of course the real introduction to Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America.
Screen Rant was present in the first row to give you the live coverage and share with you all of the major announcements. Check out what happened play-by-play and how we, the fans, were introduced to Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner.
Panel
Geoff Boucher (LA Times) is moderating. Kevin Feige, Marvel president of production first introduced. Boucher asks him to talk about Thor and Captain America.
- Feige says there was some skepticism that this could happen back when they announced the line-up of films 2 years ago. At end of this panel, he promises that skepticism will be gone.
-
Captain America
The panel tarted with a Captain America vignette loaded with 1941 World War 2 footage. It featured text talking about meeting the first Avenger, overlayed with shapes and colors of Captain America’s shield.
- Silhouette of Captain America shown, then we got quick glimpse of Chris Evans in full costume turning towards camera.
- After the Cap logo is shown, we get quick scene of Captain America whipping the shield at the camera.
Panelists come on stage include Feige, director Joe Johnston, Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving who of course, plays the Red Skull.
- Chris Evans says he started on set 5 days ago. He says it’s been fantastic, he loves the suit and crew.
- Evans says they started early to get his feet wet.
- Evans asked about not knowing much about character and he joked about audience having feelings on that. At end of day, he’s bringing a character of the Marvel family to life and he approaches it like other roles to do the character justice.
- Evans is ripped.
- Johnston reveals he’s a big fan of the Brubaker Captain America.
- Feige explains Evans hasn’t shot any scenes yet of him in costume. What we saw was from the costume sets. The costume works for the 1940s period and borrows from the variations of the Cap costume in Marvel Comics history.
- Evans asked about bringing Marvel characters together. He says he loves the origin stories coming first so we can learn all about him and we don’t have to end the story after he becomes the hero and we can continue with the character and experience his evolution.
- Weaving asked about playing another character wearing a mask that conceals his face. He’s had one day in the mask already and he says it’s an “extraordinary” look.
- Feige says they’ve only show 8 days and he references back to when Sam Raimi first showed the one scene of Peter Parker being bit by spider in the panel for the first Spider-Man movie after only a few days of shooting., years ago and then asks if we want to see a scene from the movie, even though it as the time code still on it. Crowd goes nuts.
Captain America Footage:
Scene with Hugo Weaving pre-scar searching for Odin’s Jewel with a Nazi contingent. His voice and accent are awesome and the aesthetic and tone is very Indiana Jones. It looks good and it ends with Red Skull showing his intelligence and finding the hidden jewel which fires out a very bright glow at Weaving’s character.
Thor
Kenneth Branagh was just introduced on stage! He explains he wasn’t too familiar with American comics. He knew Batman and Spidey but he was very interested in Thor, from its story to its name. “It completely captured (his) imagination.”
- Clark Gregg, Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Kat Dennings, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth all introduced. Fans are loving it.
- Hemsworth is asked about his relationship with father character, Anthony Hopkins’ Odin. Nothing but praise and excitement.
- Portman was asked about her character and she explains she enjoys playing Foster since she’s not well-defined in the books – they can add new colors to her character, so to speak. She also likes the idea of being a scientist that doesn’t follow the Hollywood “cleavage with eyeglasses” type of scientist often portrayed in films.
- Kat Dennings talks about Darcy, a character not from the books who in the movie, is Jane Foster’s assistant of sorts. She’s awkward on stage.
- Tom Hiddleston talks about playing Loki, who he describes as the “agent of chaos” and the “damaged younger brother” who’s overlooked and full of jealously. He says Loki is the character who could of done it but wasn’t chosen to – overlooked as Thor is chosen because, as he jokingly described, “has the bigger guns.”
- Clark Gregg described as the “glue of the Marvel Universe.” He says he loves it, that’s the glue to be.
- Gregg talks about with Iron Man 2, how they quickly threw in the mention of his character, Agent Coulson, leaving to go to New Mexico. He asked why and they responded “hasn’t anyone told you? Thor!”
Thor Footage:
- Wow. Where to start. We get to see glimpses of everything and the footage should turn the opinion of skeptics of stills released over the last few weeks.
- Scenes include Frost Giants, lots of shots of Asgard, of the whole land and interiors. We get shots of Sif, The Warriors Three, Loki, and pretty much every key character of Asgard you can think of.
- On Earth, we see Thor discovered, see him interrogated by Agent Coulson after breaking out and taking out all of the guards.
- We see lots of combat, including a few moves of Thor with the hammer.
- There’s lots of Odin, him banishing Thor to Earth, him dying as Asgard looks to Loki to lead the land.
- Conversations between Jane Foster and Thor touch on what they consider Mythology is actually science but that in Asgard, it’s a combination of both.
- At least two shots showed Thor with his helmet.
- One of the final shots is the Destroyer suit in the middle of the desert confronting a bunch of SHIELD agents, led by Agent Coulson. Clark Gregg is really stepping it up and his character is both funny but stern when need be. He’s become an integral part of Marvel shared movie universe.
One of the audience members asked about Edward Norton (he led up to the question by asking Kevin Feige not to get mad) until he was muted. They explain the usual, that Hulk is bigger than an actor and that he will live on. Feige hints that the panel is not over yet…
- When he first got the role, Hemsworth read a ton of comic books, Norse mythology.
- Audience member asked about hope for Marvel Studios bringing out the R-rated properties and points to his Punisher shirt. Feige says Frank Castle says Frank Castle (Punisher) is back under the roof of Marvel and that they want to bring him back into the fold “shortly.”
- They’re showing us the footage again and the panelists are coming to the floor to watch it with us.
The Avengers
- Just when you thought it was all over (we really didn’t) Feige asked crowd if they mind staying for a bit and we were shown an Avengers video of the logo narrated by Nick Fury.
- Samuel L. Jackson then came on Stage and started introducing members of The Avengers. Agent Coulson, followed by Scarlett Johansson, then Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans; next up was Robert Downey Jr. and you can only imagine the thousands of screaming fans and flashes from the media mob up near the stage.
- Robert Downey Jr. takes stage and talks about Inception being the most ambitious film ever until he realized they’re making The Avengers and that Marvel is bringing all of their top superheroes together for one combined project.
- But that’s not enough… Downey then begins to introduce some very special guests. “playing Clint Barton… Jeremy Renner!” Then, “reprising the role of Bruce Banner” Robert Downey Jr. introduces Mark Ruffalo! The Ruffalo intro had – as you can imagine – more of a mixed reaction.
After coming together front stage for photos and waving to the crowd, the epic cast heads off stage and that ends the Hall H film presentations of Comic-Con 2010.
If you’re into the Marvel vs. DC debate, Marvel blew everything away with this presentation. I’ve never seen so much talent in such a short amount of time. Everyone here is ecstatic.
Update: Now you can see The Avengers for yourself in this video shot by our own Mike Eisenberg!

BTW I heard(rumor) that when ComicCon arrives in NY, the actors who will portray Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne will be presented too!!! Also (NOT A RUMOR),DONALD BLAKE ACTUALLY BE IN “THOR”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Possibly a small reference or cameo.
ulik,
Where did you hear the rumor from?
One of my friends that went to the convention said he asked Kevin Feige about it. The Donald Blake thing was actually recorded with Kenneth Branagh confirming Don Blake being in the film.
It is unfortunate that Ed Norton and company could not iron out their differences. But, the show must go on. Looking at the cast, this movie could work.
I would like to say thank you to Rob Keyes and the rest of the screenrant gang for their excellent SDCC coverage On screenrant and on Twitter you guys made it feel like I was there and believe me I wish I was but this was great as it was. I am looking forward to all of Marvel’s Movies. I have enjoyed all their movies since Blade but I believe the best will be made at Marvel Studios and I hope all their characters will be done by Marvel Studios in the future.
When is the footage coming?? i’d really like to see it soon.. im going away very soon for 2 weeks so i’d like to see it before leaving
haha but if not the oh well..
awesome. now all we need are Wasp and Antman/Giantman and the avengers will be complete.
Ant-man has already been confirmed to not appear in the film.
Ant-Man was NOT DR.HENRY PYM OR GIANT-MAN. “Ant-Man” will have his own film.
Then what’s the deal ulik? Ant-Man was in “Avengers” Vol.1 #1 No one was introduced to play him on the panel @ C.C.
Whedon is very much aware of the need for Hank Pym’s presence in this first Avengers movie because he’s mentioned his awareness of it various times so I doubt that he will just not include the character. It’s just that it’s a possibility that Ant-Man may be in briefly but then Giant-Man may become more of an asset to this particular film. Whedon has joked about Nathan Fillion being Ant-Man at ComiCon but it was just a rumor about Fillion, however Whedon himself being a fanboy,a sincerely doubt he’ll just ignore Pym and Dyne. The other thing is that Pym and Dyne may just show up in supporting roles and or may come through as superheroes at the very end.
So are you figuring a cameo or just a walk on? I guess looking at it from that point of view it could be a surprise that leaves people expecting the Ant-Man movie following “Avengers.” Not a bad scenario really…
I think it’s sad that people can’t give Ruffalo a chance as The Hulk. I’m gonna luagh if he gives a more impressive performance than Norton, then everyone will say he should only play Hulk.
I’m a Mark Ruffalo fan, especially from Shutter Island. He’s a great actor, however I think it’s his voice that is setting people back, not his acting chops. I wish they could’ve just stuck with Bana or Norton imho.
Dunno if anyone was askin it so far but:
does anyone has any idea if the scarlet witch and quicksilver are tied to the x-franchise at fox (being the children of magneto) or if it is possible to see them within the avenger franchise at marvel?
Fox owns *all* mutants so they won’t be in The Avengers. That’s the one major difference between the movie roster and that which we see in the Ultimates books.
Exciting! I want to give Ruffalo a chance, but the constant recasting…Can’t wait for the footage!
Mark Ruffalo ??? I’ve never seen this guy in anything,,,
I can’t tell if you’re serious or not…
Check out Zodiac..it features RDJ as well..hmmm..I wonder was Downey responsible for Ruffalo coming on board?
when can we see footage is no one allowed to record it?
Footage is up now!
Just want to say thanks to Vic, Rob and all of the other folks at ScreenRant for live coverage of Comic-Con 2010. You made me feel like I was there.
@790…
If you’ve never seen Mark Ruffalo in anything, I’d suggest Zodiac, Just Like Heaven (it was very sweet and charming), Reservation Road (he more than made up for the annoying Joaquin Phoenix), My Life Without Me and View From The Top. He turns in some very good performances in all of these movies
Hope this helps.
Thanks so much!
I hope we got the info across well in the quick manner we did. Excuse our (my) typos as I do this live and with sketchy internet, lol.
Oh thanks for that Stephie now I know who Ruffalo is. I remember him in Zodiac. O boy!
^
Sucky choice marvel/dizney!!! He doesn’t look anything like Norton. So in a way I don’t care about Hulk/Banner anymore. They have recast the character so many times now I’m getting the vapors.
Marvel/dizney can bite my continuity and kiss my gritts!
Totally boycotting this release! Argh! Lame!!!!! Smash!!!
Yeah nice job Rob!
I’d love to see some photos of the event. Like maybe a photo thread,,, lots of photos!!!!!
Zodiak was good, dispite having jake whatever his name is in it.
Thanks dude, we have images from the con coming
And, we just added video from this panel
I can’t believe Downey ragged on Norton. That’s a cheap shot.
If he’s so loyal why DIDN’T he stick up for Terrence Howard.
What a choade,,,
exactly 790!!! and choade hahahahah that a word i havent heard in a while
Great line-up….RDJ steals the show again. Can’t wait to see this movie. Also can’t wait for x-men and spider-man rights to revert back to marvel so they can be rebooted and done correctly.
P.S. You’re a choade 790
@ Haggislaw
I think anything mutant is Fox. In X2 when Mystique is hacking into Stryker’s computer, a list of mutant names pop up, one of which says:
Maximoff (2)
I took those 2 Maximoffs to be a reference to Wanda and Pietro (the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver)
Sucks ’cause I want to see her in an Avengers sequel with Vision.
That depends GK333 do you think Downey could have demanded Terrence Howard stay on in Iron Man2?
^
Of course he could,,, he’s their poster boy. (Pun intended),,,
Sure Howard could have pulled a Bale on set or a Norton behind the scenes but whatever the deal, not having him as Rhodes was a distraction for me in IM2…
I hate too sound this way but Cheadle has made a career in Hollywood as the token cast member.
(Read between the lines). He dialed in his performance and looked like a dork in the suit.
Yeah just looking at that picture above with RDJ on the end he seems like he is doing his best Tom Cruise impersonation..
“No you’re the best!! No I’m not the greatest!! No you are!!”
I honestly think there is no depths that Downey wouldn’t sink to to not screw up this Marvel deal he has going and he probably is the poster boy for Marvel…kind of like the teacher’s “pet” so to speak. I can’t really blame him or Marvel considering what they have put on the line since Iron Man…big gambles with big dollars but is there anyone left in Hollywood with any scruples…I think Feige is a big turd…
I’m a little confused about comic con. I could of sworn there was suppose to be a WB panel that was gonna talk about Superman and Batman films a few sites mentioned it before comic con but here we are at the end and not one piece of news that I can find anywhere. Did I miss something?
i didnt notice any WB panel coverage wither man, i wonder what happened
Everyone expected announcements from the DC segment (Green Lantern) of the WB panel – that’s what Johns and others hinted at in the past – but nothing came of it.
No news on Flash, Supers, Justice League or anything which was very disappointing in comparison to what Marvel Studios did.
Disney is the British Petroleum of movie studios. When Marvel sold out to “them” I knew this kind of controlling low balling greed would occur.
Disney has a long history of tainting and or ruining all that they touch…
I certainly noticed their influence on the Iron Man2 script.
It usually takes several days if not a week for Vic and crew to write up all the panel posts.
I had read that the DC panel was uneventful I’m sure we will read more asap,,,
790 I havnt found that to be the case with Vic and screen rant either way I’m not just refering to SR other sites that I’ve seen havnt mentioned it either. I havnt even seen anything from IGN usually they are right there with in the hour.
Well Daniel so far nothing on the DC panel can only mean one thing. There wasn’t much going on,,,,
I remember last year the posts on Comic con were coming out for days after the event.
A quick thought: Is there any chance they might attach some sort of trailer or teaser for Thor with the Iron Man 2 DVD/Blu-ray release? That’s around september, right? Or would that probably be too soon?
I’m quite happy to hear that the footage for Captain America looked pretty good and even happier to hear how well Weaving seems to be doing with the character, though he’s honestly the person I’m least worried about. This is still the film I am the most worried about, mainly with some of the things I’ve heard in regards to the the plot from the director and such. Just have to wait and see I suppose. I do like the enthusiasm I’ve heard from Evans regarding the character.
Thor really sounds to be shaping up and I’ve liked pretty much everything I’ve been hearing, especially with the footage that was shown. I take it everything does look much better in motion with the proper lighting rather than those static shots we saw?
Getting everyone together for The Avengers panel was pretty damn awesome and I actually liked how they managed to introduce Renner, Ruffalo, and Wheden officially and it was just really cool to see them all together. I laughed at how both Johanson and Hemsworth made the same mistake of going behind the table at first before realizing their mistake.
I think they could have done without the “reprising” comment honestly. I feel bad for Ruffalo a bit because of it since he shouldn’t get any flak for aquiring the role. I think he’ll do a good job and wish him luck.
Hopefully they won’t totally screw up The Avengers though. It’d be kind of sad to have that happen.
Good idea Sean I think you just created a brilliant marketing strategy. ^
I would not be surprised to see that implemented on a wider scale, especially on Bluray releases. Epecally on Iron Man2 if Favs and Co are reading this,,, and they should be!
^
Also agree with you on Hugo he’s great in any role…
I would imagine that 2011 will be Warner Brother’s year. Really it’s sad that nothing substantial is addressed or settled or mapped. It’s all open ended. They didn’t talk about where any of the stories are going, what they would like to develop the whole thing into. Why Norton and Marvel couldn’t come to terms. They didn’t even mention anything about look or design issues Marvel history of the stories, how hard the actors worked to get just the look of the characters down. And that seems to be what this show was all about “The Look.” The meet and greet instead of the Meat and potatoes.
Wow RDJ looks very different up there on stage than in recent movies you can barely recognize him from the angle of the picture. Cheadle’s not up there in the picture either, so I guess like Ant-Man he won’t be in “Avengers?” Avengers light, I guess will be the movie title?!
Rob Keyes, learn to write.
no personal attacks here pal, if you dont like posts here, dont read them, pretty basic
Thanks for the comment dude, glad you enjoyed our LIVE 1400 word coverage of the panel done on broken convention internet.

Wow
Nice & entertaining gossip. It seems Comic Con 2010 going to be interesting. Lots of celebrity in one stage and hope this film not going to be junk. Thanks for Share this wonderful post.
