‘Cloverfield 2′ Still Likely To Happen

2 years ago by Sandy Schaefer

Cloverfield 2 Cloverfield 2 Still Likely To Happen

Both director Matt Reeves and production powerhouse J.J. Abrams are reportedly still committed to creating a followup to Cloverfield, their unusual 2008 hit monster movie.

Cloverfield 2 will likely involve the same monster as the first film – though I’m still personally kind of disappointed it did not turn out to be Bowser.  ;-) Can Reeves and Abrams get moviegoers stirred up for a sequel, now that the mystery has been revealed?

That is one question that will not be resolved for awhile, according to Reeves.  The filmmaker spoke recently to MTV and revealed that both he and Abrams are very much interested in creating another installment in the Cloverfield saga.  But will that happen sooner than later?

“It really isn’t the moment for [the sequel[ to go any further than it has, but it continues to be a priority for both of us,” Reeves admitted in the interview.  The second-time director went on to mention that Abrams is currently deep into pre-production on Super 8, while he himself is putting the finishing touches on his vampire horror remake, Let Me In.

Reeves offered nothing in the way of information about what the plot of Cloverfield 2 might entail, though he reiterated Abram’s previous claim that Super 8 is a completely unrelated project.  So don’t expect this cute lil’ guy (see below) to come bouncing out of the train car seen in the teaser trailer for that upcoming flick.

Cloverfield Monster Cloverfield 2 Still Likely To Happen

Cloverfield was a profitable undertaking and took in $170 million worldwide on a $25 million budget.  Abrams was very much involved in an elaborate marketing campaign that left a lot of moviegoers intrigued as to what the movie would actually be about.

The pic ultimately turned out to be a pretty standard monster flick about a Godzilla-like creature that wrecks havoc on a major city.  It was the pseudo-documentary structure and intentionally amateurish, “realistic” camerawork of the film that made it a truly memorable experience for those who saw it in theaters.

Will moviegoers flock to see a Cloverfield sequel as well?  The original movie is generally well-liked and Abrams seems to still have a knack for generating buzz around any project he is involved with. We will just have to wait and see if lightning can strike twice.

We’ll keep you posted on the development of Cloverfield 2 as more news comes our way.

I can’t wait for the sequel. I loved the first, and thought it gave an interesting spin on the Kaiju genre by telling the story from the perspective of the fleeing civilians. I just hope they ditch the shakey cam. It didn’t bother me, but I don’t think it would work a second time.

the shakey cam is what made cloverfield work,if they dont continue it then whats the point anyway?you will just have some regular dumb ole monster movie with nothin special.i say leave in the shakey cam and see how far they can push it

The Shakey Cam was horrific. I went with a bunch of friends and half of us had to cover our eyes because we were about to puke. Even the camera work when characters were standing still was all over the place. Shake the camera once in while for realism, but the whole movie? Count me out.

And my vote would be to keep the shakey cam. I am a huge Cloverfield fan but I agree 100% with Spider94.

i personally love the shakey cam but i think for the second one they could do it with some kind of documentary camera so its a bit less shakey but still real

such as is it a documentary about the cloverfield event i know they already have a plot but i think it would be much better then the home camera again

and just as an example of semi shakey cam look at quarantine basis of professional cam yet still real-ish

            just a thought

I agree! The shaky cam is what made that movie! Otherwise it would have just been another boring Godzilla movie… I was scared out of my mind watching that movie because you felt like you were actually in the movie with the group of kids!

I don’t know if Abrams realizes the potential of this movie but I think that if he took a page from the movie Vantage Point and applied it to not just one but a few sequels to this movie, with different twists and turns, I think this would be Abrams most lucrative and imaginative project of his career!

One perspective could be from the military. They all have helmet cams, truck cams, and other security cams that could all be used during the movie.

          Jordon,
if this movie scared you, you are much too young to watch it.
As far as the shaky camera goes, it added nothing but nausea.
Then again, some folks with amalgam fillings like to chew tinfoil…

I agree with a District 9 – ish kind of feel to a sequel. It has to retain the amateurish “as it happens” vibe without going too far into shakey cam territory. Too far in the other direction, however, would also ruin the whole idea. Example? Blair Witch 2… horrible. All big budget bombast, none of what made the first one work. Abrams has proven himself a monster filmmaker anyway (Star Trek…wow…) so when they do get around to it, good chance it’s going to be fantastic.

Where can they go from here?

Does it really need a sequel?

When i saw the first film in theaters, it didnt make me sick, but i had to wait for the dvd and slow play to see the good parts as they happen. I saw it twice and still couldn’t catch up with what was shown with all that shakey camera movement and felt like id need to see the film 5 times probly to make everything out which i wasnt gonna do. I hope they go with the No Shakey Camera for the sequel. If they do, not use too much of it.

I think that if they do a sequel, it might be clever to take a tip from District 9 and treat as a documentary or perhaps news footage. That will still retain the “authenticity” of the civilian perspective on the ground in the mess, but it will allow the filmmakers a little more control so the camera doesn’t make a mess of the film.

Hopefully the 2nd would be a bit more consitent, instead of the monster going from 60 feet tall to 120 feet tall depending on the scene — and going from shaking the ground with every step to sneaking up on them in a wide open park. More than one monster maybe???

Perhaps a new take could actually have a 2nd creature show up that is chasing/hunting the 1st… I like Choas’ suggestion of the news cast POV.

I enjoyed Cloverfield (and bought it) but found the shaky cam annoying during the calmer scenes. I understand the “Bad” camerawork when everything is hitting the fan but when they weren’t being chased by something, they should have calmed it down. The human brain will go to great lenghts to level vision. Even a drunkn chimpanzee would have eventually leveled out the camera.

I thought cloverfield was a great movie.I think they should make a second flim.I watched the special features and how they made the monster and the monster was a baby and it was crying formake his/her mother. So if they do make a second movie it should about the mother or father of the monster coming and trying to find it’s baby.

JJ is the Master!!!! This is brilliant news….and if you add the viral and look at the timelines with Targento Corp….the downed satelitte, the first attack….yes there was an attack early before Clover appeared in NY., the spy game, the SLUSHO connections ( on the screen and in the viral)…well the list goes on and on. There is a 100 ways for this to turn out and write about. WOW! Plus if you viewed the bonus features with Star Trek, you see that it is JJ himself doing all the camera bumping, he has made it into an art form in itself. Of course he could go the “Gorgo” route as has been speculated. Clover’s Mum could be on the way and she is pissed!!!! OK, I admit, I went 7 times and have viewed the DVD maybe 20 times. This is the best news ever!!!

I am visually impaired and the shakey camera didn’t bother me at all. It made it real. And I am hoping for a sequel. Though I hope it takes off from where the first left off not just another person’s Point of view of the initial attack on New York.

Cloverfield Fan is right. The second movie is about the mother coming from the sea looking for it’s child. The child is the monster in the first movie. They were woken up under the sea by the crashing sattelite. There was an Internet fake news cast showing something attacking an oil rig at sea, destroying it and some people escaping in a Zodiak. That was when they woke up and started attacking stuff.

I read a little while back that while they are putting the camera in someone else’s hand, it’s going to recap the first movie from their point of view. But these other guys are right too. Perhaps the second film will be in the point of view of someone who’s known the secret from the beginning, then witnesses the destruction of new york only to see a pissed off gaurdian, longing for it’s dead kin, sifting through the ashes. It would be pretty cool to see classified footage, right?

I loved Cloverfield. I hope they do follow it up with something great and I hope there’s a massive viral campaign where we can sift through all the info and come to debatable conclusions. Fun stuff!

I hope there isn’t a shakey cam in the sequel (prequel?) to this film. One of my kids and wife wouldn’t sit down and watch it with the rest of us. it creates motion sickness in some people. I personally like it because it gives it a more realistic feel and I loved the long long takes. And on a different note, it’s clear as bells that the one frame of Super 8 is the same creature. the spoiler genie was freed from that bottle. just roll with it. stop pretending it’s not. It may backfire.

I agree with everyone else. The movie was good but the “shakey camera” almost trashed it. It made the movie wearisome and enough is enough. In an effort to create a sense of “realism” to the film Abrams undermined the effectiveness. Better to use a steadicam like George Lucas did in Star Wars. We get the sensation of movement without the roller coaster puke effect.

I LOVED this movie. It makes me mad that other people said they hated it and give ridiculous reasons as to why they hated it. “I hate the shakey camera” “It’s unrealistic” A. you knew it was going to be a shakey movie. B. I felt like I was in the movie. From beginning to end. The way they made profiles on myspace for the characters, put little hints throughout the movie…it was well thought out. <3 it. one of my favorite monster movies.

I admit at first I hated the movie, but then I rented it when it came out on DVD and I actually love the movie now!!! They need to make a sequel, there was still one surviving character that got away in a helicopter! and the two at the end could possibly still be alive, it doesn’t show them die! and the brother could have just gotten knocked into the water under the bridge, we only have two proven deaths in this movie! so there is great potential for a sequel, I think they should seriously do an angry alien parent thing in the sequel l0l!!

The satellite was clearly the alien, not just a satellite crashing in. The alien was ‘sent’ by someone (unless it just reproduces and sends out ‘spores’ into space which land on planets.

You can tell this, because at the end of Cloverfield, you can see the satellite coming in fast, but actually slowing down before it hits the sea, so it was clearly a planned re-entry, slowing down at the end to avoid impact damage. Also, the satellite has no parachutes or even rocket jets coming out underneath it, so it is unlikely to be human technology.
