cleveland 570x320 Has The Cleveland Show Been Canceled?

Seth MacFarlane may have his critics, but if there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s that the man behind Family Guy and box office smash Ted certainly knows how to keep busy.

In the past two years, MacFarlane has directed his first feature, released an album of jazz standards and hosted the Academy Awards (to some controversy, of course), all while providing his voice talent and creative direction to three animated Fox comedies. Now, however, it seems that one of those shows may be on its way out.

According to The Wrap, The Cleveland Show will likely be canceled, as Fox has yet to order new episodes of the Family Guy spin-off. The series remains the only MacFarlane-produced show that has not been renewed for next season (the other two being Family Guy and American Dad).

It should be noted that Fox has been known in the past to pull animated series (including King of the Hill and Family Guy) from its schedule, only to have them return to the air later in the season. However, the Animation Guild – representing the show’s artists – has already announced via its blog that The Cleveland Show will end with season 4 this May, making its cancellation seemingly inevitable at this point.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that fans have seen the last of Cleveland Brown (and his “happy mustache face“). Should Fox officially cancel the series, it’s quite likely that he could return to Family Guy and bring along other Cleveland Show characters. Mike Henry (who provides the voice of Cleveland) has remained a consistent performer on Family Guy throughout its run, bringing to life a number of recurring characters, including creepy old Herbert and Consuela the maid.

In fact, Cleveland’s potential return could provide a bit of a boost to Family Guy. Cleveland, Peter, Joe and Quagmire frequently shared storylines in earlier seasons, and the dynamic at their favorite bar, The Drunken Clam, hasn’t quite been the same since the spin-off began. Besides, Family Guy – much like its progenitor, The Simpsons – prides itself on offering viewers numerous wacky recurring characters. Why not add the cast of The Cleveland Show into the fold?

As far as MacFarlane’s career, the end of The Cleveland Show might actually prove to be a good thing, as he already has numerous TV and film projects in various stages of development. In addition to his current Fox series, MacFarlane is developing a live-action comedy series for the network with Ted writers Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, a Ted sequel and western comedy A Million Ways to Die (starring Liam Neeson, Giovanni Ribisi and possibly Oscar winner Charlize Theron).

Are you disappointed to see The Cleveland Show fade into television history, or would you prefer MacFarlane devote his focus to other projects? Let us know in the comments section below.

The Cleveland Show airs (for now, at least) on Sundays @7:30pm on Fox.

  1. I hate this news! The Cleveland Show was a favorite of mine and I’ve owned several seasons over the past few years. Will hate to see the show go, but if it must I’d like to see some of the characters go over to Family Guy. Still, sad, sad news for me.

  2. Please bring back the Cleveland show it was one of the best shows you’ve ever made EVER!!!! I MEAN AMERICAN DAD IS COOL BUT NOT LIKE THE Cleveland show and family guy is funny but Cleveland show is crazy

  3. It fine remember American dad family guy futurama have all been cancelled and brought back if they do put him in family guy they should do it like stoolbend was destroyed or keep it cancelled and later bring it back because they my lose a lot of viewers because of this

  4. not that it’s the most reliable source, but wikipedia shows an upcoming episode of ‘family guy’ entitled “he’s bla-ack!”
could this be the return of cleveland to quahog???
    methinks yes..

    • It sounds promising. I miss the show and hope the gang come back on the Family Guy Also.

  5. I really liked the Cleveland show, please put new episodes on adult swim or something…I like family guy and American dad, but as an African American my sons and I really bonded over this show….please consider.thanks

  6. All the attacks on the Simpsons….I will always enjoy watching Homer on fox, that being said. American Dad is the funniest show, Roger has to be the best toon Seth created, maybe better than Peter and Stewie. I still enjoy Family Guy, because of their classic characters, like Mayor West. The Cleveland show was funny to me with Jamie Kennedy….never liked Cleveland Jr. I thought the hillbillies were funny, and the principal. The other toons were just annoying. I liked Rallo, but never found him funny.

BYE bye bye cleveland. … but, leave the Simpsons and American Dad alone.

    • honestly, i think simpsons has gotten as boring as family guy has, i still watch both but neither are at the level they used to be at all, american dad has good stories still, cleveland was hit and miss, but still worth keeping around

    • i agree, Roger is the best, and those cleveland charaters were pretty bad for the most part

  7. This is horrible news. This is one of the funniest shows out there. Please don’t cancel

  8. Good riddance. Nothing McFarlaine has done past Family Guy season 3 has been funny.

  9. Nooooo!! Please bring Cleveland Show back

  10. The Cleaveland show was god-awful. I am glad to see it is gone. Hope it gets replaced with something that doesn’t make me immediately change the channel.

  11. Ok, American dad is excellent, i feel we all agree. Family guy is still great to me, the one liner type jokes will never get old, just as a drink of ice water always tastes great on hot day. I love the Simpsons but i hate it. Its old and not funny. Simple as that. Bobs burgers is good, didn’t like it at first but there are really good comedians in it, so it grew on me. As for the Cleveland show,i tried, i really did, its just not funny to me. I never got it. Basically the worst character on family guy got his own show, so to make him look good they made a bunch of characters less funny than him. Happy its gone, took up a slot that a better show could have used. And Dad’s? I really don’t like it either. So in the end it should go the way of the Cleveland show. Hopefully it doesn’t last as long as that did though. 8 o’clock should be family guy, them 830 American dad, then Bob’s Burgers, and then another Seth show that doesn’t suck,.

  12. Please, please bring back cleveland. I looked forward to the show every Sunday night. I even watch the past seasons on netflix. The show is funny and well written. You can’t say that about a lotof cartoons these days. Please make my day and bring back cleveland brown.

  13. Please, please bring back cleveland. I looked forward to the show every Sunday night. I even watch the past seasons on netflix. The show is funny and well written. You can’t say that about a lotof cartoons these days. Please make my day and bring back cleveland brown.d

  14. I can’t believe the cleveland show is gone the one show that integrated minorities is now gone. Not happy about it at all and it was funny. No character can replace Rallo. I miss it already …..

  15. I really enjoyed the Cleveland show. Honestly it is one of the only shows my husband and I can watch together. I think it needs a bit of tweaking to really get it up to the standards of Macfarlanes humor, but really, this show isn’t as blatantly crass as Family Guy, and it’s well more family and real world oriented. We can all agree on that i’m sure. Just keep the show please.

  16. I rather them just get ride of the Cleveland show it would make room for great shows like American dad on the Fox Sunday line up owo please get ride of the Cleveland show out with the old and bitter show and in with the younger stronger new family guy show with them in it

    • Dude, I love you. Great to hear from someone on the same page as me. Yes, they should throw out Cleveland Show and hold onto the awesome American Dad. While I don’t care for Family Guy no more, Quahog is where Cleveland Brown and his family belong now.

  17. How can the FOX programmers be such idiots and still keep their jobs. The Cleveland Show is awesome and should be renewed. The simple fact is that FOX is run by morons and they couldn’t recognize a good show.

  18. The Cleveland show had some amazing characters! It just can not be cancelled! I think we can all agree that Rollo was one of the coolest kids in any cartoon ever. He had great episodes; especially with Cleveland Jr. PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THE CLEVELAND SHOW!

  19. Please bring the show back the Cleveland show!!I can’t stand to see my 2nd favorite show dissapate!LETS GO CLEVELAND SHOW!!

  20. I like the Cleveland Show and I like Cleveland. better then Peter Griffith. Peter is disgusting and mean. Cleveland behaves and acts better then Peter. I like the other characters in Family Guy except Peter, he is not funny.

  21. I hate to see Cleveland show go, but it was my least favorite of the three. IMHO, American Dad is the best written and funniest of them all. Roger is hysterical!

  22. I like Family Guy. I love American Dad but The Cleveland Show was honestly the closest to capturing all aspects of comedy with the right amount of devotion to each joke to keep one entertained, tell a story, and build on your morels at the end. To be clear it was funny as hell like American Dad and Family Guy. It switched gears and took me in so many new directions at the same time making me feel as if I took something away from it when the episode finished. I think Fox is making a huge mistake on canceling such a work of art and it will sorely be missed

  23. If the Cleveland show goes I go…..family guy stopped being funny almost ten years ago

  25. TBS, please do us a solid and pick this up!

  26. Actually seeing the family of Cleveland Show mixed with Peter family in Family Guy would be tremendous and I can picture Rallo and Stewie doing some fun things together.

  27. I cannot believe they would cancel the Cleveland show it’s one of my favorite shows. I actually prefer Cleveland show over family guy. I mean family guy is a great show but Cleveland show I believe is way funnier. I am rather disappointed that they would do this hopefully he will air new episodes on adult swim like he did when they canceled family guy and it might make a comeback

  28. I can’t believe they canceled this show. It is an awesome show. Please bring the Cleveland show back!!!! We are loyal fans…

  29. At first I Wasn’t crazy about the Clevland Show but I have come to think it’s humour is more dark and brilliantly weird then Family Guy and American Dad has been for quite a while now. When it comes on, I get happy like I used to when older episodes FG and AD did. The show will be missed and l hope others feel the same way and get it picked back up.
