Cloverfield Advanced Screening

Published 7 years ago by , Updated February 9th, 2012 at 9:54 pm,

[UPDATE: Well, I was going to hold off on the review until Friday, but I’m sure Paramount won’t mind a spoiler-free positive Cloverfield review.]

I’ll be sitting down to watch the long awaited Cloverfield movie in about 2 1/2 hours. I’ve promised Paramount that I wouldn’t publish my review until Friday, but after I see it I will be updating this post to at least give you the thumbs up or thumbs down on it.

Cloverfield has been the recipient of a monster (pun intended) viral marketing campaign and as my buddy John points out at The Movie Blog, there is the possibility that this could end up being another Snakes on a Plane. If you recall that film generated a TON of online buzz (not much in the “real” world, though) and it ended up tanking big time at the box office.

Having said that, I think this is a different case: This is more of a mainstream horror/monster movie with the appeal of being “different” in the way it was shot with the personal digicam POV. Yes, that was done in The Blair Witch Project but I don’t want to make any comparisons to that movie (which have started popping up all over due to AICN’s mention of it reference to this film) until I actually see watch this one tonight.

We’ll see if this lives up to all the excitement. icon smile Cloverfield Advanced Screening

  2. LOL, thanks, Alex! I hope we agree about it when it’s over. And I *really* hope the Star Trek trailer will be attached to it. :-)

  3. Vic can you comment on the Trek trailer?
Also I hope you post your review at friday Midnight..
I’ll be up and it would be great to have the review allready.
I’m bettin thumbs way up on this…:)

  4. I don’t even want to see the verdict. I’m covering my eyes!!!

  5. Should be anytime now ??? Wait for it.. . .

  6. Ok folks… sorry it took so long but I’ve written the review and posted it up early. I’ve updated this post with the link to the review at the very top in the “Update” note. :-)

  7. Oh, and no, the Star Trek trailer was not attached to it tonight.

  8. I don’t know about SoP. That was incredibly over-promoted, to the point where you couldn’t escape it. My friends, their parents, and their reasonably intelligent pets had all heard of Snakes on a Plane. With Cloverfield, it’s been low-key enough that it won’t have such an incredible amount of hype to live up to.

  9. Liz….
Snakes on a plane, most of us knew it would suck. How much can you do? I mean your on a plane that can’t just pullover and there’s snakes all over the plane.
“Frankly I have better things to do like sit in traffic or clean my apt”.
Snakes on a plane was a good barometer to see how many S Jackson fans would see anything he’s in..
Cloverfield had the BEST gimmik for a movie trailer that I think I have ever seen. The going away party for Rob.
    Saw it during
Transformers and it was more impressive than transformers.
Forget online, this film has alot of people in the Sci-fi, Horror and Godzilla fanbase on the edge of their seats!
    I’m predicting a
57 million dollar weekend for Cloverfield easy possibly 60.
    See ya after the weekend…..!

  10. How did you swing a screening in Salt Lake? I must be out of the SLC loop.

  11. I have a contact at Paramount and I pleaded with her to get me in. :-)
