‘Cloud Atlas’ & ‘Gangster Squad’ Set Photos Take You Back In Time

Shooting has commenced on two star-studded productions: the Wachowski siblings’ adaptation of David Mitchell’s Man Booker Prize finalist, Cloud Atlas – which Tom Tykwer is co-directing – and Gangster Squad, a true-story crime drama that features Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) at the helm.

Cloud Atlas is composed of six separate storylines that are separated by geography and time; early set photos, however, feature cast members dressed in early ’70s fashion. The Gangster Squad set pics, by comparison, show off leading men Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin in their ’40s-era attire.

Both of these films are expected to reach theaters by the end of 2012, in order to qualify for the 2013 Academy Awards ceremony. There’s no guarantee either title will ultimately be a critical and/or box office smash, but early signs are that they will at least be worth checking out in theaters.

Cloud Atlas movie begins filming Cloud Atlas & Gangster Squad Set Photos Take You Back In Time

One of the aforementioned six narrative threads in Cloud Atlas revolves around a “high-minded” journalist who investigates questionable activities at a California nuclear power plant, during the early 1970s (ie. when Ronald Reagan was the governor).

We’ve been told that the members of the Cloud Atlas cast – which includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, and Jim Broadbent, among others – are said to all be playing multiple roles in the film’s different storylines. So, presumably, they will all eventually get to dress up in a variety of different period garb and costumes.

These early set photos reveal Berry’s ’70s look – complete with a poofy hairdo, a Doctor Who-style scarf, and what appear to be bellbottoms – and, it seems, Hugo Weaving’s wardrobe for that segment of the film (it’s relatively simple, by comparison).

Gangster Squad

Fleischer is filming Gangster Squad on the streets of Los Angeles – including several of the actual locations where the real titular “off-the-record” police force worked. That the film’s script was penned by onetime LAPD officer Will Beall (Castle) should (hopefully) only further instill the thriller with a sense of gritty authenticity.

No period drama is complete without complimentary attire and Gangster Squad will see its cast members – which includes big names like Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, and Emma Stone, among others – decked out in stylish ’40s-era costumes throughout.

For an early look at Brolin in his office suit and Gosling – whose ensemble includes a nice-fitting vest and slick zoot hat – in Gangster Squad, check out the set photos (again, via Just Jared) below:

  1. just a rapid grammatical nitpick: “garb” is never pluralized. “Period garb”, whether you are referring to a single piece of clothing, or many pieces.

    • Sorry about that – it’s been fixed.

  2. And I think it’s the ‘Man Booker’ prize.

    • es, confirmed that it is “man” and not “max”.

    • Just a slipup, sorry.

      That’s been corrected as well.
