the-men-who-stare-at-goats-has-an-all-star-castYou have to hand it to George Clooney, not only is the man a high powered chick magnet, but he also surrounds himself with first class talent when he’s making films.

The former Batman and Oscar winner’s latest film The Men Who Stare At Goats has Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges currently in negotiations to star opposite him in the film which will surely under-go a title change.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the film is:

“Based on the book by the Guardian columnist Jon Ronson, ‘Goats’ is set in Iraq and centers on Bob Wilton (McGregor), a desperate reporter who stumbles upon the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady (Clooney), who claims to be a former secret U.S. military psychic soldier who was reactivated post-Sept. 11.”

“Goats” chronicles the two men’s travels through Iraq and offers glimpses into the supposedly real secret Army unit tasked with creating soldiers with paranormal powers. “

I don’t know about you but I think that this sounds like a pretty exciting project. I feel that Clooney is a film-maker with real depth and The Men Who Stare At Goats could be a film that earns money and pulls in awards! Clooney has been making interesting career choices for the last ten years or so, and it’s good to see an A-List star seek out good material rather than a huge paycheck.

With a cast like this The Men Who Stare At Goats should make every-one’s must see list.

The Grant Heslov directed film goes before the camera lens next month.

  1. Why would the military train super soliders in a war zone ??????????????
    (Did I read that wrong)

Apparently he’s a guy magnet as well,,, ghessh Niall. :-)

How long before we see Clooney doing beer comercials as “the Worlds Most Interesting man”.
(I don’t allways drink beer, but when I do, its Coors lite). Lol.

    At least this film isn’t a reboot…

  2. 790,
I just can’t say bad things about a man who isn’t as good looking as me!

    Niall

  3. Oh yay, George “celebrities are better than normal people” Clooney in a war set in Iraq…

    skip…

  4. Will Clooney hire some Goats To Stare at his political preachapaloozer films? His message movies sure don’t motivate flocks of humans to the box office.

  5. Well put jc.

Oh, and my post should have read: “…in a war film set in Iraq” left out a word, lol

  6. Count me in.

What the detractors here don’t seem to get is that, unlike many other political films. Clooney’s make back their budgets. Plus, they’re actually good.

790: Actually, the supersoldier training began back in the late 70s and 80s, but had no real purpose until Iraq. Judging from the cast members’ ages, most of those sent in were seasoned professionals. The trainees, from what I remember of the book, stayed at the US facility.

  7. elessar,

Clooney is a chick magnet, and I suppose he’s a decent actor. His movies ought to do MUCH more than break even. He has to TRY to make movies that are so noxious to consumers that word gets out and everyone avoids them.

I’ve seen movies by off-the-screen activists like Robin Williams, Sean Penn, and Lionardo DiCaprio–because their movies are not propaganda pieces.

On the other hand, I’ll admit that Clooney is so extreme that I even avoid the occasional “neutral” film he makes to pay some bills.

  8. Well elessar, I guess he has you fooled then. Remember what he said in his speech, he thinks celebrities are smarter than us lowly “normal” people in the social and political arena. So if you don’t mind giving your money to some pompous rich celebrity that feels he can openly insult the people who signs his paychecks while he’s stuffing his own political views down your throat. Hey, that’s your own choice. I tend to like the actors I watch to make movies that entertain me, not try to “educate” me in things that they feel they know more about even if technically speaking most of them have less education than I did…

  9. When some celebs really get “out there” in their off-camera politicizing it be very difficult for me to watch them in films – mainly because for the most part they are all on the opposite side of the aisle from where I stand.

I simply cannot bear to watch Sean Penn in a movie and I think Danny Glover is now on my “do not watch” list. Unfortunately Matt Damon just ventured into that area for me recently, but at least he’s basically done with the Bourne movies. :-P

Don’t agree with me? Sue me. That’s how I feel.

    Vic

  10. Danny Glover has always been there, but was not openly vocal about it then. If you watch the old Lethal Weapon films, you always see some anti-gun poster hung up in the police stations. That was his doing. And it’s funny since the movie is called “Lethal Weapon” and he uses firearms all throughout the films… lol
