[Update: Cobie Smulders has been cast as Agent Maria hill in The Avengers]

Samuel L. Jackson let it slip earlier this week that Nick Fury will have a female sidekick in director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers and there’s been a fair amount of speculation since, concerning who the character might be.

It’s now been revealed that the gal in question is none other than S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill, and the current frontrunner to snag the part is actress Cobie Smulders of How I Met Your Mother fame.

Deadline says that Whedon was actually familiar with Smulder prior to her screen testing to play Miss Hill yesterday, and had considered her as a possibility to play Wonder Woman back when he was set to bring the comic book heroine to the big screen. Smulders could be a lock for the part before the weekend is out and will have beaten out the likes of graphic novel movie star Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World) and Morena Baccarin (a veteran of Whedon’s short-lived Firefly), who also tried out for the role.

In the original Avengers comics, Maria Hill was the interim executive director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and known for being an effective but ruthless figure who was more than willing to match wits with any superheroes that messed with her authority (Tony Stark/Iron Man in particular has butted heads with her on more than one occasion).

Here’s how Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment Joe Quesada describes her:

“[Hill] is such a strong personality, she’s like a force of nature and quite frankly, while perhaps not immediately loved by all involved, she’s certainly as strong and imposing a figure as Nick Fury… what’s different is that we aren’t quite clear about her motives.”

Maria Hill to appear in The Avengers Cobie Smulders is the Frontrunner for Maria Hill in The Avengers [Updated]

This announcement doesn’t guarantee that fan favorites like Janet van Dyne/The Wasp , Agent 13/Sharon Carter, or any other potential Avengers female characters won’t be appearing in some form in the film – merely that Hill will be the one calling the shots, right next to Jackson’s Fury.

What do you think of Smulders as Maria Hill?

The Avengers hits theaters on May 4th, 2012

  1. I think she is capable of doing it. She has the looks, the charisma, and the talent for it.

    • I agree. I just don´t like Hill as a character.

  2. It could work but I really wish they would prioritize Jan or Wanda before Hill. But I guess a Maria Hill movie version could make for some interesting interactions and give the movie a little more gray area feel to it and not just that simple air of ‘this is good that is bad, end of story’.

‘Sides, I doubt they’re gonna involve mutants and such so early in the game since the X-men movies are in their own separated universe.

  3. I do apologize for this immature response, but yummy! I know…..I am ashamed of myself.

  4. Cobie Smulders is incredibly gorgeous. Canadian perfection doesn’t get much purer than her.

  5. Woooo! The Avengers is going to be huge! I’ll be going on opening night with all my girls! Hahah.. freakin’ fantastic, can’t wait! Here come the girls! (Girls, Girls, Girls, Girls) OH YEAH BABY!!! :)
treated myself to a thai massage today and am still giggling over the female masseuse’s major fascination by my BIG beautiful butt hahha… It’s mesmerising!

    • ha ha ha, did she offer you a “happy ending’!!!!

  6. I wanted Mary Elizabeth Winstead, but Marvel is notorious for getting the cheapest (money wise) actors.

  7. Ehh, I’m not sure if she is really right, but whatever lol.

  8. Hill was my first guess when the “side kick” rumor hit. I liked her in the comics and having her involved helps make the story more contemporary with the current comics stories.
It also starts laying the ground for a greater depth of characters to put in the eventual “SHIELD/Nick Fury movie.

  9. Now we just need a Carol Danvers/Ms Marvel to round out the hotness on a team of SHIELD female heroes! Here are some ideas for actresses:
    Jeri Ryan
    Alice Eve
    Jamie Presley
    Amanda Seyfried
Stacy Keibler(would be cool if she could act)

  10. So a minor character created by Brian Michael Bendis & David Finch in 2005 gets precedence over two original founding members created by Stan Lee & Jack KING Kirby in 1962.

The “Avengers” film would not be complete without Ant-Man & Wasp.

I really couldn’t care less for the antagonist Maria Hill character. I love reading my “Avengers” “New Avengers” & “Secret Avengers” books, but I am fast losing interest in this film.

    • Maria Hill is not a main character in a movie filled with leading roles, she is just a strong supportive character for Nick Fury and the avengers. Thought I love ant-man and wasp, the movie has a hard enough feat of uniting so many heroes. So they would be best in a sequel for now.

      • @ Yamil Diaz

The problem with waiting and putting them in a sequel is they are FOUNDING members. Ant-man and wasp should have been considered WAY before someone like Hawkeye or some tertiary character like a SHIELD sidekick.

Pym is the scientist in the group (Well, Bruce Banner is also a scientist but his field is much more specific) and is even working for SHIELD under the ‘project avenger’ story (which the movie will obviously based off of). Not including him initially would seem to me to be an opportunity lost with the stage so perfectly set.

He is also a linchpin for many of the great story arcs, especially in the Ultron origin (and the inevitable inclusion of Vision!). Sorry but I am really gunning for the sequel to be about Ultron since Vision is one of my faves ;)

You also speak of a movie filled with leading roles……well Pym does not HAVE to have a leading role but he is a lot more important than Maria Hill to the health of the group.

      • With all due respect Yamil, I would rather see Ant-Man & Wasp as strong supportive characters. They are after all two of the original founding members. :-)

Then again, this film is not inspired by MARVEL’S original “Avengers” source material, but by the alternate re-imagining “The Ultimates” which is a series I don’t care much about. :-(

        • I admit I never fully understood why they decided following the Ultimates story instead of the original was the way to go.

Might have been the way the origin movies came out? Was possibly easier to use a character not directly related to any Avenger (Nick Fury) to link the origin movies together since when Iron Man came out not even Thor had been cast let. Or maybe so they could have a kick butt actor like Samuel L. Jackson involved? Yeah I don’t really know. :P

          • @ mongoose

Yeah I don’t really know either. Whatever their reasons, they are just poor excuses to me. :-)

Like I’ve said in other posts, I certainly don’t believe the tired old argument that the Ultimate universe pushed the limits of super hero comics and raised the bar for comic book storytelling, so therefore these modern alternate re-imaginings are meant to be what attracts the average movie goer.

LOL, the original mainstream MARVEL Universe continues to pave the way, push the boundaries and raise the bar for comic book storytelling. The original flagship titles are still top sellers and they get modernized with every new creative team that comes onboard. :-)

“Avengers”, “Secret Avengers”, “Avengers Prime” & “New Avengers” are proof of that. :-)

            • Very poor excuses.

And whoever said Samuel L Jackson is a badass actor needs professional help, no offense. He is pretty much garbage as an actor now who is just looking for pay checks.

  11. This is not bad. Cobie is awesome. But I dunno how she’s gonna fit in as Maria Hill. I mean Hill is evil. Cobie is adorable. -__-

    • Hill is not evil

  12. I can see her as Hill, I just dont want my 2nd favorite aspect of HIMYM to leave….. and if anyone deserves a shot at Ms.Marvel/Carol Danvers, I say its Yvonne Strahovski

    • Yes, she looks like Ms Marvel, she kicks butt in Chuck, and she’s just so hot.

    • I don’t think she would leave the show. Jason Segel and NPH do movies all the time without leaving the cast of HIMYM.

  13. Not surprised at all Whedon is going for Cobie. She was his ideal choice for Wonder Woman, until Warner Bros. shot him down.

  14. If Cobie gets the part, this young man would like to be “over the Hill”!

  15. She’s the worst part of HIMYM. She’s not very funny on the show so I don’t know what Whedon is thinking here.

  16. Another sign Marvel is trending downward.

    • The Mighty Marvel Merrymen Marching towards Fox Abattoirs & Phony Sony swamplands. :-)

  17. Oh no ;( Please Marvel don’t do it. Hank in Jan’s gotta be in this, surprise us even, but make it so.
