South Park renewal Comedy Central Comedy Central Renews South Park Through 2013

Good news for South Park fans. Despite the show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, becoming the toast of Broadway, they will be continuing the show that has made them household names – for another two years, anyway.

The renewal may come as a bit of a surprise after Parker and Stone hinted that the show might be close to an end during last month’s mid-season finale ‘You’re Getting Old’ – leading many to speculate that when the series returned in the fall, the remaining episodes could be the show’s last.

Additionally, with the duo’s recent haul of 9 Tony Awards  (including Best Musical) for The Book of Mormon, it seemed like South Park would soon be in Parker and Stone’s rearview mirror.

Nevertheless, news came earlier this week when Comedy Central announced the pair had committed to keeping South Park‘s run on the network through 2013 – which, for those who are counting, would be an astonishing 17 seasons.

It’s hard to imagine where other programs would take their characters after nearly two decades, but South Park has the dual benefit of characters who never age, and writers who can pull the funny out of whatever topics happen to be dominating the news.

Unlike other programs (animated or not) where the production schedule requires the script to be written several months in advance – to allow producers, directors and actors ample time to create a finished product – South Park can produce a show practically overnight, which allows Stone and Parker the ability to lampoon events while they are still fresh and topical. Some recent examples include Tiger Woods, Britney Spears and, most recently, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The ability to occupy the frontline of popular culture (and occasionally world news) has allowed South Park to stay on the air for so long, without losing any of its edge.

In their 15 seasons, Stone and Parker have proven themselves more than capable of crafting funny and biting social commentary, which rivals that of their Comedy Central brethren like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and occasionally earns the ire of celebrities, political parties and religious groups, which only serves to increase South Park‘s profile.

It’s safe to say the South Park has become something of an institution, and although no one knows what the future will bring when 2013 rolls around, there will certainly be a grand farewell, should the foulmouthed kids from Colorado make their exit.

South Park returns with seven new episodes, October 5 @10pm on Comedy Central.

  1. The twenty season mark would be a fitting end for the series… let’s just hope they can start making funny episodes again

  2. I am very surprised at this news, the last couple of season, especially the episodes that aired this spring, seemed like they were checking out.

Perhaps biding their time to leave comedy central. Which I was psyched for, because if they moved to an internet format they could do whatever they want, no censors. Can you imagine what they’d do without censors and comedy central stepping in like they have time to time.

  3. Interesting. I agree that this season has had some big ups and downs, but if they can give us a memorable final 2 seasons then I’m all for it. I do, however, think that these guys need to rediscover their roots with the show. It just doesn’t have the same feel as the first 5 seasons IMO.

  4. I’m very surprised by this.

  5. While the wedding episode was brilliant, I have been very disappointed by this season and thought for a while (after the apple episode) they were trying to piss off comedy central to get out of their contract. I am shocked as well

  6. I haven’t seen in ages. What grade are they in this season? They should have graduated from high school by now.

    • 5th or 6th grade…

  7. definitely got to do an end of the world episode in 2012 and something after that.

  8. This certainly has its moments lately, but the seasons are too hit and miss-for every decent one, you get two or three awful eps! Hopefully, they can reach deep into their guts and give us about a dozen more good ones-maybe even a few great ones- before they call it quits, for good!

  9. I hope the show ends with something nery darastic! I have been a fan of this show since I was 11! Now I’m 17 and am still in love with it~! I really want to see what would become of them in there high-school days and adulthood…

There will never be another show like this! Nobode could ever replace it~!

The only thing I really hope they don’t do is sign it over to someone else or change the name…

    I am a southpark girl for life~!

When this show end’s, the SP market is going to go up!!!

I’m going to buy some SP merch…

I am talking to much again…

    Sorry… ^^;

    • Its ok, TheAwesome Me, you dont want to grow up, youre a South Park girl! So, do you look like Wendy, Bebe, Shelly, or Mrs Garrsion?

    • Please attend more of your highschool english classes. Glad you’re a fan but please… class. It’s for your own good.

      • Me? High school English classes? I graduated hi school back before you were a gleam in your daddys eye!

    • THEY CANT STOP SOUTH PARK!!!!!!! ITS MY FAVORITE SHOW!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!! U CANT DO THIS!!!!!! SOUTH PARK IS MY LIFE!!!!!!! IVE BEEN WATCHING IT SINCE I WAS 4yrs OLD!!!! I’M 13 NOW!!!! FIXING TO BE 14!!!!!! DONT STOP!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE KYLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP MAKING SOUTH PARK!!!!!!!!! YOU’RE NOT GETTING OLD!!!!!!!!! YOUR GETTING BETTER!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! I’M YOUR #1 FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • To be honest, my favorite episode is “The Coon”. I love the fact that Kenny is Mysterion!!!! Plus, I think “Super Fun Time” is pretty funny too!!! Not as funny as “You’re getting old, but still pretty funny!!!

  10. The last episode to air, You’re Growing Old, would have been an incredible ending to the series. The last few minutes of that episode were easily the most gut-wrenching in the show’s history.

After that, I’m a bit disappointed that they’re going to keep it going.

    • Yes, it coulda been, but theyre still churning on,,and on,,and ON!

      • No offense brutony, but, they need to keep going!!! South Park is a really funny show!!!! Keep going people!!!! make it better!!! funnier!!! more interesting to watch!!!! i luv it!!!

  11. YES! I was scared for about 2 weeks. I didn’t have time to watch the first runs of the first half of season 15 and I just caught up 2 weeks ago. “You’re Getting Old” scared the living poop (haha if you watched the episode) out of me. I love South Park and for now I can’t live without it. South Park has actually improved my social skills, context skills, and a whole bunch of other skills. The show really did change my life and surprisingly gave me a mature look on our world as it. South Park is also how I can escape the depressing part of reality and just enjoy life for a 30 minutes. I get the episode and MS and TP are giving South Park an actual story-line now it seems. So ridiculous humor meets great story-line instead of just the same ol’ stuff over and over. To me it seems that South Park is just getting a make-over and that the guys will be moving up to the 5th grade even. Anyway I’m so relieved.

  12. at age 25 i am a life long watcher of south park. since around the age of 9 or so, right at the begining of the series and ending of my early childhood, i have watched and judged all episodes through out the years, and ever since the last 2 seasons i could have never got enough… but now all of a sudden the show seems completely different, and im lost with the masses who are still enjoying it as it ever was. but many die hard fans have been agreeing, and notice how the episodes are becoming very different , it is very hard to put in words what i mean, but i feel like the show has taken on a completley different angle, where the events and jokes that take place in every episode have seriously changed, i realize there ideas come form the same places as they always have,(society, politcal, cultural, racial, commercial, religion, even internet..) but now with newer episodes, the way there carried out, seems so sparratic and repetitive at the same time, sometimes now even ridiculous….. i am nearly a life long fan of matt and trey, and i would find it hard for them 2 to believe that todays current southpark is headed in a better direction….. if someone knows what i mean, plz explain

  13. kenny dies in almost every episode, but i still love the fact that you make him die in hilarious ways! ever since i watched the 12th season finale i’ve been inspired to write my own episodes! i’ve already wrote one book, now i’m on the second one!!! i was thinking about mailing them in when i’m done!!!!

  14. KYLE IS MY BOO!!!!!!!!!! I LUV HIM!!!!!!!!! I LUV HIS GINGER HAIR!!!!!!!

  15. Umm not true??

”With South Park renewed through 2016, fans no longer have to worry about the animated comedy returning to television”

    • What’s not true, Mandy?

    • Actually, I’m waiting for Comedy Central to make South Park episodes for 2013. I hope they make these episodes even better than the ones in the past year!

  16. Its been almost SIX months-get on it, Matt n Trey-Im beginning to miss them!

  17. ive been watching southpark since i was 9 i am now 25 and it is as funny as ever. some of their new stuff is some of my fav’s. people that say its not funny anymore must not be watching it at all. southpark is the funniest show ever made!

  18. I love this show good thing it will be staying for a couple of years.
