Shoot ‘Em Up star and one time James Bond candidate Clive Owen is finally getting a chance to play a Bond-like semi-real action star – uncovering a conspiracy and trying to save the world in The International.

Owen plays an Interpol agent who with the help of a Manhattan Assistant D.A. discovers one of the world’s largest banks is participating in money laundering, arms trading and other illegal activities. He tries to bring them down while fighting through an international chase – with both of their lives on the line.

Here’s the first trailer released for the film:

Along with Owen, the film features a cast including Naomi Watts and Armin Mueller-Stahl (who was spectacular in his big role as the mob boss in Eastern Promises), and is due out a day before Valentine’s Day next February.

The International is directed by German filmmaker Tom Tykwer, who is most well-known for his Run Lola Run flick a decade ago. It was very well received by critics and was hugely successful (internationally screened in over 40 countries). Not bad for a small film made on just on a 3 million mark budget (just over USD $2 million). While he doesn’t have many projects under his belt, he does have a knack for using good actors in the few American films he has made. Names like Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and now Clive Owen… who are all Oscar material.

Tykwer has proven he can make a solid action flick and put his own personal stamp on it. Based on the trailer and considering the cast, I have high expectations for this movie and will definitely see it. I just hope that general audiences do as well. Clive Owen’s presence in the film should help bring in the crowds.

What do you guys think? Just another action-drama or something worth seeing on the big screen?

  1. You know, I was almost convinced it didn’t borrow too much from James Bond– and then that music started.

Still, though, I’m a fan of Clive Owen’s acting. I might see this one in theaters if it doesn’t look too bad as more information is released.

  2. hmm…I just read an article about this trailer. It seems it uses a very short clip taken directly out of the ghostrider movie.

  3. I don’t know, maybe the old Bond movies, because Owen doesn’t look like he’s at home holding that firearm. I know he did shoot em up, but we all know he got little to no actual firearm training for that movie… All movie shooting and no real shooting. Not saying the movie isn’t James Bond-ish, but his character sure doesn’t look it.

  4. Yeah Ken, definitely has the feel of a James Bond movie/plot rather than Clive giving off a Sean Connery/Craig Daniels aura.

    Good call.

  7. Oh wow, congrats go to Rob.. :D

  8. Based on the trailer, this movie is definetly worth seeing. Looking forward to opening night in Feb 09.

  9. Thanks old man!

    :)

  10. Your welcome Rob, and I think your right it’s big screen worthy. If Daniel Craig gets sick of Bond any time soon the franchise has options. Is this a Owen dry run?? :)

  11. if you take a look at The Legacy of James Bond [before Daniel Craig] Clive Owen fits perfectly for the Role of Bond….James Bond mostly because he is British like all Versions of James Bond expect for Daniel Craig version and if you watch his films like The International and Shoot ‘Em Up you can see why he can pull off James Bond, for The other cast Choices are Judy Dench as M: The head of MI6 and Bond’s superior,Hugh Laurie as Q: The head of Q-Branch who supplies Bond with a specially modified briefcase and a .25 caliber Armilite sniper rifle,Samantha Bond as Miss Moneypenny: M’s secretary and assistant, who has a flirtatious relationship with Bond, Cate Blanchett as as Rosa Klebb: A former SMERSH Colonel, now SPECTRE’s Chief Planning Officer and Natalie Portman as Tatiana Romanova and Christoph Waltz as “Number 1″: The mysterious head of SPECTRE.and Robert Knepper as Donald “Red” Grant: A cunning and deadly SPECTRE assasin this is a cast idea for From Russia with Love based on the Ian Fleming novel if made of course it would blow minds with this cast as these characters and For the director, I decided on either Lee Tamahori the director of Die Another Day or Marc Forster the director of Quantum of Solace. and that is both The cast and The Director in case of The Film. feel free to browse and etc.
