Cobie Smulders Talks Agent Maria Hill’s ‘Avengers’ Costume

The toughest obstacle that director Joss Whedon will have to overcome in bringing The Avengers to life is having to manage such a large cast of characters. The team of superheroes forming The Avengers team is one thing, but there will be a vast supporting cast of characters and a variety of villains rich with history from the Marvel Comics to handle as well. One new character to the movies who will see her introduction in The Avengers is S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill.

Believe it or not, production on The Avengers is about to begin in just a few weeks. It’s actually happening. Many of the superheroes of our childhoods are coming together for the ultimate comic book adaptation, the most ambitious movie ever.

In what may be the first of many Avengers movies, Agent Hill will be played by How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders. Her character will act as an assistant of sorts to Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. At least, to start.

In the Marvel Comics continuity, Hill eventually takes the reins from Fury, becoming the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. We expect that with her contract likely including up to 9 films, she will eventually take charge in the films.

Zap2it was present during production of the season 6 finale of How I Met Your Mother and asked Smulders about her role in The Avengers, to which she responds with a focus on her costume in the film.

“We start in April, which is like… tomorrow. I literally leave here and I go to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to shoot some scenes in a catsuit… I’ve tried on portions of the catsuit [and] I’ve seen conceptual drawings of what they want it to be. It’s fascinating to me. I feel like wardrobe becomes very creative on these types of movies because they literally spend weeks designing just the pants or the emblem. It’s such an all-consuming process, so I’m excited to see how it all turns out.”

What she describes is not dissimilar to the costume of fellow SHIELD Agent Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) from Iron Man 2. Once we actually see the costume we can compare the little details to the comics incarnations of the SHIELD attire, but we expect as with the Marvel Studios films so far, that it will keep very true to the comics.

Here are some images of Agent Maria Hill’s costumes from different series of Marvel Comics which correspond to Smulders’ “catsuit” comparison:

Will Cobie Smulders get a haircut for the part?

  1. I like Smulders, but I still say she’s just wrong for this role. I’m hoping she does good regardless.

    • A lot of people said something like that about Heath Ledger on Joker before the movie came out. You see some people think they are good in choosing who’s the right person to play which role better than the actual casting crew of the production who, well, does it for a living.

      • Maybe so, but I still have the right to an opinion on the casting, and I say she’s not right for the part.

        • True, idiots have the right to their own opinion. Doesn’t mean that idiots are correct. Just sayin’.

  2. “Will Cobie Smulders get a haircut for the part?”

I hope not. She looks just fine as she is. Let the comic book artists draw her looking like a lady instead of a tomboy.

    • eye

  3. So, with short hair girls don’t look like girls? Hey, tell me what the whether is like back in the 1962.

I really can’t wait to see this. Sadly she can’t cut her hair because of the show which sucks as she’ll just look like Black Widow…Hill’s look automatically sets her apart from others in the book.

    • Long hair is considered a feminine feature and a tomboy IS a girl.

  4. Cobie Smulders is incredibly gorgeous. Canadian perfection doesn’t get much purer than her. I hope she does more mainstream movies from now on and begins her ascension to the A-list.

  5. Please don’t cut your hair, you look amazing with it!

    I’m surprised Zap2it didn’t ask that.

  6. “Agent Hill, Haaaave you met Cap?”

I’m with everyone else on this, are we gonna go through a season of HIMYM with a short haired Robin?

So we get to see Scarlett AND Cobie in catsuits and girls can see Evans and Hemsworth..eyecandy for everyone!

    • wear a wig??

  7. Also….CATSUIT UP!!!

    :P sorry I couldn’t resist

    • Nice one.

  8. Why a haircut? Can’t she just go for a really tight braid?

  9. Joe Quesada stated that filming has already begun

    • That was an offshoot remake in the Newsarama video. It hasn’t begun principal photography yet. The sets and crew are setting up in New Mexico undoubtedly though.

  10. Cut the hair.

    • Don’t cut the hair!

  11. I always hated Hill… She’s a freaking cow…

  12. She “catsuited” up! Haha!

  13. I don’t think she should cut her hair. No woman looks “great” with short hair (some of em looks OK but not great). Keep it long – the people won’t mind that she doesn’t look exactly like the comic-version. Also, try to imagine Cobie with short hair… it’s just wrong…

P.S. She won’t look like Black Widow, Scarlett Johanson looks totaly different than Cobie Smulders.

  14. I am predicting a baby oiled cat fight btwn Black Widow and M. Hill to pass the time when the Avengers are in the Quinn Jet flying to trouble spots. Or that could be my fantasy interwoven in the script…

  15. I say cut the hair. Cobie looks better with long hair, yes, but the short hair is Maria Hill’s signature look. Just my opinion.

  16. She used literally in every other sentence! HAHAHA

I find it sad that a lot of people won’t get that! xD

  17. Cut the friggin hair.. wear a wig during HIMYM. Plenty of people do it.

  18. DO NOT cut Cobie’s hair! Will ruin her sex appeal, and I maintain that no woman looks good with hair like that. Even Audrey Hepburn and suchlike. They can survive with her hair the way it is– even tying it back or something. Just for GOD’S sake don’t cut it!! D:
